General :: Freecom FSG3 - SU Permission Denied When Attempting Chmod Or Chown?
Apr 27, 2010
I am desperately trying to recover two folders from a Freecom FSG 3 NAS. As far as I am aware it is running Linux 2.6 based on Snapgear. After working through the hardwares' recovery procedure a number of times, the state of the device appears to get worse and worse. So I have attempted to rescue the files by using a program called Putty to access the device over SSH.When I access the device using Putty I login as admin. The folders I need to recover are located in the home folder. Listing the contents of the directory I get...
/home $ ls -la
ls: ./.twonkymedia: Permission denied
ls: ./Sarah: Permission denied
[code]....

I have setup my debian 8 web server.
For some reason I am having some issues with permissions of some images. They don't render because they are not set to 644. Now for some reason when I uploaded these files onto my shared hosting with cPanel the files work fine and permissions are fine. I can see there is a permission issue for the files locally on my Mac (OS X - El Capitan).
When I changes these locally on Mac the permissions go all weird and are prefixed with Custom, rather than mac-user-name: Read & Write, staff: Read, everyone: no access. then changes to custom: read & write etc. So then i tried changing permissions on web server see below and I get permission denied and after all the files are gone, i can't delete the images folder through SFTP or SSH. I changed back the image to 755 and tried deleting and still nothing. Not sure what the problem is. Before I chmod I checked that the images are set to the correct user and group as per the rest of the site.
So I try:
Code: Select alluser_name@debian:/var/www/html/_files$ chmod -R 644 images
and I get this return:
Code: Select allchmod: cannot access ‘images/box-icon.svg’: Permission denied
chmod: cannot access ‘images/ie-icon.svg’: Permission denied
chmod: cannot access ‘images/google-plus-icon.svg’: Permission denied
chmod: cannot access ‘images/mobile-ready-icon.svg’: Permission denied
chmod: cannot access ‘images/404.jpg’: Permission denied

I've been trying to fix an issue with NetBook 10.10 freezing on shutdown. I found another post which I'm assuming may be my solution, but I get a permission denied when I try to follow it's instructions.
Here's the post:
Shutdown problem with netbook version 10.10
Add "blacklist rt2800pci" to "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-wlan.conf" with the following command:
Code:
sudo echo "blacklist rt2800pci" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-wlan.conf then reboot.
Suspend to Ram works reliably.
Hibernate to disk works reliably.
Random boot failures have disappeared.
When I type the line in the terminal is says "Permission Denied".

nfs mounted directory which is mounted rw. I and everyone else are members of a common group. We all have write permissions in the tree: All files and directories in the tree are in the common group. All directories are set to 775 and all files are set to 664 or 775, as appropriate. If a file is owned by someone else, even though the file and the directory are group writable, I get permission denied when I try to chmod the file.
Here's the command synopsis:
997 > ls -l portparms.txt

I'm trying to make a particular file accessible on my computer ( /dev/uinput ) without having to use sudo or su - I've set up a wiimote to act as a remote for my media player, and it requires access to that file. When I use chmod, chgrp or chown to change the file's settings, it enables access to the file - however, when I reboot my PC, the settings get reset, and I have to change the access rights when I first use it again. I've tried using the following commands to make the changes (substituting my username/groupname as user and group below), as root:

I occasionally get into areas in Linux where I get my own ignorance demonstrated....System is a core quad running OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit on a LAN at home. I added a 750 GB SATA drive with the idea of putting all media on the drive i.e.music primarily plus a few movies and making the data sharable by anyone across the LAN i.e. the computer in the living room with an audio line to the stereo. My room mate is strictly a Windoze user so I figured if she wanted stuff on her machine as well then format the new drive with NTFS which I did using GPartd. I then set the drive to mount as /storage under root.
I loaded the music library &c and although I can play music from my user account on this machine I can not add music or videos or anything else except as root. I dont want to have to change to /root to do this. I attempted a chmod tonight as su from a terminal then in the root GUI using dolphin and resetting the permissions under properties and nothing changes. The drive appears in the filesystem as /storage with ownership as root. The permissions are
drwxr-xr-x 1 root users 4096 2010-03-27 22:55 storage
trying to chmod as root has no effect at all. I would like to be able to add content from any machine on the LAN plus be able to play a movie or video as well as music (I assume this would need the execute permission) but chmod -R 777 storage has no effect. Neither does cd'ing to the directory and trying to change ownership or permissions on the individual files or directories on the drive.Command line as su or as root from that gui, no difference. I do a
chmod g+w,o+rw storage
and the command appears to execute. However I ls -l and find the permissions unchanged. I obviously have or am doing something wrong, possibly in the way I set the drive up in the first place.

I need to actively make sure some files, in a specific directory, are chmod 750 and owned by transmission:media-daemons. Other users will save to this directory, with other permissions and UID/GID but I must make sureto reinforce this default.
So I have this on my /etc/crontab:
Code:
# /etc/crontab: system-wide crontab
# Unlike any other crontab you don't have to run the `crontab'
# command to install the new version when you edit this file
# and files in /etc/cron.d. These files also have username fields,
# that none of the other crontabs do.

Need to recurse a subdir tree, to apply chmod and chown and ls -al .
chmod -R xxx yyy does not function properly; -R is nonfunctional.
chown -R xxx yyy functions OK.
Is there a script which will follow a subdir tree and open each subdir ? glene77is

that works to disallow non-owners from renaming the file, but what I wouldlike to do is disallow EVERYONE ( including the owner of the file ) fromediting, moving, or changing the filename once it is created. the only personwho should be able to make those changes is a special user.

The root user of Linux doesn't have permission to read/write a regular file, unless all users have permission to read/write this file, like below:
drwxrwsrwx ....... file_name
However the owner of the file can still read/write this file.
AND:
0) not the problem of execution, just read/write
1) not the problem of device because regular user can read/write it.
2) the result of command id:
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)
so I don't think it's the problem of group.

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this issue I'm having using acl(s). I have a user I want to grant access to logs I have stored on my server. I am doing this by setting up an acl to that directory where the logs are stored. My settings seem to look fine, however I cannot read or even reach the directory with the said user; we'll call him "userP".
Here is my code:
To ensure userP has access to the parent directory (jboss) code...
Not sure what I'm doing wrong here: there are no errors in the logs; just "Permission denied" however I try to get to the directory.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

After I type sshd: 192.168.1.11 : allow and
sshd : ALL : Deny
I can't access hosts.allow or deny any more.
It says "Permission denied"
Before I typed that, I can access hosts.allow and deny.
By the way, I was wondering what command to edit hosts.allow.
For example, I want to put sshd: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx : allow in that file.
