I'm writing a simple bash script and I would like it to be able to to execute top (that's the easy part) and then to supply the parameters to top
programatically.

Here is the explanation:
Top is an interactive program that requires user input to do stuff, sort etc. I would like to programatically do so, for example:

top;
supply input;
get info;
quit;

Is it possible with simple bash?

Ubuntu :: Alt Key / Tool Run To Examine The Key Strokes As They Are Typed?

Jan 13, 2010

Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on Dell XPS 8000

This one is really busting my balloons. I have been running my new machine for a couple of weeks now. I have either beaten most issues into submission or come up with work arounds or just learned to live with them. Except for this one...

About once a day, I cannot duplicate the circumstances, my Alt key ceases to function in Ubuntu. My left hand has over the years evolved into a specialized tool which presses Alt-Tab and Alt-F4 instinctively. When these do not work it is driving me nuts.

I have determined that this is not a hardware issue. I generally have a VMWare virtual machine running and Alt-Tab and other Alt key combinations work in the VM at the same time as they are not working on the host.

I must at a minimum logout and back in get the Alt key to be recognized again in the host.

Is there a tool which I can run to examine the key strokes as they are typed? something like the keyboard tester which runs during installation?

General :: Cant Read Filesystem Type On Windows Partition?

May 27, 2011

I had installed ubuntu 11.04 on my system along with windows vista. After a few days, i decided to remove ubuntu so i just logged into windows and formatted the ubuntu partition using the windows partitioner, then extended my main c: drive to span the whole disk so that i was left with a single partition with only windows vista on it.Later when trying to restart my system couldn't log back into windows.I kept getting a prompt sayinggrub rescue>After googling around a bit i shrinked and created another partition the disk again and installed ubuntu on it again.still. =/GRUB doesn't show any windows entry.I noticed something strange though that when i tried viewing my partitions using parted i didnt see any filesystem type listed besides my windows partition (/dev/sda3). I doubt that is why GRUB does not show any windows entry.Also i manually tried to boot into windows from the grub prompt using commands...root(hd0,3)chainloader +1bootbut it says 'invalid signature'Did i somehow corrupted my windows partition during resizing and installing/un-installing? Plus i also booted with the windows installation dvd and when i typed bootmgr /fixbootit said something like no valid filesystem found.

General :: Windows - Connecting Yamaha KX8 Keyboard To Computer?

Jun 28, 2010

Update: I found the name of my software that came with keyboard: Cubase Ai4

How can I connect usb-piano to my computer?

I recently bought a yamaha KX8 keyboard. It does not, however, have any built in speakers, but must be connected to something in order to play.

It come with a USB cord and some weird windows software, that must be running in order for the keyboard to make any sound. Now that software seems VERY complicated. I merely want to play the "piano" instrument.

I was wandering if there is some kind of SIMPLER software (maybe open source) that will allow me to connect this keyboard to either windows or linux os?

General :: Keyboard Shortcuts To Manage Windows/workspace On KDE And RDP Connection

Jul 29, 2010

On PC-BSD 8.1 (KDE) I have four workspaces. I want to launch rdesktop 1.6 in one of them, full screen if possible (I'll settle for nearly-full in a window if I have to), and be able to do the following:

Switch between windows in the remote session using Alt+Tab. Switch between local workspaces using either the default Ctrl+F1 or what I've switched it to, my preferred Alt+F1.

It seems if I use the -K option, I get 2 but not 1. If I don't, I get 1 but not 2. Is there no way to do this? How can I tell rdesktop to send or not send a specific key combination?

General :: Gnome - US International Keyboard Layout That Mimics Windows' Behavior?

Jun 19, 2010

I am used to using US International as my keyboard layout. However, the implementation appears to differ greatly between Windows and Linux (Gnome, in my case - may well be a GTK issue since GTK behaves the same on Windows).The layout uses dead keys, for example for keys such as ', ", ^, &c. allowing easy entry of characters with diacritics. On Windows pressing a dead key and then a key that has no pair associated results in the dead key's character (when paired with space) and the character from the second key. Example: Pressing ", a yields "ä", however, pressings yields "'s", as there is no pairing for ' and s.

Now, there is a language called English which makes frequent use of exactly those two characters and since it works on Windows to just type them as usual it's muscle memory for me now. Which brings me to my problem:On Linux (and GTK on Windows), there is a pairing for ' and s (among many others), resulting in Å› (which, in turn, leads to me frequently typing "itÅ›"). So typing "it's" requires me to type ',  , s at the end.There are a few other combinations I'm used to that don't work. Among those is that for non-existant pairs simply nothing is the result. Typing "I'd" results in "I". Hitting one of those keys twice results in a non-spacing diacritic which breaks my habit of typing strings by first typing both quotation marks (which now result in a non-spacing acute accent or macron).

Long story short: None of the supplied US International layouts appears to function the same as in Windows - are there any that do work identically? Or any chance to configure it that way? While it may be nice to type an s with acute accent or non-spacing diacritics, those aren't exactly common needs for me.

General :: Compiz Stops Updating Windows On A Multi-head System - Keyboard And Mouse Still Alive?

Dec 8, 2010

I am running Fedora F14 on an Intel I3 cpu w/4Gb memory and plenty of disk. I have two displays connected to the Gigabyte Motherboard, one of the HDMI connector, and one on a DVI connector. I run Gnome. When Compiz is enabled things work fine for a while, meaning hours or days. Then the displays will "freeze" to the point where the clock stops updating. The system itself is still running programs, services, and the mouse and keyboard work. The mouse cursor will move around, but nothing can be clicked upon. If a terminal was the open window, typing on the keyboard does not do anything, nor does ctrl-backspace or whatever it is to terminate X windows. The keyboard does allow me to press ctrl-alt-F2 to switch to one of the base consoles. Once there I can type to my hearts content. I can kill off my logged in Gnome session through the console, and I can shutdown the system in a controlled manner.

It is as if all of the windows stop updating. For example, I play music through Amarok. An hour after I stop using the system but letting the music play the screens will do their lockup. The clock will stop, and Amarok will stop updating which song it is playing. It continues to play each song in the playlist, but the Amarok window shows what was playing at the time that the clock stopped. I've also had this happen to me while using Yumex, where it would stop updating the screen while installing programs, but the programs do get installed. With Compiz off I don't have this problem.

The version of Compiz I am using is currently 0.8.6-3. It is running on Gnome 2.32.0-2, with a Linux kernel of 2.6.35.9-64. It has happened with earlier versions of these programs. I am using the graphics processing the Intel i3 chip to the motherboard connectors. The freeze generally happens at some random time while I am not actively using the system. It has happened to me while doing simple things like programming through an IDE. The really strange thing to me is that the cursor will move around on the screen after everything else stops updating.

Hardware :: Digital Tablet - Show The Pen Strokes Both On The Tablet's Display And On The Computer's Monitor At The Same Time

Mar 13, 2010

I have noticed they sell digital writing tablets that have the ability to show the pen strokes both on the tablet's display and on the computer's monitor at the same time, and I think they are called LCD digital tablets and they serve as both a second computer monitor AND a writing tablet combined in one, such as the Wacom Cintiq, and must be connected both by USB as well as with a VGA/DVI port, and you have the ability to open up a drawing application directly from the tablet such as Paint where you can draw or write on the tablet's display. And you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. Then you save the results to a JPEG file, for example.

But I do not want a digtal tablet quite as elaborate as that. I am looking for something similar to the credit card terminals used in stores where you can sign your name directly on the display after swiping your credit card, and you can see what you are writing as you write. Then your signature shows up on a paper receipt later. Do they make digital tablets like that for the home user, and if they do, would they have to hook up to the VGA/DVI port on your video card? What are they called and where can I get one?

I've searched several online stores but they do not say if you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. I already have a Wacom tablet in Linux but you can not see what you are writing on the tablet. I have to keep looking up at my computer's monitor to see what I am writing and proficiency is reduced as a result. And again, I do not want a tablet as elaborate as I described in my first paragraph. I want something simplier, such as the type used at a credit card terminal.

OpenSUSE :: Windows Partitions Are Read-only Under 11.3 X64

I use dual boot in the lap, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and openSUSE 11.3 x64, plus another NTFS partition dedicated for data. When I browse normally with Dolphin the 2 NTFS partitions I can see and browse them, but it doesn't allow me to write data (create new files or paste) or modify saved files. It's like a read-only partition. I have to run Dolphin browser as root in order to be able to normally write and modify data. Some other pals however tell me they're able to do it without running as root, although they use openSUSE x86.
