Jul 28, 2009We have to (re)write a bunch of scripts to download files from remote ftp servers, where we won't know the names beforehand; move the files to an archive folder on the FTP server; copy the files to the correct servers on our LAN; and log the file information in Oracle.Our current scripts are for a windows product called ScriptFTP that provides a nice little language. It does everything except the logging, but we're wanting to get rid of Windows.
I have recently been given the job of maintaining the code, and I'm looking for a good language for simple, robust ftp scripts that will work on Linux. We have some customers with remarkably unreliable FTP servers. If necessary, I can write another program to handle the logging to Oracle. I'm usually a C++ developer, so a similar syntax is a bonus. I also want to be able to hand this over to an entry-level programmer later.
So far, I'm intrigued by PHP, but I've hardly had a chance to look at it for any scripting. I like the idea of being able to loop through the files individually and even be able to skip over anything that looks like it's currently being written (either based on the file name or date/time). I've thought about writing something in C++ that would take a simple config file instead of a full blown script. However, I don't want the maintenance, unless someone writes a quality FTP library that is inexpensive (hopefully free) for commercial use.

I was trying to get Voodoo Motion Tracking software to work, and it was having trouble locating some Qt Libs, so I decided it was a good idea to move its included libs into /user/lib32 directory. Voodoo now works, but Skype instead comes up with:

1. Main OS partition mounted on /
2. Storage partition mounted on /home
3. Swap partition
Why and when would I need to have a boot partition? Even if I dual boot two OSs, I just make one more partition for that other OS. So what's the purpose of a boot partition?

Aug 1, 2010Previously after doing aptitude upgrade, my pidgin seems broken with no gui shown. So I decided to download the latest source from pidgin website and build it from source, but I think I made situation worse because it then complained that ssl lib was needed. Then I removed the libpurple (e.g. aptitude purge libpurple0 libpurple-bin libpurple-dev) and reinstalled pidgin (aptitude install pidgin). Now it shows the error
pidgin: symbol lookup error: pidgin: undefined symbol: purple_media_element_info_get_type
I searched on the internet and can not find a solution. The clues on the internet says that's because the piding I use is the older version of libpurple. But I think I've removed all with purge and reinstalled it. Maybe some legacy binary is referenced. What or where it might be? Or where there may contain related information.

Here's an example: I want to know when a certain door is open, so I can have a switch closed when the door is closed and opened when the door is opened. When opened or closed, the computer will receive a signal and I can have some software intercept this signal and process it to my liking (i.e. ring a bell/text message me/email me/etc).
I know I will have to create a simple driver, software to make use of this signal, etc... I am willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. I really dont know what is the role of rotate( will this be carried on only for next 4times i mean upto 400MB; (4times*file reaches 100MB)? and also what could be the purpose of postrotate?
