View 3 Replies View RelatedI opened a text file and read some stuff. Then I (think) I closed it. Then I tried to open another one and it stopped working. It seemed to compile fine though. Why would this be?

I plug a USB device, it gets a /dev entry, e.g. sdf, i mount its filesystem, then some program opens a file on this filesystem. I unplug this device, its /dev entry disappears, but if i replug this device again, it gets another name - sdg.
How can i force the program to close the file so the filesystem is ready to be unmounted without using "lazy unmount" to release the device name, BUT so that the program doesn't crash after trying to make I/O to this file, and, of course, without having to kill the program?
How do I create a program file for a new program?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI work for a food manufacturing company in Sheffield and we have a machine called a duck injector which operates off a Human Machine Interface Touch Screen. The program inside this has been written and runs using Linux. This is stored on a Compact Flash Card.
This screen has been damaged and isn't made anymore so we've been sent a new screen which is a 12'1" Intel Atom N270 HMI.
I simply tried to put the Flash Card in the port and powered it up (booting from a removable source) and i get the following:
I've had absolutely zero experience with Linux so i'm completely stuck as to what to do to get it to work.
I've got a flash card with XP on it so i can boot up in that but then it won't read the flash card with the program on because it's in Linux (presumably?)
I've also tried downloading Mubuntu 10.10 and booted it up using that on a flashdrive - this allows me to read the flash card with the program but i can't get it to boot up/run.
Anyone know of an Open Source ID/Badge Program? I'm looking into using it in a future business. I'm not worried about all the parts that go to it, just the program, for now.

Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 9.10 and had hoped to use Synaptic to find and install Truecrypt. As Synaptic couldn't find it I downloaded it from [URL]. In case it helps the file is called "truecrypt-6.3a-linux-x86.tar.gz". Apart from not knowing how to get a working program from the .tar.gz file, I don't know whether the installation process sorts out where the file should go and puts it there, or whether I have to create a directory for it and put it there myself.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere. So where is its executable to direct the program chooser to?

I need to put davmail in a better location than downloads but am unsure where to put it, Im guessing if I seperate some of the files/folders such as lib ill have to modify the davmail.sh file.
wheres the best location to keep this or should it remain in my home folder, I was going to put this in
/usr/local/bin
/usr/local/lib
But the jar count as a binary? the .sh certainly wouldnt.
