I've just installed FC12 on my nettop and I've notice that when I go to "system -> network" the hostname is "Fedora001". When I ping its IP I get "new-host.home". What did I do or didn't do? How do I correct this? Do I need to change it in the "hostname" file?Also, can I leave "domain" field blank?
View 14 RepliesAn unsuccessful login via a tty by a known user and an unknown user will generate an almost exact line in /var/log/secure with the exception of the last field. To see this specifically do Ctrl-Alt-F2, for example. Now login with a known user and log out. Next attempt a login with a bogus user name which fails. Go back to your GUI enviroment (Ctrl-Alt-F7) and then tail /var/log/secure. For the known user the last field will be "user=some_name_here. The unknown user will not have a "user=" field.
How do I capture the two via different variables in bash?
For example: KNOWN_USER=`syntax that finds the user= field.` echo There is a user= field and the user is mmouse.
UNKNOWN_USER=`syntax that does NOT find the user= field` echo There is NO user= field and an unknown user tried to login.
If been exploring using sed to grab (or not grab) that last field, but haven't hit upon the right syntax yet.
The video projector I have to use this week projects an image too large for its screen and spills over on every side.
Fixing the physical setup is not possible or at least unlikely for the moment: the only solution is to carefully resize and position windows so that they display in the visible part of the screen - using full-screen mode is out.
Is there a way around this via software, using xrandr for example?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAt the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.
Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.
So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.
I've had a very colorful morning learning the innerparts of Linux's sort command, and have come across yet another issue that I can't seem to find an answer for in the documentation. I'm currently using -t, to indicate that my fields are split by the comma character, but I'm finding that in some of my files, the comma is used (between double-quotes) within values:

How can I use a comma to terminate my fields, but ignore the occurences of it within values? Is this fairly simple, or do I need to re-export all of my data using a more-foreign field-terminator? (Unfortunately, I do not have any control over declaring a different terminator with this particular project).

Am I supposed to parse something and call it back another way?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I first started using Fedora 10 I had a bit of a play with the "Leave Message" button that appears when you lock the screen. After you type the message and click save, the next time the user logged in the messages would pop up.
Ever since Fedora 12, when I leave a test message, after I log in nothing pops up. This happens on two different computers so I don't think its an obscure hardware problem.
After the completely new installation of Fedora 15 the letters are ugly in comparison with FC 14, no matter which font. It doesn't help to set anti-aliasing manually. The edges of the letters leave blurring.

Is there any way to block "asdfg" without blocking the entire domain (www.qwerty.com)? I already tried editing my hosts file, but apparently that only works for whole domains.Also, while we're at it, can the hosts file be used to actually block IP addresses, or just domain names (so if I wanted qwerty.com with IP of 128.127.126.125 to be completely blocked, but know my family or employees are little smarter than that, I could add the line "0.0.0.0 128.127.126.125" to prevent all access to that website)?

I can access my server and webpage:
internally using http://192.168.0.192
externally using http://MYDNS___EXAMPLE.com
but I cannot access the server internally using http://MYDNS___EXAMPLE.com

I have installed ubuntu netbook addition and all is good, but when I try to connect to internet I get comcast(my service provider) site. Which means I am connecting to outside world just need to know what to enter in Search Domains field.
All my pc's/laptops at home have 2 DNS names entered for ipvr4 listed in the field but no Search Domains field value specified and it works great off of wireless router.
Well here when I go to IPvr4 tab it seems like I am required to enter value in search domains field. The question is what do I enter there COMCAST domain? Like this one: hsd1.il.comcast.net?
I want to use single label host names on my local LAN, without using any domain (at least no registered one). My machines should be named in a fashion similar to 'myserver', 'mydesktop' etc. so that i from a browser on any LAN machine may write 'http://myserver', and get the webserver on 'myserver' (so NO domain part, e.g. myserver.domain).
