General :: How To Restrict Use Of A Computer?

Nov 22, 2010

Suppose that some person is insomniac because of a bad habit of chatting on the IRC every night until 3AM. That completely ruins this person's life because he is unable to wake up on time to attend his exams, because he will be fully exhausted everyday and will feel depressive.

That person is conscious of this bad behaviour, and would accept any help including installing a software on his own computer granting me admin privileges to install it.

Do you know of such a software that ideally would: Would prevent use of the computer at certain time ranges, let's say 11PM — 6AM Would gracefully shutdown the computer at the beginning of that time range (not killing all the applications brutally), and shutdown it if the user attempts to switch it back on Would warn 10 minutes beforehand Could occasionally be disabled if I give a one-time password to that person?

That person uses Linux, and I am curious of knowing what is available for that purpose. It is kind of a parental control, but not for a child.

Under Linux, I would like to be able to launch anything from command line in a "safe" environment, i.e. be assured that it can't read or write any file on my computer, and even better if it couldn't access the network.I thought about creating a user with reading rights only in the current folder (and nowhere else), and su to this user to launch the command, would this work ? And what about the network ?

General :: Restrict SSH User To Connection From One Machine

Jan 4, 2011

During set-up of a home server (running Kubuntu 10.04), I created an admin user for performing administrative tasks that may require an unmounted home. This user has a home directory on the root partition of the box. The machine has an internet-facing SSH server, and I have restricted the set of users that can connect via SSH, but I would like to restrict it further by making admin only accessible from my laptop (or perhaps only from the local 192.168.1.0/24 range). General :: Restrict Output To Display One File Each?

Jul 27, 2010

I use 'grep -Ri "mypattern" .' to search for all files in the current directory recursively that contain "mypattern". But this command returns every single occurence, so that if a given file has several occurences of the pattern, the screen fills up pretty quick. More than likely, there's a way to restrict the output so that it only displays each file once, no matter how many occurences it contains, but I couldn't find how to do it.

General :: Cousin Unplugged The Computer - Freezes And The Computer Reboots Over And Over

Apr 17, 2009

I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.

I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?

General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer

Jun 28, 2011

I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network. My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

General :: Restrict Web Access So *only* Firefox Can Access The Web

Nov 15, 2010

I'm a terrible procrastinator, it's awe-inspiring annoying and stressful. This in combination with being a information-holic makes the Internet fairly lethal to me; I risk failing my college course because of it, so trust me when I say I'm deadly serious about this.

However, I think you guys may be able to help out, and maybe this will also help some people here with similar problems:

Because so much of my time is taken up with Interwebz, I thought to carefully restrict my internet use. It's not prefect, but it's part of a solution.

To date: I have Firefox and the ProCon extension which uses a whitelist of websites I can access. The extension cannot be uninstalled/disabled and I use a long hex password split into 3 parts, two of which my friends have (so I have to ask my friends for the password parts in order to update the whitelist, hence making it socially awkward to fritter away time online).

So far, it has worked a treat and I'm really pleased with it.

However, this is the problem:

I need to restrict web access so *only* Firefox can access the web. That way I cannot use Chrome/Opera, or even (shudder) use wine to run Internet Exploder.

Software :: Access Computer A's Shares As Well As The Third Computer, The Aforementioned Computers Cannot Access Computer B

May 28, 2011

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.

Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.

What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.

What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.
