Fedora :: LVM For BAPCKUPPC - Create A Link To The New Location And What To Mount

Aug 26, 2011

I have read that it is best to have a volume LVM set up to contain the BackupPC data that it generates when backing a machine(s) up. By default BackupPC stores the back up data in /var/lib/BackupPC and there is information on how to create a link to the new location and what to mount on the new dedicated LVM What I do not know is how to create a new LVM for the BackupPC files/data on the machine I have. Currently I have a machine running fedora 15 64 bit. It has BackupPC installed via yum but I have not run it as yet. I believe that I have the necessary dependencies installed The machine has two hard drives, one a 80 GB and the other a 500 GB. Currently Gparted is showing;

/dev/sdb1 ext4 /Boot 500MiB
/dev/sdb2 Lvm2 74.04 GiB (in properties it says it is not mounted)
/dev/sdb1 Lvm2 465.76 GiB (in properties it says it is not mounted)

When the machine was loaded with Fedora it was set up as 1 partition and was just a standard out of the box Fedora install accepting the defaults. how do i go about setting up a LVM that I can expand later if necessary to hold the BackupPC data? I saw in one post some where that person call the group Main. how to" or provide a set by set guide as to how to achieve this. Or provide advise o the best way to set the machine up. I do not intend to run anything else on the machine. It is there to back up a server (Fedora 14), A general use machine machine (Fedora 15) and a windows machine (XP).

Ubuntu :: OpenMotif : Create Network Location Link As Local Filesystem Location?

Apr 26, 2011

I'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

Software :: Create A Symbolic Link That Points To An Ftp Location?

Jul 1, 2011

I have a large collection of files on a computer (tallgrass) and tallgrass is running an ftp server, which I have the username and password to. There is about 600 GB of files on tallgrass that I need access to, but I don't have a big enough hard drive. I need these data files to run a cpu-intensive calculation, and my CPU is significantly better than tallgrass' cpu, which is why I want to do it on my computer. (Tallgrass also doesn't have enough RAM.) What I would like to do is create a "symbolic link" on my hard drive that will point to the directory containing the data on tallgrass. Read-only is perfectly OK. This way I could read from mylink/data0001.dat and it would read from the file data0001.dat over ftp from tallgrass. I shouldn't have any speed issues because tallgrass is on my 1 Gbps LAN. Is there a way I can do this?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount To Vista Needed For Apache - Symbolic Link Not Allowed Or Link Target Not Accessible

Apr 26, 2010

I have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf

[Code]....

The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.

log from apache: [Mon Apr 26 20:39:42 2010] [error] [client 99.99.99.99] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user1/pub_html/Music, referer: https://xx.xx.xx/~user1/music.html

The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.

Fedora Networking :: Accessing Windows Shares - Unable To Mount Location

Jan 15, 2009

We are using spare parts (Socket 775 Biostar motherboard, OCZ 500wat PSU) to build a computer that will just be another system in the house. I want this system to be running Folding@Home, and the F@H SMP client for Linux is much less of a headache than its Windows couterpart, so I would like this computer to run Fedora. My dad loves networking, and knows how to do it in XP / Vista, so he has always opposed my frequent use of Linux. There are ways of accessing Windows shared folders from Linux, but that I haven't figured it out yet. I want to access Windows shared folders from my Fedora 10. I don't know how to go about doing this, can anyone point me in the right direction? Do I have to install anything special? I can go to Places, and then Network (in Gnome) and I see "Windows Network", but when I click it, I get "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server"

I know that perhaps I should have set up virtual hosts, but I wasn't aware of them at the time and the change over can not be accommodated at the moment (the change control wouldn't be agreed). I was wondering if it could be done using environment variables.

At the moment I use:
Code:
tail -f /var/log/httpd/error_log | grep "/test/"
but this does miss out some messages, particularly multiple line SOAP messages.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Share : Get An Error Message "unable To Mount Location, Failed To Mount Windows Share"?

Jan 22, 2011

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals. This is what I got

Firewall off (utf disabled)

Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)

External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)

I have two shares

1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.

2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount Location?

I open the Places menu, select network, choose the machine and get a set of shared folders. But when I try to open this one I get an error message "Unable to mount location. Failed to mount Windows Share". All the machines are running Ubuntu 9.04 or better. No problem with any other shared folder, and the permissions are the same for all.

I worked around it by creating another folder, copying everything across, and sharing it with the usual perfect result.

Ubuntu Networking :: Not Able To Mount Location - Fix It?

Jul 30, 2011

I am having problems sharing my external hard drive.

It is plugged into my Ubuntu LTS media centre computer and is just a standard USB Seagate HDD. It works fine when I access it from the same computer it is plugged into, both in Ubuntu and Windows machines.

I have set it up as a shared resource using the shares-admin app and at the same time, shared the home folder of that machine. I can access the home folder fine from my laptop over the network but when I try to access the external HDD, I get the following error msg: 'Unable to mount location - failed to mount Windows share'.

My laptop has the same OS as the media centre - Ubuntu LTS 10.04 Lucid. I am trying to access the share via Places > Network. I'm not sure why it comes under Windows shares because neither machine has Windows on. The network is a Wi-fi home network.

More specifically the slice provided by a commercial web hosting provider. I can ssh and sftp just fine keying in the password manually but since I'm unable to create a .ssh directory in my "root" I'm unsuccessful in scripting logins. What I'm wondering is if the .ssh directory and associated security files can be placed in an alternate location such as the httpdocs directory and pass that location to ssh in a command line parameter.
