General :: Ubuntu 9.10 Networking Hostname / Can Ping The Linux Box Using Its Hostname From A WinXp. But Cannot Do The Reverse?
Jan 3, 2010I have a network of 2 WinXP machines and one linux box. I have fiddled around with the settings as you do when learning. The network is working. The network neighbourhood on the WinXP machines recognise the linux box and vice versa, (the linux Places|Network recognises the 2 WinXP). I can Ping the linux box using its hostname from a WinXp. But I cannot do the reverse. I get an 'unknown host' response. I can ping the linux to itself using its hostname.

Jan 10, 2011I used the ext3 format when I formatted my partition prior to installing Ubuntu10.10. I had accidentally deleted a file and began the process to get it back. It wasn't critical but helpful to recover the file. To make a long story short I ran into to some unexpected road blocks. I tried to use PhotoRec to get the job done but with no success.
I'm just looking down the road in the event I might have to recover something important.If it would be better going back to the Fat32 file system I would rather do it sooner than later. Just as a side note I am dual booting between linux and windows.

Feb 16, 2011Say I have a file that's downloading (from a source that's hard to re-download from), but accidentally deleted from the filesystem namespace (/tmp/blah), and I'd like to recover this file. Normally I could just cp /proc/$PID/fd/$FD /tmp/blah, but in this case that would only get me a partial snapshot, since the file is still downloading. Furthermore, once the download completes, the downloading process (e.g. Chrome) will close the FD. Any way to recover by inode/create a hard link? Any other solutions? If it makes any difference, I'm mainly concerned with ext4.

Dec 18, 2010I removed my Ubuntu install and decided to replace it with Debian. I backed up the /home directory onto the Windoze installation on the other hard drive. That was a "home.disk" file. Using dosfsck is useless because the correct file length is the cluster length, not the (shorter) one in the table, and dosfsck only proposes to shorten the file, which I won't do.
Question: how to recover a file using the FAT cluster chain instead of using the stored length in the FAT table?

Jul 3, 2011My main hard disk died and I replaced it. After installing windows in a small partition in /dev/sda, I thought I will try linux mint and went for it. (I need windows to play AOE, but ubuntu is my primary OS)I didnt see the options properly or some distraction, I choose the "install alongside windows" option probably expecting it to install it in the unallocated partition next to the windows installation. I had completely forgotten my second internal drive /dev/sdb which has the backup data. Linux mint went and installed itself on that drive.
Is there a way to recover individual files from the second harddrive. Now if I boot or open it through live cd, all I see in the linux mint file systems. I want to aleast recover my CV/resume from the second drive. The second drive is a single ext4 file system The old drive is completely dead, it doesnt even get recognized when I attach it to SATA.
Networking :: FC13 Install Can Ping By Hostname - Ssh By Hostname Fails
Jul 29, 2010I'm having an issue on two Fedora Core 13 machines where I can ping others by hostname, but the hostname resolution fails whenever I use ssh/scp/vnc/etc. I can still do these things by IP address, just not by hostname. RHEL5.3 machines on the same network with the same configuration do not seem to have this problem.
Here's the not-so-quick-and-dirty description of the situation:
I know that there is a virtual router at 192.168.31.1 and another at 192.168.30.1. I also know that there is another network (let's call it 90.90.90.0) and on that network lies a number of resources. By nature of this configuration, any machine on 90.90.90.0 can be accessed by any 192.168.x.x, but not the other way around. Beyond that is out of my hands and currently out of my scope of knowledge.
I have a dnsmasq server on 90.90.90.10 that operates as a secondary nameserver, another machine out of my sphere of influence is the primary nameserver (90.90.90.31).
The secondary nameserver on 90.90.90.10 holds the hostnames of our development machines. The problem is that in some cases, while I can ping by hostname all day long, services such as ssh, scp, vncviewer, etc all fail to resolve the hostname. In other cases I can do all of these things.
Every machine has an equivalent resolv.conf:
As an example, I will show the output of a handful of my development machines:
I also included columbia as a one-way test -- even though it cannot access 30.x or 31.x, they can access it:
columbia -- physical machine, Red Hat Enterprise 5.3, IP 192.168.100.200
Okay, so here are the various outputs. Remember, nibbler, discovery, and atlantis can ALL:
- Ping by IP address
- Ping by hostname
- ssh, scp, vnc, etc by IP addess
Additionally, the SERVFAIL reply from 90.90.90.31 is expected since my dnsmasq server is on the secondary server.
Note that the only machine that can both ping and ssh/scp/etc by hostname is nibbler, which also happens to be the only one of the three running RHEL5.3 instead of FC13. Other virtual and physical machines running on the 192.168.31.0 and 192.168.30.0 networks (all running RHEL5.3) work just like nibbler does. So the problem seems to only affect machines running FC13.
Final note: selinux is disabled, iptables is disabled, ip6tables is disabled.
Other than that, discovery is a brand-spanking-new install straight off of the FC13 DVD. atlantis has been around longer, but its just a file server so I haven't done anything too crazy to it.

May 22, 2011I have an ubuntu 10.04 server with hostname "abc.domain.com". However, due to migration, we had to change to hostname to something else, "xyz".
I have done changing /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname and run /etc/init.d/hostname start.
Checking the hostname and all shows it is now using hostsname of xyz. However, email sending out is still using old hostname. We have some scripts that will send out alerts like failed rsync or hdd space full to my email account. But I see the sender is still "root@abc.domain.com".
How do change that to xyz? I am using postfix. I have edited main.cf and restarted postfix but no go.

Fedora Servers :: Accessing Index File By Hostname?
Sep 6, 2011I have my home network up and running. I can access my index file by the ip I gave to eth0 - 192.168.0.2
I put this same ip into etc/hosts:
192.168.0.2 localhost localhost.localdomain
One space separates the hostnames from the ip in /etc/hosts.
The hostname command returns: localhost.localdomain
I have /etc/resolv.conf configured the right way, so I can use my isp's DNS servers. I know this because yum works and I can ping anywhere by url. The next step is to learn to access the index file by url locally on my own network.

Jul 6, 2010I'm having one of those days, and managed to delete some virtualbox disk images. But the virtual machines are still up and running just fine. So the deleted disk images still exist somewhere.
Is it possible to recover these files? Since they are in use and locked by Virtualbox I guess they still are completely intact and fine on the disk, but that they will be permanently deleted once VirtualBox stops.

Jan 4, 2010I have an Acer Aspire One running NBR 9.10. A few days ago it "went wonky", wouldn't boot and would just seem to start and then shut off before getting to the logon screen. I managed to boot from a USB stick and run check and fix in Gparted. It found a slew of errors in the file system. Unfortunately, it still won't boot, now it just hangs. I assume some of boot files were damaged.
Now I have two problems:
1. Is there a way to repair the damage? Or just wipe the disk and start over?
2. I need to get my e-mail off of the hard drive. I can mount the drive after booting from a USB stick, but the thunderbird directory is locked. Is there a way around this?
