Fedora Installation :: Upgrading From 11 To 12?

Dec 1, 2009

I had fedora 10 a while back, and when fedora 11 came out a few days later my PC prompted me to upgrade.. all from desktop.. clicked one button and that was it, 10 minutes later it was upgraded... perfect.

This time, I'm sat on fedora 11 looking at the timeline for the 12 release, it gets released and i'm still waiting for 11 to tell me i can upgrade... I know I can upgrade manually, but im quite interested as to why it hasnt asked me automatically this time.

Maybe something in my config is stopping it?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading From PHP 5.1.6 To PHP 5.2?

Jan 29, 2009

I'm trying to upgrade PHP on my Fedora Core 6 web server. I currently have 5.1.6, all I need is verson 5.2 or higher, it is a requirement of some software I want to install. I am not really a server admin or very Linux savvy, I've been able to get around doing what I need to use this a web development server, but trying to do this is beyond me. I tried updating using yum, but I guess the latest version in the Fedora Core 6 repositories are 5.16. I've never really dealt with installing binaries, so I am stumped as to how to get this done.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To Kernel 2.6.28.2 In 10?

Jan 26, 2009

I've never compiled a kernel before and I'm in need of the 2.6.28 kernel (two words: macbook aluminium).

I guess my biggest question is, will this guide work well for F10? I would hate to get half-way through it just to find out that F10 does something different than F08 or F09. Is there anything that you experts can see right away that would possibly be disastrous? If things do come to worse, I can simply select the previous kernel at GRUB boot right?

Or will the Fedora team be releasing the update soon through the package manager? Is there a way I can activate the development version and only get the kernel update?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading From 7 To 12 Via DVD Medium

Mar 25, 2010

I am planning on doing an upgrade on one of our systems from Fedora Core 7 to the Fedora Core 12 distribution. I have read Bruce Byfield's article "Upgrading to the newest Fedora release", and the approach that I am planning on taking is the upgrading via the DVD medium.

Quote: Please don't even bother trying this... each upgrade between fedora versions has it's risks, I'd give you a 4% chance of success between these two versions. And if you upgrade, you'll not end up with FC12, you'll end up with a horribley messy mish mash of a distribution that just happens to mostly contain FC12 rpms. Do yourself a proper favour and save important data and configs, and reinstall. and then keep it up to date properly. Another quote was as follows:

Quote: Glennzo posted a thread in [URL] about upgrading which surfaced in a recent thread. If it's a production system I'd strongly suggest copying the setup to a test slash staging server to see if cleanly installing and modifying F12 versus upgrading to 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 is more efficient slash less error-prone. I am inclined to try doing the upgrade on a test server to see if it works. Should I even bother with that approach or just proceed with the scratch install?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading The Fc12 To F13?

May 13, 2010

I'd like to reproduce the way I got to f12 from f11, but obviously to f13 basically I started out on the f11 rawhide repos, then as f12 got released a yum update updated my fedora-release and then hey presto I was automatically upgraded to f12 final release if I now turn on my rawhide repos, as f13 is nearing completion, will I be updated to the latest f13 release (RC3 I believe) and then as f13 gets released my fedora-release will be updated and i will then be upgraded to f13 final as happened before?I don't want to download a whole dvd iso and then upgrade when f13 is final, I'd like to do a gradual transition ie..

f12 -> f13 RC3 via rawhide
f13 RC3 -> f13 Final via yum update

Fedora Installation :: Error While Upgrading From F11 To F13?

Aug 20, 2010

I want to upgrade my 32bit Fedora from 11 to 13 version. I tried both options: via preupgrade tool and via installation media (DVD). Both options failed with following Anaconda error at the beginning of installation process:

RpmUtilsError: RPM Error opening Package

In my case, the problem was in package:

/mnt/sysimage/var/cache/yum/anaconda-InstallationRepo-xxx.i386/packages/fontpackages-filesystem-1.44-1.fc13.noarch.rpm.

I switched to terminal, and discovered that size of this file is 0.

I downloaded installation DVD from official torrent, so checksum was autmatically checked. Verification test at the beginnig of installation was also successfully passed. So media is OK. Moreover, I also tried to upgrade via preupgrade tool with the same results.

I found similar bug with unclear status in Fedora Bug Tracking system for Anaconda in F12: [URL]

Fedora Installation :: Cannot Login To X After Upgrading To F14?

I can't seem to login to X after I've upgraded from F13 to F14 (x86_64 KDE Spin). I retained my /home partition with my user account etc.

The system fails when I try to login to the account I had on F13, but if I create a new user account I can login to X.

I did have the nvidia proprietary graphics drivers installed... how to track down an X issue like this relating to logging in to a system via the GUI?

However, when checking for software updates, the latest release of KDE is always stuck at 4.2.2. Is there a way or a repo that I need give me something more up to date?

Is it because F11 is in freeze that there's been no update to KDE? Currently, the latest stable release of KDE is 4.2.4.

Just finished upgrading using the upgrading DVD. Fedora boots and runs fine, when update manager is accessed it says 338 updates available. When updating is attempted there is one unavailable package after another. Have attempted to break the updates down into manageable sections to no avail. There is no repository manager (that can be located). Where to from here?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading F13 To F14 - Error 15: File Not Found

After preupgrading without problems, I did not reboot the computer inmediatly. I was surprised that, although preupgrade had finished, the terminal window was yet active and I closed it. On reboot, in the Grub window, one of the options is "Actualizar a (upgrade to) Fedora 14". If I select it I get: "Booting 'Actualizar a Fedora 14 (Laughlin)'

and pressing a key it returns to the Grub window. The /upgrade directory doesn't exist, but it does the /boot/upgrade where the vmlinuz is. uninstall and reinstall the preupgrade, rebooting inmediatly, but I don't know how to uninstall and if this is the solution. How can I uninstall the preupgrade?

Fedora Installation :: 'Upgrade' Filesystem Ext3 To Ext4 While Upgrading ?

Is that possible, I mean when I upgrade F10 to F11 with yum upgrade is there a way to 'upgrade' the filesystem to ext4 for example (with the exception of boot partition)? Or I have to reinstall fedora like new?

While changing the filesystem can I do it by parts? what I mean is for example: I have 2 partitions like '/' and '/home' with ext3, so I backup data in '/home', change '/' to ext4 then mv files from '/home' to '/' and change '/home' to ext4 and finally mv those files from '/' to '/home'. Is that possible?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To FC12 Due To Conflicts And Dependency Errors

Feb 17, 2010

I've been trying to upgrade my installation for some time now and just can't quite get it right. I would upgrade from the DVD but the installer hangs when it says "Looking for installation images on CD device /dev/sr0". However, that's not really my question. I've resorted to the upgrade instructions as found at [URL]. If I don't use the '--skip-broken' option it complains about the following:

abrt-gui-0.0.11-1.fc12.x86_64 from fedora
abrt-libs-1.0.6-1.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-client-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-common-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-winbind-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates
samba-winbind-clients-3.4.5-55.fc12.x86_64 from updates

If I use the skip broken option, it then complains about:
Transaction Check Error:
file /usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/cryptsetup.mo from install of cryptsetup-luks-1.1.0-0.4.fc12.x86_64 conflicts with file from package cryptsetup-luks-1.0.6-7.fc11.i586
file /usr/share/locale/sv/LC_MESSAGES/cryptsetup.mo from install of cryptsetup-luks-1.1.0-0.4.fc12.x86_64 conflicts with file from package cryptsetup-luks-1.0.6-7.fc11.i586

I can't seem to remedy this problem. There were other conflicts but I just removed those packages. When I attempt to remove 'cryptsetup-luks' it then tells me it's going to remove something like 200 others which did not sound like a good idea.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To FC12 - Access Port 631 Through Firefox Wouldn't Open

Feb 8, 2010

I only began using Linux with the release of FC8. I've upgraded into every new version (upgrade, no clean installs), after the new versions had been out a while. I struggle with command lines, updates, cups and other very cool tools that are only difficult because they have so many options. I'm Windows guy at work, a system admin and db administrator, plus the company expert on Excel. But, all in all, I hate Windows, and I'm loving Fedora, even if I struggle.

This last upgrade really kicked me in the pants. The first thing I noticed was all of my software sources were gone. I did some research around the forum and tried a few things, but it's still not working. Unfortunately, I may have uninstalled Yum in the process, but not rpm. I've tried to re-install the yum packages, but still no luck.

This morning before leaving for work I noticed that a boot log indicated that cups had failed. I went in to restart the service (through gui) and it said it was running. So I stopped the service and re-started. I tried to access port 631 through Firefox and it wouldn't open. I need to check the firewall to see if it's an open port, but beyond that I don't know.

Now I'm wondering if I should just do a clean install. I haven't done this, mainly because I didn't want to hassle with setting up my printer again (although, it's a Brother and they have the drivers and good instructions), and I didn't want to lose any emails that I've received via Thunderbird. The printer is really a non-issue now, as I'll have to set it up anyway. I have a backup of the /usr folder and all the documents. Question is, if I restore the Thunderbird folder after a clean install, would it bring back my email?
