We already offer backed-up data storage to our users, but no means of say arching original data sets for long term storage(NIH, etc rules). Something that could be user initiated, where they login into the archive server, tell it I want such and such files archives, and on its own it takes those files and gives them to a tape library(drive+robot).

Aug 25, 2010Our application uses a dynamically loaded shared object library (codec library) to compress and decompress audio streams.
There happens to be several static and global variables in this shared object library. Hence it is not possible to process two interleaved unrelated media streams using this shared object codec library because each stream corrupts/changes the contents of these static/global variables.
Is there a way through which a context save (save contents of data segment of shared object) and a context load (load previously saved contents of data segment of shared object)operation can be performed on the shared object library. This way the context for each media stream can be saved and loaded before and after processing the "other" media stream respectively.
Software :: ./configure Problem For Libsf Library Due To Apparently Missing Libdb Library ?

It seems the file libdb does exist. man dbopen displays man page for dbopen. I also tried to ln -s /usr/lib/libdb.a and libdb.so /lib dir but all were in vain.

May 27, 2010I think that the solution is very simple, but I cannot reach this solution. I'm trying to build an B.so that uses A.so.
A.so is compiled using C;
B.so is compiled using C++;
Inside "Aso.h" file I'had declared:

There's no error to compile that, this library seems to be compiled correctly, but using the "nm" command the Aso.so functions appear with "U" of undefined. Trying to build an executable using the Bso.so library, I got this error: /lib/../lib/libBso.so: undefined reference to `foo(int, int, int)' I think that to solve this problem it's only link the Aso.so with the .o files generated at the compilation phase of my Bso. Using the "ldd" command I'm able to see that Bso.so depends on Aso.so, so what am I missing?
Programming :: SDL Static Library - Shared Library ?
Apr 7, 2009I'm reading about shared, static, and dynamic libraries. What is SDL? Is it static, shared, or dynamic?
I always thought a library would be a lot of .h and .cpp files compiled separately into .o files and then if you compiled your own program you could use the -l parameter to link the library and it was all compiled together. Now I'm not so sure.
I don't even see any SDL .cpp files in my system anywhere. All I have are lots of SDL .h files in /usr/include/SDL and I don't really understand the code in them.
I'm making a wild guess here: SDL is a shared library. SDL itself is NOT compiled into my program, therefore SDL must be on any system my program tries to run on. When I compile and link SDL all it needs is the header files to know what SDL function and objects it can use. And then on every system it uses an already compiled SDL shared library thingy somewhere.
So... where is that part of SDL? All I can find are header files.
I'm thinking the advantage of shared libraries is that someone could say update SDL on their own system and take advantage of the new features without having to download new executables with the new version of SDL compiled into them for every program that uses SDL.
So if I'm making an editor and a game engine and they both use a lot of the same .cpp and .h files that I wrote and I'm tired of updating one and then the other and I need to turn them into a library, then a shared library might be kind of a silly solution. I could just make a static library. Right? Because it's not SDL. Nobody else is ever going to use this library.

Now I have the following problem the LVM file system don't mount properly.If I open the mount point I see only a few files of the LVM disk. If I want to unmount the disk I get the following error:

Aug 12, 2011I'm trying to upgrade to Firefox 5 on RHEL5, and am getting the following error:
./firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /home/isdtc/tdiakiw/bin/firefox5/firefox/libxul.so)
As the computer is a work machine,I don't have access to update the libraries directly. To try and get around this I downloaded the libstdc++.so.6.0.10 library.strings libstdc++.so.6.0.10 | grep GLIBCXX shows:

GLIBCXX_3.4.1
GLIBCXX_3.4.2[code]....
Is there some way of forcing firefox to use this library instead? I have tried adding the directory containing the new library (with a so name) to LD_LIBRARY_PATH and then running, but I'm still getting the same error message

i update my libssh from libssh-0.4.2-1.fc13.i686 to libssh-0.4.6-1.fc13.i686, and there are files called libssh.so.4 and libssh.so.4.0.2 in /ur/lib, but i still can't compile it with this command:

General :: Having Music Library In Sync On Several Devices?
Jun 24, 2011I have several devices (server, tower, notebook, android phone). I want to have my music library in sync on all of them. So what I thought of was a revision control system that just takes care of CRUD actions (or rather CRD). Maybe it could keep track of the files using their initial name and tracking any renaming or deletion. All popular software I know (git, svn, cvs, ...) is out of question because they save too much overhead (they diff the binary files).
Streaming doesn't work either for me because I don't always have an internet connection. Synchronizing the music using tools like unison is very inefficient too because I write metadata to the files so their hashsum, timestamp and size change constantly. If there is a diff or sync tool that ignores minor changes in size and ignores timestamp and permissions and so on, it would maybe be fine but I don't know one.

Jun 28, 2011I was unable to compile a program that used libicu42 on Ubuntu 11.04, because Ubuntu 11.04 has only libicu44 and does not have libicu42 installed. So during compile time I used g++ prog.c -L mylib/ to compile the program. mylib had libicu42 (This library is a shared library and has the .so extension). The program compiled successfully, but when I tried to run it, it failed and complained that it did not find libicu42. So I had to manually install libicu42 in /usr/lib. Then the program worked.'ldd prog' revealed that it looked for libicu42 in /usr/libWhat was the point of specifying the library path using -L, if the compiled program looked for the library in /usr/lib? It's almost like it was just to satisfy the compiler.

May 21, 2010I'm interested in modding an open-source turn based game called Advanced Strategic Command or ASC, but to do that I need bunch of libraries. Installing those libraries is very easy in linux, I know but the thing is I'm working with windows in which the building of the libraries is a bit more complex, as you probably know. One of those libraries is the ligsigc++, I'm using VC++ but haven't been successful in building the libsigc++ in VC++. I considered making my life easier with Cygwin (a unix shell for windows) and simply executing ./Configure, Make. I's worked like a charm and the library dll it produced is named cygsigc-2.0-0.dll which made me wonder is compiling a library in cygwin to be linked with VC++ perfectly ok? That is is there any difference in compiling in cygwin and VC++?

I have a Fujitsu S500 document scanner, and have been using the Windows software that came with it to scan and organize various documents (letters, bank statements etc). That software is of very poor quality. Besides, the drivers are proving very tricky to get working on 64-bit Windows 7.

I am trying to install a library on my system that depends on gasnet and it requires me to configure it with the very same options that gasnet was configured with. Gasnet was not originally installed by me, so I cannot tell. I can see bin/, include/, lib/ and share/ directories in the gasnet folder and no other information in it. To be specific, I need to use the same CFLAGS that were used during installation of gasnet. For example, if it was installed using '-g -O2', I have to make sure I use the same CFLAGS here.

Dec 2, 2010I'm running out of disk space in root, so I decide to move /usr/lib64 directory to other partition by creating moving the whole directory to new location and create a softlink in the old location. What I'm planning to do is:
1. Copy the whole directory to new location
2. Make sure if there's no problem in the copy process
3. Create a softlink in the old location pointing to the new location.
However, when I'm comparing the old location and the new location using du command, there's some discrepancies between those two where the new location contain bigger size than the old one. How is this possible?
Is this the proper way to save disk space by creating a softlink?
