General :: Installing Ubuntu From A Flashdrive Alongside - Ngside Windows - Error Message - No Root File System Is Defined

I can use Ubuntu from my flash drive, but I want to install it in a partition alongside windows. When I try to do this, I come to an 'allocate drive space' window, but whatever I do I get the error message: 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I just don't know what this means, or what to do next. I'm loathe to ditch windows, and I don't want to have to use a flashdrive all the time.

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Bootable System Image With ClamAV Or Similar Installed?

Jul 28, 2011

All of my PCs are set up to either run Ubuntu directly, or are dual boot Ubuntu and some variant of Windows. One of the things I like about this is that in the rare instances that I get a virus I can simply boot into Ubuntu and run ClamAV to remove the virus from there.

I have a friend who recently picked up a nasty virus and we are having a hard time getting his machine to boot at all without all sort of strange behaviors. Under that scenario I can't trust Wubi to work correctly. Soo....

Is it possible for me to create a bootable CD, DVD or USB drive from my machine? I'd like to use my machine because I can update the virus definitions before I create the image and then use that to clean his machine.

Debian :: Installing On USB Flashdrive ?

Dec 16, 2010

I am looking at installing Debian on a USB flash drive (not in a read only manner, but with configuration changes saved). I have read the eeepc usb stick installation guide, and just have a few remaining questions. Is there anyway to force the usb stick to stay in the same address (as it will be in a system with two sata drives, in hot swap caddies). Apart from having /tmp and /proc on ramdisks, is there anything else that is recomended to avoid excessive wear on the memory stick.

Ubuntu :: Install Lyx But It Started Installing Tex Live On The Flashdrive?

Mar 25, 2010

I installed 9.10 onto a flash drive with 1 gig of presistence. I tried to install Lyx but it started installing Tex Live on the flashdrive. So I stopped it and installed Tex Live on my own using the installer from its site onto the hard drive. However, some space on the flashdrive was used by the failed install. Anyway I can get that space back? Additionally, if I want to swap to a larger flashdrive in the future? Could I just install the same way onto a larger flashdrive, set a larger presistence, and copy over all files from my original flashdrive? Sorry if I'm butching terms, I'm pretty new at this.

edit: Erm...I think when I deleted the things in the tmp folder because had a lot of archive files in there...I might have deleted something important. Since it is also now asking me for an administrator password that I didn't set. Trash doesn't have anything in there any more.

I have to make a bootable USB stick which can allow me to connect to the PC from my Laptop with a VNC connection, then the complete installation using IP to IP. I did this with the following:

Download [URL] Extract the files of .iso to my laptop Add the manual file in CentOS-6.0-i386-minimal/isolinux/ks.cfg

install
lang en_US.UTF-8
keyboard us
timezone --utc Europe/Brussels
rootpw --iscrypted $6$i5qEWD.
selinux --disabled

[Code]....

This allows you to modify your original iso files with the new contents and pack it as one .iso file

Finally load unetbootin and burn to your USB or disk or CD

Ubuntu :: Recognizing Usb Bootable When Installing?

Jan 17, 2011

I currently am dual booting linux mint and windows 7. My only hard drive is partitioned in two, one for linux mint and one for windows 7. I installed linux mint with a usb bootable.

I want to replace my linux mint with ubuntu, however, my the usb bootable ubuntu isn't being recognized. I restart the laptop with the usb inside, but it just goes to the grub screen that lets me choose between linux mint or windows 7. The boot order has USB in first position as well. I used the usb creator as suggested on the ubuntu downloads page to create a usb bootable too. I've done this installation before with both ubuntu and mint... but now it's not working.

I tried "sudo update-grub" within linux mint with the usb plugged in, and restarting afterwards, but I still can't see the usb in the grub screen.

Ubuntu :: ClamAV-clamd - Can't Connect To UNIX Socket /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl

This started happening sometime yesterday afternoon on a server that's been trouble free for years.

My Ubuntu update is scheduled to run every month on the 5th, so this was roughly 10 days after that. So it seems to me it's not update related. The only thing I've done on the server lately is update a spamassassin rule which required an amavis restart. That was done earlier in the week.

I've already reviewed issues at [url] and all the conditions are correct for the more recent How to.

I can also confirm that, in fact, /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl does not exist.
