General :: Printing With Usb To Parallel Adapter With Hp 720c
Mar 25, 2010
I've got a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 on a fresh disk and everything was going perfectly. I bought a Usb=>parallel cable to connect my old parallel port printer. When I try and print, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the job will go to the print queue and then nothing happens, in this case if I unplug and replug the usb cable a couple of times it usually prints the document. Sometimes the job doesn't show up in the print queue at all and sometimes it prints the document with no problems.
Whenever I use lsusb, I never see the printer in the list of attached usb devices (even when the printer is printing!). Apart from root hubs, the only two devices ever listed with lsusb are my mouse and scanner.

I have a Panasonic 3123 dot matrix printer which I am trying to get working on my Dell Vostro 420 running 11.3 (x64). Since Dell decided to eliminate on board parallel ports from their systems I've added one with a Startech PCI1PECP PCI card (uses a NETMOS NM9805CV chipset). I've confirmed that the printer works using an old laptop running Windows 2k with a LPT port running in ECP mode. When attached to my desktop the printer will (usually) shift the pin carriage etc when I perform a cold boot but will not respond when sent a test page in yast or cups (it is detected after a fashion and I have assigned the appropriate ppd from the Omni package).
The following is the relevant out put from lspci, lsmod and dmesg:
Code:

I use pm-suspend (from pm-utils-0.99.3-10.el5.centos.386) to put my CentOS computer (kernel 2.6.18-164.el5PAE) to sleep (power consumption decreases from 66 to 4 W). Hitting the computer power button reactivates the computer. But the parallel port connected HP LaserJet 6L no longer prints. Michael Sweet suggested this sounds like a parallel port driver isn't compatible with pm-suspend. Is there anything faster than shutting the computer down and restarting it to enable its parallel port printer? (After pm-suspend, command "reboot" fails to restart CentOS.)

I have an old HP Laserjet 5L which is connected to the parallel port of my computer. I could hp-setup to configure the printer. It is connected to
hp:/par/HP_Laserjet_5L?device=/dev/parport0
Everytime a want to print the printer is stopped with the error message
/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed
(tried to print as root and as a normal user doesn't work)
If I try to print directly to the device works with
echo "test" > /dev/lp0
but it does not work with
echo "test" > /dev/parport0
the permissions are set to
crw-rw---- 1 root scanner 6, 0 28. Jan 14:54 /dev/lp0
crw-rw---- 1 root scanner 99, 0 28. Jan 14:54 /dev/parport0
My Distribution is archlinux with all updates installed.

I have a printer that is not getting a device node assigned at boot. The printer is attached with a USB to Parallel (IEEE-1284) adapter cable. When I plug in the usb cable when the machine is running, the printer is assigned the device node: /dev/usb/lp0
I am guessing that during startup, the printer device is not detected since it is plugged in over an adapter cable which may be considered a device in itself? This is for a retail store, and we rely on the printer to pop the cash drawer open, so it kinda has to work without a "secret handshake".Unfortunately our workstations do not have Parallel ports. I would be happy to share terminal output, udev info, I'll write you a poem but I could sure use a helping hand- I'm stumped!

I have a shell script to refresh some databases. Currently I open 5 sessions and to execute the five scripts.
Today, as test, I tried to see if I could run two refreshes simultaneously from one session using the '&':
. /refresh.ksh db1 &
. /refresh.ksh db2
The first one ran and the second one started only after the first one was finished. Could it be that the script refresh.ksh contains many commands and those are not pushed to the background? If so, what's the best approach to getting 5 db's refresh simultanously from on session?

While converting some images using ImageMagick, I noticed a somewhat strange effect. Using xargs was significantly slower than a standard for loop. Since xargs limited to a single process should act like a for loop, I tested that, and found it to be about the same.
Thus, we have this demonstration.
Quad core (AMD Athalon X4, 2.6GHz)
Working entirely on a tempfs (16g ram total; no swap)
No other major loads

I do not know much about parallel computing, but I do have access to a few cpus.I am trying to write a program compatible for multiple cpus, but to do it, I need to ensure unique directories. I have figured out that the time of creation, process id, and cpu id form a unique combination I can use to name files (up to the degree of accuracy of the internal timer).Anyway, I am using perl. I know how to find the process id and I know I can get the time pretty easily, but as I said, I do not know much about hardware or parallel computing. All I need is a way to identify each cpu in the system and I am set for half of my program (the other half is significantly more straightforward and is mainly about text parsing.)
So anyway using terminal, perl, etc., I could access this identification? Or could someone at least tell me the name of what I am looking for? I have seen the words "ip" "MAC" "hostid" and a bunch of other "id" things come up in my googling, but I really cannot figure out which is the one relevent to me

I have been trying out serial and parallel data communication on Fedora 13 Beta. I can easily see the list of serial ports through:
Code:
setserial -g /dev/ttyS[0-3]
And can also write some data through:
Code:
ll > /dev/ttyS0
But I am unable to see parallel ports
I can see something like:
Code:
/dev/parport0
But when I try out:
ll > /dev/parport0
It throws error.

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.
I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

I have unzipped a Konica Minolta file at: [URL] I currently have it stored in a CUPS folder, unfortunately it is in my home directory. I am running 9.10 Ubuntu on a Dell latitude D830. Whats the correct path to install the CUPS folder so I can actually get something to print? Oh, and i am trying to get on a printer at work that is networked. i have full admin privileges as an Ubuntu user, but I am missing something really big. See posts below.
Currently I have tried: sudo mv /home/angela/CUPS1.1/English/KOC652UX.ppd /usr/share/ppd/openprinting/ without success even when restarting the computer.

I am brand new to Ubuntu (1 day). I can find my way round most things but I can't print to my Canon Pixma. I have tried to download Australian drivers from a 2007 thread but when I try to download I get the error message "wrong architecture i386". My computer uses an AMD Athlon IIx3 processor. When I say can't print, the file goes into a print queue but the printer does not respond at all. I can see the printer when I go into system, admin, printing.

First of all I must admit that I am quite new with linux, and maybe the problem I am experiencing is something trivial. Nevertheless I don't have any idea about how to handle it. When I try to print a file with Okular or with Acroread what happens is that the applications crashes and I have to terminate it, and the file is not printed.
