Fedora Servers :: Clientcomps/employees To Use A Certain File On The Desktop To Take Peoples Orders?
Jul 23, 2009
Im not sure iam posting in the right place forgive me if i posted incorrectly. I have just setup my first ever Fedora computer/server. Ive got clients to log into it via network booting using LTSP. Im really pleased but I have a few questions I need to ask. As I want to use this for a for work i.e. Im setting up a small business.
1. I need my clientcomps/employees to use a certain file on the desktop, to take peoples orders, another file to search and another file to edit etc. Iam intending on using a php web file that will save info to a SQL database can this be done? and how?
If I save a web document when iam admin on the desktop, my other users dont see it.
2. I want to restrict certain websites during work hours like Facebook etc (haha i want them to have access in their breaks though).

I would like to ask if there's a program that can archive all emails from my employees to a certain server and can generate reports. specifically all types of emails incoming and outgoing. My employees are aware of my policy due to many confidential files within our office.

I am the System Admin for a BPO here in my Hometown. My network has systems in windows. Now I need to monitor what they are doing from my system. Is there any s/w available for that? I searched in Internet and found this: LAN Employee Monitor [URL] but its a windows S/W. Any suggestions or equivalents in Linux? Specifically for Debian 5.0?

I have an script called conection located in /etc/ppp ( /etc/ppp/conection)The content of the scrips is:
pppd call isp Running it by hand, it dials out to my ISP and fetch all my email from different accounts and turn-off the link. It works great. I decided to automate the process using the cron.
The problem is when cron execute it at the specified time, nothing happens. It doesn't even dials out. I checked /var/log/cron and cron says It was executed. But it doesn't. I try again running the script by hand and works fine.

I am going through the motions of migrating from Rhythmbox to Banshee so that I can field questions about the process as Banshee takes over for Rhythmbox in Ubuntu. I have solved a silly issue about importing playlists (they must be imported from /home/username/ or you must alter the paths in each entry). But there is another issue which I am at a loss to explain.
My playlists are like mixed tapes. They are in a specific order. When I import a playlist into Banshee that order is not preserved. I have checked the files and they are definitely ordered and numbered in the playlists just as they are in Rhythmbox, but Banshee refuses to import them with the order respected regardless of the smallness of the list.
What's going on and how can I correct this?
I'd rather not have to reconstruct all of these playlists.

I just want to confirm something before I mess with the bootloader. It kind of scares me to rewrite my MBR. It appears that the grub version that comes with Ubuntu 10.10 drives its menu generation from /etc/grub.d/* when you execute update-grub. If I want to put windows first in the list, could I just rename "30_os-prober" to something like "09_os-prober" and run update-grub? My reason for this is every time Ubuntu updates the kernel, it adds 2 new entries to grub's boot menu. It's easy enough to remove these via the Synaptic Package Manager, but that means for at least 1 boot cycle, my default OS gets messed up (Windows). I have to leave it as the default for others that use the computer, even though I prefer Ubuntu.

I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it

I turned my home PC running Ubuntu 10.04 into a server, and so i am so lost, after reading like a 10-20 different guides and/or official docs, I am totally lost.
All I wanted was to create a custom 404 error page...i read about how people edited .htaccess files to customize error pages, i tried and failed also, editing apache2.conf, I got lost and i dont wanna mess up everything and also, how you're supposed to not touch either of those as its not how it should be done and instead you need to edit httpd.conf and i did and FAILED! again...
Also how do I make it so that I can make subdomain(s) on my site? and wth is a name server and where do I get one?

New install of FC12 and after logging into the KDE desktop then going back to Gnome, the Desktop Config File for KDE shows on the Gnome desktop. I ran gconf-editor and I can see the file but no option to not display in Nautilus. Is there an easy way to not display the file on the Gnome desktop without messing up the KDE config file?

Edited 5/14/2009, No-Replies have read everything I can find trying to resolve problem. Continued at * so order may be followed.Fairly new to Fedora, I had reset my Monitor setting from the Graphical Interface on the Desktop, (got an out of range error) Was able to SSH in and reset Xorg to correct values, however now the server does not boot to the Graphical Desktop, just has a spinning blue circle on black background. The server has booted and I can get in with SSH, all functions of the server appear to be working correctly, i.e.web, mail, ftp, etc. However it never goes to the Graphical login page as before.*Fedora 8..the perfect server + ISPconfig. I have a ubuntu server 10.04 with LAMP installed. I also have ubuntu 10.10 on a laptop and can copy files to the server fine. To keep my website uptodate, I usually use Filezilla without any problems. I have just installed Fedora 14 on an old desktop and set up "my stall" ok. The problem is that I cannot copy any files from Ferdoa to the server due to:-
Response: 550 Permission denied.
Error: Critical file transfer error
I have tried to change the directory on the server "/var/www" using chmod -R 775* and chmod -R 777*, but it makes no difference, the file transfer still fails.

I installed Fedora 12 yesterday. After installation, I added some packages like gstreamer*, amarok, vlc etc.
Once I rebooted, all desktop icons became invisible and I'm unable to open file browser and browse files/folders.
When I log out, I get this message saying "File Manager not responding!"
I initially thought I messed up with settings, and created a new account. Still no use.
BTW, I use Gnome Desktop Environment.
I went further and installed Fedora 12 again. And did the same package installation. And after reboot, no desktop items is visible and can't browse files/folders using file browser (nautilus).

was originally looking to setup some kind of NAS in my house due to the fact that me and my wife both access the same music libraby, photo library etc. and was looking at one of the IcyBox enclosures.I realised that whilst this was a quick and possibly easy way to set something up, it wasn't in keeping with the true geek within so decided to look into setting up a full RAID5 file server. This would then allow me to install and setup various other services such as Web and FTP server, Mail server and DNS server should I ever want to.
I have an old machine (Duron 1GHz I think) with 1GB ram but the only problem is that is doesn't have an on board SATA controller so I was wondering what PCI SATA controller cards work with Fedora? Doesn't need to have RAID capabilities since i'll be using Software RAID anyway, just need a nice cheap Fedora friendly controller card that'll do the job.

I have a web server set up, and for a while I just let it show the default "test" page, but now I am wanting to actually show something of my own.
I downloaded a couple templates from the internet (free ones), and copied the first one to the /var/www/html folder (including subfolders for ./images and such), and it used an index.php file, but when viewing in my browser, it showed the actual text of the file, not the graphics and images and stuff.
So I deleted those files and "installed" the second template, which uses an index.html file instead.
I am once again getting the default "Apache is running but not configured" page again, even though I have verified multiple times that the index.html file is located in /var/www/html
if I include the index.html file in the path to my website, I get a 403 Forbidden, so I'm thinking it has to do with file ownership or permissions.
I placed the files there as "root", and have tried several combinations of possible permissions (root:root is the owner:group) without any luck.

1. Is it possible to instead of using the Desktop Folder plasmoid, have a usual Desktop act as a file manager?
2. What is Akondi? There are tons of processes which have Akonadi in their name, and it seems to be using up lots of memory. Can I disable these somehow, or is it safe to do so?
3. Any general tips on how to reduce the amount ram that is used on startup? I am using somewhere around 750MB on startup, which is about double the amount Gnome uses. After a few hours of use, Xorg uses close to 1GB of memory.
4. Whenever I get a notification, they don't delete themselves, so when I click on the (i), I see tons of notifications. Is there a way to get them to delete themselves after they have been shown?

After booting I noticed that sometimes nmb was not running. The command # service nmb status gives nmbd dead but pid file exists The timestamp of the pid file suggests that at the last shutdown the pid file was not removed, and I guess this prevented nmb to start properly during booting (Although during booting the messages is [OK]).
If I shut down nmb manually, everything is fine. I checked the log in /var/log/samba/log.nmbd and it doesn't show any error. As mentioned, this occurs only occasionally, and I have no idea what may be causing this.

Platform information:
Fedora 11
HP a1250n PC w/3Gb RAM and 2Ghz (?) CPU
PHP v5 and Apache 2.2
The situation I've got is that my PHP and Apache installs do not recognize files with the .php5 file extension. I can successfully open .php files in my browser just as I have designed them. However, when I try to open a .php5 file in my browser, it simply outputs the code and not the web page (as it should). I've pasted (what I believe to be) the relevant parts of the output from phpinfo() command below. Any help correcting this is greatly appreciated as I have searched the forums and the Internet fairly exhaustively with various different keywords and still have come up empty. I think if I could figure out how to add ".php5" to the list of "Registered PHP Streams" then I would be all set, but I can't figure that out. I also tried copying /etc/php.ini to /etc/php.d/ and re-naming it php5.ini, but this did not work.

My installation went fine. Apache, PHP, and MYSQL all work independently. My trouble getting PHP to serve MySQL content. The first thing I did was look in the PHP.INI file to check that it was set up correctly. Then I discovered my install of PHP does not have the expected directives, namely extension_dir or any DLL comments where I can enable MYSQL. Instead my config file has a PHP.D directory. In that directory there are no files for MYSQL. I look at the PHP.net site and I can't find any info on how to write this file. And there's the issue of the missing extension_dir directive.
As I said, I visited the PHP.net site and could not find any specific manual pages explaining this change to PHP 5.2.11. I downloaded "the latest php.ini" development file from the site. As near as I can tell its for PHP 6.0.0 and it does have the extension_dir directive, and it still uses the DLLs in Dynamic Extensions section. (EDITED= The introduction of the PHP.INI file doesn't give a version number, however later under error handling there is a note: "as of PHP 6.0.0"). Why I can't find more information about this on any forum or at PHP.net?

I have a computer running Fedora 11. I wanted to use samba in my office. So I configured the /etc/samba/smb.conf ,but it did not work well : Windows can find samba, but when I tap in username and password, samba request them again , and the same thing continues in a loop. So I copied another computer's smb.conf (which is also a Fedora 11,samba runs well in this one).I copied this file to /etc/samba/ ,then samba can't satart up . I read from /var/log/samba/log.smbd.log : Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf": Permission denied Even if I use: chmod 777 /etc/samba/smb.conf
why I can't login samba from Windows:

workgroup = MYGROUP
server string = Samba Server Version %v

Allow me to access local copy of site that's on computer (located : /var/www/developmentsitename/) using www.development.loc in browser./and2a. What do I edit to create the server accessible by other computers connected to same wifi connection. 2b. If another computer can connect to this site now, can we create a virtual desktop setting in which workers can work as if they have their own partition on the server to work on and upload work onto the development server.

I have my home network up and running. I can access my index file by the ip I gave to eth0 - 192.168.0.2
I put this same ip into etc/hosts:
192.168.0.2 localhost localhost.localdomain
One space separates the hostnames from the ip in /etc/hosts.
The hostname command returns: localhost.localdomain
I have /etc/resolv.conf configured the right way, so I can use my isp's DNS servers. I know this because yum works and I can ping anywhere by url. The next step is to learn to access the index file by url locally on my own network.

I just installed FC10 and then used yumex to install the vsftpd FTP daemon package. I'm using the vsftpd.conf file that came with the distribution, and its almost identical to one I copied from my FC2 machine's working set-up. When I try to FTP in as a known system user I'm presented with my home directory /home/myusername/. The directory appears empty to the FTP program, but isn't in reality. I can't upload a file to the empty home directory. I can move up the directory hierarchy to /home/, but again that appears as an empty directory.
I don't think it's a vsftpd.conf file issue. I've tried everything I can there. Could it have something to do with permissions? I fiddled with those, but couldn't make an FTP directory listing work.
