I'm wondering how to map a script to a keyboard key one of the ones i don't use.
i have looked up all the programs and text i could find on google but nothing really solid has popped up. the general idea is to run it from the GUI (KDE) preferably in the background as it takes awhile for it to run.
I'm a used Ubuntu user on a pc, and I like the french keyboard layout because it allows me to type accentued characters easily.I found a win-fr keyboard layout but it's much like windows and not so good.I found xmodmap.fr keyboard layout and I'd like to know if it was possible use it with my Mac SL 10.6.5, maybe I could do xmodmap xmodmap.fr or a way to convert to mac layout file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
I defined a variant to my keyboard layout (Italian) editing the file/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/it and adding this block:

When I use the down arrow on my new keyboard it also does and enter key as well. When I use the left and right arrow keys and hold them it doesn't keep going. It just clicks once and I have to pressing it over and over again. Any one know the correct settings to setup my keyboard? It's a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard.

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).
When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.
Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)
Recently i have bought a Dell Inspiron n5010 laptop and installed ubuntu 10.10. I have a windows 7 installed as well. In windows Us English Table for IBM Arabic 238_L keyboard layout works for my pc. But, i can not find this layout in my ubuntu.

My USB Keyboard does not boot with any distro i've tried so far. I've tried Libranet, Mandrake, and Redat so far. They all do the same thing. They're all completely dead in the water and I believe its because they're all looking for a PS/2 Keyboard, but I only have a USB Keyboard. The error basically is the same throughout all of my attempts here it is: Keyboard Timeout - AT Keyboard not present? Hope my first problem has a decent resolution cuz i'm really interested in getting an FTP and HTTP web server up and running!

I'm following the instructions for troubleshooting here but the pipe "|" key is not working - a tilda "~" shows up when I press it.I'm wondering if this is because of the keyboard being set as UK instead of US? I did have to change this setting at the graphical login initally, whether from choosing this setting by mistake or the installer choosing it automatically when I chose English UK for the language.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS M2010. It came from the factory with Vista and was converted to Fedora 6 within a day of receiving it. With the release of Fedora 8 it was upgraded. With the release of Fedora 10, it was reinstalled from scratch. Now I am trying to reinstall from scratch again while moving to Fedora 13.
The install itself goes smoothly enough (personal problems with trying to hunt down a blank DVD or large enough USB stick aside). After the initial setup and copying the files to the HDD, the machine reboots and the DVD ejects as expected. After the reboot, the firstboot procedure picks up and installation continues. The third screen of firstboot is Create User. The problem is, I can't create a user. The keyboard does absolutely nothing, so I can't type my name. Since creating a user is required, I can't bypass this screen.
During the DVD-based portion of installation, the keyboard worked just fine (root password and hostname were typed with no problem). The mouse works just fine throughout the entire process. Editing the GRUB prompt to start at Runlevel 3 brings me to text-based setup. Like the GUI setup, I have no keyboard. I can't use the arrow keys to move to the Keyboard configuration menu item. None of the previous Fedora installs had this problem.
I'm running Ubuntu on a Macbook Pro. How do you right-click using the keyboard in this setup? I've read that holding down the command key simulates pressing the "context menu" button on a Windows machine, but this behavior doesn't seem to be present in Ubuntu. I also don't see any way to configure this in Ubuntu's keyboard shortcut preferences dialog. Is there anyway else to do it?

I am trying to prepare a USB stick by modifying those files, so that when I boot from USB it opens VNC and puts a static IP of 192.168.1.125. How can I enable VNC and a static IP so that from my laptop I can do the installation of Ubuntu 11.04 without using a keyboard or mouse?[URL]..
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a home-theater computer hooked up to my TV. It has a keyboard of its own, but I don't like to have to drag it out just to queue up a movie. The thing is, I can use my netbook computer to wirelessly ssh into the home-theater computer and do all kinds of things...copy and transcode files, etc--but nothing GUI. I would like to be able to simply run mplayer from my ssh session and have it show up on the TV. When I ssh into my HTPC and try to run mplayer I get "no X session". Is there some way to do this, so that I can either launch graphical programs on the host computer's x-server, or totally use the keyboard/mouse of my netbook as if they were connected directly to the HTPC?

I've linux installed in a laptop, and when I do Esc-TAB with the keyboard of the laptop, the autocomplete works. But, if a connect an USB keyboard to the laptop, the autocomplete of the mc doesn't work in the USB keyboard, but stills work in the laptop keyboard.

I have used the mouse/keyboard wizard (Choose keyboard layout for your country) in Setup and made all the right choices but nothing changes. In the 'Advanced Xorg keyboard configuration', when I choose 'layouts', I am told 'Your xorg.config file does not contain any Xkb layout options'.
What else can I do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am just entering the Linux world. All these years I wanted to test Linux but did not have the resources to make a new computer. Then I found Puppy Linux by chance. Nearly all the work I do with Windows 7/XP can be done with Puppy Linux. I am running it from a CD. I developed a smartfont for an Indic language called Sinhala, which uses ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1, SBCS) character set.It makes typing Sinhala, one of the more complex of Indic scripts, easy.
Essentially, this is a transliteration of the 'complex' script into Latin character set and then showing it back in the native script by way of the smartfont. See it here: [URL] Of course, you have no clue what it says. If you copy the text and look, you'll understand what is going on. You can type it with the dead-key keyboard. Only problem is that in certain situations, the font makes conjoint letters where you don't want them. You can prevent it by inserting the ZWNJ, Zero-width non-joiner (u200C), but the keyboard does not have it. Is there a way to edit the keyboard layout and make a modified key layout?
Suppose I am almost sure that from last Thursday, 3.00pm up to the same day at 10.00pm I was away from the machine, but not absolutely sure. Linux probably knows better than me. Maybe there will be a text file from which I could infer the keyboard was idle from Thu 2.40pm up to 11.10 pm. In this case, I would reach absolute certainty. But where could such file be in the /. tree or what could its name be (for in the latter case an updatedb followed by locate would do)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Debian running in Russian and English. The Russian keyboard layout isn't the typewriter standard, which I know and much prefer to the one it gives me.
NOTE: I am NOT using KDE or gnome. (ratpoison is my windows manager.) I need to solve this via CLI-based solution, I want it to affect the keyboard I get both in ratpoison and in a basic CLI tty (when I'm not in X).
Now I connect usb keyboard to my machine, and I would like to know how I can get device file name of this usb keyboard. I know it is /dev/input/event# file,but which event# file? I tried to do [dmesg | grep usb] , but kernel message don't tell me what I would like to know.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI access a linux server shell via putty, but many of the keys I use do not translate across, up, down, left and right all are seen as ^[[A, ^[[B, ^[[D and ^[[C; But so is C-up, C-down, C-left and C-right. And enter is seen as C-j (which move down to the next line), and backspace is seen as C-h, which is backwards delete.
How can I stop these keys being translated into other keys (so I can, for example, configure C-h and backspace to perform two different functions) and what's doing this translation (Putty, the kernel, the shell)?
