I need to source the my /home/me/.bashrc file every time I "su -" to root. Is there any way to automate this? I cannot edit any thing in the root's environment as it is shared by people.

I've been writing a bunch of bash scripts to make possible non-interactive, secure, cron-based SVN checkouts with CollabNet's SVN client and GNOME Keyring Daemon (aka GKD) and one of the scripts was designed to start GKD, harvest its output, essentially a couple of environment variables, and export those variables in shell of a user the script is run as. All upon user login by sourcing a bash script in ~/.bashrc.The problem is that those environment variables will not be exported, because the script is being run in a sub-shell that exits upon it completion and environment variables get unset for good.Well, the question is how can those variables be set permanently, meaning they're exported and kept untouched even across login-logout sessions?

Making a script. This is for my linux class. Basically when you run it, whatever directory it is in, zips everything, backs it up to the folder its in, and also makes a copy of it in the root directory. Here is what I have, but its not running right.

When I add some path in .bashrc by commenting out old path and adding new one like this:
#EXPORT HOME_PLAY=/home/gem/old_play

EXPORT PATH=$PATH:HOME_PLAY
After saving above changes, I enter the command: source ~/.bashrc Now if I do echo $PATH, the path shows both the old PLAY_HOME and new PLAY_HOME. This is really bad and messes up a lot of things in my project. This problem only goes away if I logout or reboot, a rather very long process. What is happening is that the old path is added to new path element and the old path includes the old path element you want to remove.
I have a couple of shell scripts (#!/bin/sh i.e. dash), and I want them to include a common source file for configuration. Since it is my own scripts, they are either in /opt or in a local git repo somewhere. I then make a symbolic link to some sane location in my path, say, ~/bin or /usr/bin.how to figure out which path the config file is at.
I have in the path
/usr/bin/MyScript.sh --> /home/me/somepath/git/Scripts/MyScript.sh
And in the git repo
/home/me/somepath/git/Scripts/MyScript.sh
/home/me/somepath/git/Scripts/MyScript_cfg.sh

I currently have a setup which allows me to connect to all computers on my home network via SSH and RSA keys. I'm very security-conscious, so all of my keys are passphrase protected. I'd like to essentially set something up where I'm running Unison on a cron job to back up to a file server on my network, which we'll call timmy. I've noticed that the first time I try to use a key on my Ubuntu laptop teeks, I get a dialog which pops up asking me to type in my key passphrase. I've heard that for servers needing to make automated backups like this that one should use ssh-agent to ask for the key passphrase on login/server start. How can I set this up on teeks?
I'd essentially like to have the following happen:When I boot and come into the OS, prompt visually for the passphrase as is done when I first use a key.If I SSH into this computer (as it's internet-facing) and I haven't provided the SSH passphrase yet, then prompt for it. (Sometimes, I might need to remotely reboot the machine over SSH, so I'll be SSH'ing into it after it reboots and I'd like to be able to authenticate the key without having to VNC in and do it manually.)

I've read about cron but I guess it's not a solution in this case because whenever computer starts the application must run once.I also have read about the/etc/ rc.local file but I made some tests changing it and they didn't work, the computer starts asking me the login and password but nothing run after that.The inittab was the same. I'd like a function in my .bashrc file that would allow me to pass text to it and echo the text to a specified file. I know it's simple as "echo 'text' >> file," but ideally, I would want to alias the function so I execute something like:

A cluster with a head node and compute nodes. An application with a couple of env variables (App_HOME, PATH) set in .profile (default shell sh). If I login to the head node/compute nodes on a terminal everything works fine. The correct env variables are set and the application works. However, when my application tries to do it, say ssh <compute node1> <application>, it appears the environment variables are not available. It only looks in the minimal /bin, /usr/bin type PATH. This tells that the .profile is not being read

The ftp server admin has granted me an account for the purpose, but do not wish me to store the plain username or password in any script files for security reasons. How can I do that?

I have a heavily used file server that I want to restart, then if it requires e2fsck's on any volume to run them after it restarts. The only problem is that the server is rarely rebooted, and they said it might kernel panic because its been so long. I've heard there's a way to have it go past the kernel panic if it does happen, but I'm not sure how to do that or the other stuff.If it was a Windows server, I would schedule a shutdown with the force switch, and have the chkdsk's already scheduled for each volume on reboot. But for RHEL, I really don't know.I'm hoping this can be done, so that way I can have it kick off at say 7am, then when I get in at 8am it will probably be near the end of the e2fsck's so I can see what's going on.

touch `date "+%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M"`.txt
However, I'd like to define an alias for this. When I try adding to the bashrc this:
alias td="touch `date "+%Y-%m-%d_%H-%M"`.txt"
the result is that the filename is the same during the entire session, since the `date ..` gets calculated just once during login...
How can I get the command to expand only when I call the alias? Or must I use a function for this?
In my .bashrc file, I am attempting to set JAVA_PATH to a local path, using the HOME environment variable or '~' symbol as shown in the following examples.Using ${HOME}

When I attempt to use ${JAVA_HOME} in a my ${PATH} javec is not found. To debug it, I tried a simple ls command:
ls ${JAVA_HOME}
and get the following error:

Using '~': Trying to use '~' symbol as follows:
export JAVA_PATH='~/Software/java/jdk1.6.0_24'
the ls command results in the same error, however javac is found.I prefer the '~' symbol anyway, but would like to understand why the ls command does not work for either, and why it seems as though ${HOME} is not being expanded.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to assign the path of a sourced sub.bashrc file to an environment variable. E.g. if I type (or execute) from a known relative location
$ source ../../someDir/sub.bashrc
the sub.bashrc should set a variable like
export MyOwnLocation=/home/user1/unknownlocation/someDir
The problem is I can't use $0 as reference because the script is only sourced not executed. I also don't want to hardcode the path because the location might change and there will be more copies. Is there an easy way to create this information from within the the sourced bashrc file? I use Gnu bash 2.05b on Suse Linux 9.

The intentional for putting the file in .bashrc is to run the script automatically after login as root, I don know why is this happen.
