OpenSUSE Network :: Network Login Starter - Set Up A Server - Centralized Username And Password
Jan 21, 2010I'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.
Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.
What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication
Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").
So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.
I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.

Jan 29, 2009I've tried Ubuntu, Arch, and most recently Fedora but the SUSE GNOME environment blows everything else away!
The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).

Jul 23, 2009I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server.What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. Is that correct?

Jul 2, 2011I have setup a nis server and client. At first I didn't have a local user defined on the client. The client then used the user and passwords from NIS, so that was ok.
The problem then is, that when the server is down, I couldn't login to my client anymore. So I created a local user with the same name on the client but with a different password (after I shut the nis server down, if nis server was on, I couldn't create a local user with the same name). I then edited etc/nssswitch.conf as follows:

Apr 18, 2010I'm trying to connect to a wifi network where it hijacks all requests and redirects you to a page where you have to agree to a terms of use before it lets you connect to the actual outside world. This is a pretty common practice, and usually doesn't pose much of a problem. However, I've got a computer running Ubuntu 9.10 server with no windowing system. How can I use the command line to agree to the terms of use? I don't have internet access on the computer to download packages via apt-get or anything like that. Sure, I can think of any number of workarounds, but I suspect there's an easy way to use wget or curl or something.
Basically, I need a command line solution for sending an HTTP POST request essentially clicking on a button. For future reference, it'd be helpful to know how to send a POST request with, say, a username and password if I ever find myself in that situation in another hotel or airport.

I have to enter the password before I can connect to my network. Feb 10, 2010I've set up password-less login for user1 on a Ubuntu machine to login automatically into a Fedora box using the publickey authentication method. Everything is working smoothly. Now, there is a user2 on Fedora but he does not have an account on Ubuntu.
I tried to login as user2 from Ubuntu to but got the following error :

Predictably neither scp or sftp work either. I have several questions as a result.
1.Is the SSH server rejecting user2 login because I am inadvertently using user1 keys (as I am logged in as user1) ?
2. Do I need to have a user2 account on Ubuntu and public/private key authentication setup with Fedora for user2 to be able to login ?
3. Is there a method I can use to password login as user2 from Ubuntu to Fedora (even though there is no user2 account on Ubuntu) AND still keep password-less login for user1 or do I have to have password-less login for both ?
At present the only way to access the user2 account from Ubuntu is to SSH using the user1 account and then su to user2.

I don't get request for my password. If I try to SSH using PuTTY in windows, everything is OK. Then I pinged the server and got the following message:

It repeated over and over. I tried NAT and Bridged network connection on the VM, but I'm not sure what this means completely, so I may have messed up somewhere around here.

I am not (I repeat "not") an experienced Linux-user, so maybe I need to get things with a spoon here, but the wireless networking in Mandriva is similar to the one in Fedora, and in Mandriva it worked fine, in Fedora I cant get connected. Current setup: 3 machines
A: Zenoss host- owned by me, Access via putty with my keypair
B: instance- owned by me, access via putty with my keypair
C: instance- owned by teammate, access via putty with their keypair
I'm able to set up password-less SSH login between the instances I have created (A to B), however, I cannot between my Zenoss monitoring instance and any instances not created by me(A to C). Whenever I try to copy the id_rsa.pub file to these instances, I keep getting a Permission denied(public key) error. I believe the problem is that I have log in to my instances using my keypair but must use the the other instances creator's keypair to access their instances.

Jan 25, 2011I recently moved into a new apartment complex and the building's internet requires a browser login (the wireless network itself isn't secured). If I boot into Windows 7, I can reach the prompt for username/password after instructing the browser to proceed past an invalid certificate.
However, when I start either Firefox or Chrome in 10.10 NBR, I can't reach either the warning about the invalid certificate or the prompt. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated as it'd be nice to get my netbook up and running after the move.

Once I restarted the Virtual Machine and after that it is accepting the same password to login. Their account would be captured by a universal account say, 'generic_user', and then they would be directed to one of my python scripts with the username and password they supplied for initial login. At this point my script would capture their SSHD process ID and allow/deny their existence based upon a MySQL/Subscription check.
The part I'm having trouble with is with PAM and allowing the user to login with any credentials and be successfully authenticated under the generic account. Beyond that, everything is great.
