The kvm and qemu packages are integrated into a single package, but this doesn't mean qemu is integrated into the kernel now in any way does it? I should still install kqemu to the the performance improvements, right?

This may just be more idle curiosity than anything else since the server still works. . . but it's really bothering me because I can't explain it.
My (limited) understanding is that the devel files are just the source files and shouldn't actually affect peformance.
Yet, prior to installing httpd-devel (and its dependencies), /etc/init.d/httpd restart takes about 2 seconds total. After installing httpd-devel, the "stopping" phase of the httpd restart take 5-7 seconds (which seems really long when you're just sitting there waiting on it.
yum install httpd-devel also installs the following for dependencies:
db4-cxx
db4-devel
cyrus-sasl-devel
apr-devel
apr-util-devel
openldap-devel
expat-devel
All but one of those are devel files as well. And here's the real kicker: Uninstalling them through YUM doesn't put things back to normal (even after reboot).
I'm no linux expert. But I wouldn't think installing devel files would have this effect or any effect like this since they're just source code files (?). Can anyone explain what's happening or give me tips on how I can watch the apache process stop and see what's hanging it up?

View 1 Replies View Relatedcan't find a page that lists what improvements were made over 10.04lts bugs fixed, etc. My problem is scanner / print software 10.04 found my printer and prints fine. Unless there is a power outage. Then I have to manually enter in the sometimes new URL. Because 10.04 does NOT actively rescan for the printer.
But none of the software actuates the scanner. signal is sent to scan, but never actually scans and retrieves the image. Using a Epson NX515 scanner / printer all in one. Found a page on the web that supposedly has drivers etc for this, but not sure I should try to download and install. Tried all scan software listed in the Ubuntu software center none work.
I recently installed a new home backup server with Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 using the alternate CD. I used the CD's installer to partition my disk and created a software RAID 5 array on 4 disks with no spares. The root file system is located outside the raid array.
At first the array performed nicely but as it started to fill up, the io performance dropped significantly to the point where I get a transfer rate of 1-2MB/s when writing!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently experiencing some serious issues with WRITE performance on a RAID-1 array. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit server with the latest updates. To evaluate the performance ran the following test: [URL]... (great article btw!) Using dd to measure, write performance is only at 8.7 MB/s. Read is great though at 74.5 MB/s. The tests were ran straight after rebooting and I have not (YET!) done any kernel tuning or customization, running the default server package of the Ubuntu kernel. As you can see from the bo column there is definitely something stalling. As per top output, the %wa (waiting for i/o) is always around %75 however as per above, writes are stalling. CPU is basically idle all the time. Hard drives are quite new and smartctl (smartmontools) does not detect any faults.
I built my own file server based on the Intel Atom 525 and Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64):http:[url]....It has 2 2TB Western Digital Green drives connected via SATA.Internal file transfers (disk-to-disk) using Nautilus zip along at 80 Mb/sec. Over SAMBA, however, I'm getting 35 Mb/sec. Other than creating the shares, I haven't modified smb.conf.have a gigabit network. I've run atop on the receiving computer and it isn't being taxed. At 35 Mb/sec the file server is also not being taxed.
Should I be focusing on testing the onboard NIC (RealTek 8111E) in the file server or looking at SAMBA?
It is vital to get a useful server performance monitoring tool that prevents growth related performance issues. Moreover, it should offer long term capacity planning and trend analysis along with detecting performance issues and unwanted outages.

I choose to install on my newly created raid array, all in ext3 filesystem. The purpose of this fileserver is to have lots of files from the different departments on the company (all windows workstations except mine). Everyone has a private folder and a department folder, along with the common folder for all employees.did I made a mistake formating all to ext3? would I get a significant increase in performance if I resize the current ubuntu partiton and created a new NTFS new one and move the files to it?

I ran the test suite very often with all sorts of settings, but recently it happened once that my Ubuntu system froze. I could still ping the machine, but nothing else was responding any more, no screen output, no ssh login, not possible to switch consoles. After rebooting the system the system logs were quiet. No single trace of any problem.

A similar issue happened in March 2010 on one of our CentOS 5.4 systems where we run a heavy load Java application on, where we had to hard power off the machine and after the reboot there was no trace of the problem in the logs. On that server we used JDK 1.6.0_17 and did not use hugetlbfs.
My first question would be what to do so that next time something like that happens I have more information available after the incident to debug and analyse the problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt stores all my important stuff, as well as some music and movies.I use a second linux box in my living room to "stream" content via NFS or SAMBA share.The streaming tends to stop several times during playback, and needs to fill up its buffer again before continuing to play.I also have some Windows XP and 7 based computers that connect to this file server.I have noticed that directory listing is VERY slow, and there is a huge lag when I want to save/read a file from/to my home directory.

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

I have an 11.2 laptop and thought it was time to upgrade to 11.4. I downloaded the 11.4 X86-64 live cd and thought that I would check how it ran on my 11.3 desktop. This is a core i5 760 with an Nvidia GT240 graphics card and 4GB of DDR3 ram. The 11.4 live system shows the nouveau driver. The graphics performance is terrible. In particular windows are very very slow to resize and often don't resize properly. There are also some artifacts in some graphics. I eventually downloaded Flash which did seem to work moderately well, especially in full screen mode. The screen resolution is 1920x1080. I have never seen a windowing system work so slowly
While I always use the Nvidia proprietary driver, I don't know how I can test it via a live CD. The Nvidia driver in the repository is the 270 version and I think that I have seen reports of severe problems with the 270 version so that needs to be tested too. I always install the nvidia driver the really easy way via yast
Has anyone any idea why the KDE Live graphics are so slow? I will not go anywhere near 11.4 unless the graphics system is very much faster. Is there any way to test the nvidia proprietary graphics driver without installing 11.4?
I'm noticing that the performance for FreeNX Server under Fedora Core 14 is really bad. The screen refreshing is painfully slow. I'm thinking maybe the issue is related to the use of opengl in the X driver? how I can disable opengl entirely, so that the X server is only using 2d rendering?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter being forced to rebuild my computer (failed drive) I finally got current and installed F11 (was using F9). I was watching GKrellm last night and noticed something odd. The CPU frequency on my processor (Phenom 9600) was scaled to the slower speed and was rarely being pushed to full speed.
I verified that cpuspeed was in ondemand mode and ran some processor intense tasks (huge image loads, large file cats, large yum installs, etc...). Only when I was able to sustain near 100% load would the system throttle to the full clock speed. It would then drop back to the slower speed very quickly even though the process was still running. As a rough benchmark, I ran these tasks again in performance mode to see what impact this was having. Most of these tasks were taking as much as 40-50% longer to complete in ondemand mode.
Digging further, I found that the default up_threshold in F11 is set to 95%!! This is verified by cating /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold. This means that the system would not throttle to full speed unless a 95% load was sustained for multiple samples (36 miliseconds each by default).
I overrode these settings in /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed. I change up_threshold to 60 and down_threshold to 30. I am at work right now, so I can't benchmark this change until tonight. I guess I could have just set it to performance mode and left it, but I'd rather save the power when the machine is idle.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why 95% is the default and if there is any problem/benefit to changing this to a much lower value? It seems that anyone with a CPU running SpeedStep or CoolnQuiet would suffer the same severe performance impacts I saw with the default values.
I av just started out with fedora (fedora 15 64bit) and everything is dandy except i get less than an hour of battery life on my laptop. I used to get around 2 and half hours on ubuntu natty. could someone help me figure out whats going on?All hardware has been working well and i havent installed any proprietary drivers except the WLAN broadcom driver.

Compiz works fairly OK, but TuxRacer runs at 25 FPS, Glest runs just terribly slow and there is quite noticeable tearing in videos (MPlayer and Totem). Not to mention 400-600 FPS in glxgears.So far I have only tampered with Xorg (see below, changes marked red).

Recently I noticed there are on sale, from several manufacturers, some interesting and inexpensive laptops equipped with AMD's new Ontario C50 processor which for one thing seems to use little power (like the Atom), and the other and more interesting is the fact that it has the graphics embedded.
I am curious if someone here owns one of said laptops and can comment about the performance/compatibility of this Ontario chip, because some of these laptops are such good deals that I am seriously considering at least recommending them. Obviously if I purchase one of those I'd install Fedora on in. Two things puzzle me: is performance very far apart from that of a netbook, and second, how do the graphics perform? Do they use the Catalyst driver as well?
I have fedora 12 and since I started using firefox I noticed that it performs very slow. Slow when opening, when displaying information etc..I thought that there was something wrong with my wireless device but I installed opera and it works very fast. The strange thing is that before that I installed google chrome and also worked very slow for me.

I am running Fedora 12 and I need to get linphone up and running with a working registrar. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just did (another) fresh install of FC13. On the last install I attempted to install the nvidia proprietary drivers (tried every guide I could find). When I installed the proprietary drivers, I could no longer boot. It would hang at the end tri-color progress bar. I could ALT+F2 to get to tty2, and deleting the xorg.conf file and init 5 would get me back to the Gnome login. I continued trying other methods, getting such results as a black screen with no way to access tty. I tried using the rescue function from the DVD, but this time I couldn't fix the problem by deleting xorg.conf and executing init 5.
After failing in everything I tried for the proprietary driver, I decided I'd give the new nouveau a shot. Every time I fresh install FC13, the graphics performance is TERRIBLE. Moving a window around or scrolling in Firefox is painfully choppy and borders on unusable. I tried 'yum install mesa-dri-drivers-experimental' but after rebooting the performance was still beyond crappy.
I can get proprietary drivers working in Debian Lenny without breaking a sweat, but I prefer Fedora as a whole by far.
My computer is running really slow after a power outage. It was fine, then the power went out. Now it's *unabably* slow. The OS takes a long time to load, the simple calculator takes a few minutes to show up, Firefox doesn't even load at all before I give up. And it won't shut down normally. I have to use the power button.
So did the power outage fry somthing on my PC. Do I have ot replace RAM or the processor? Or is it a software issue? Do I have to do something as drastic as a reimage?
