Ubuntu :: Grsync - Filtering File Types / Getting Only Some File Types Getting Included And Not Others?

Sep 1, 2011

I'm using Grsync and I want to be able to plug in any drive into my laptop and run rsync on it to back up all the user documents on there to another external hdd and to exclude everything else. Working on the principle that user documents don't always appear where we'd expect I want rsync to look through the whole drive and filter what it backs up by file type. I am only having partial success, however.

I am using the 'filter' option in the 'additional options' box. I am using the command
Code:
filter='merge /home/tim/Desktop/filter'
and I am attaching the filter file I have written. (I have added the .txt extention to upload it).

I have tested this script on my home folder and here's what's going wrong. Rsync will copy the entire directory structure regardless of whether there are any files to be copied over in those directories. I am also getting only some file types getting included and not others. .odt and .ods files are copied, for instance, but not .doc or .rtf.

Software :: Gnome With Associated Applications For Registered File Types / Cant See Apps From "open With" Menu When Right Click To A File?

Oct 6, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome 2.30.

I remove the applications which i don't use from main-menu. Now i can not see them from "open with" menu when i right click to a file.

Also it will be very nice if Ubuntu can show me on the "open with" menu the possibilities of applications which can open properly the file type which i want to open. I try to configure with ubuntu-tweak's "file type manager" but it is not possible to configure all of file types. I think Ubuntu's applications must to know which applications has to show for which file types. And i don't know how to do that. I need an application like this : url

I get a new user from the same OS, and i see that the same problem still there... For example many many compressed files, audio or graphic files are not associated with vlc or gimp.

I try to configure from system files of gnome but it is very complicated.

So far I only found tips to install single icons or to add icon packs. :S

and is there any way to when you install an application make it default for such file types ?

Fedora :: Changing Associated Applications To File Types?

Apr 17, 2009

What file where holds the information for file opening application preferences?

I have Fedora Core 10 (2.6.27.5) with openoffice 3.0 installed.All of the OpenOffice programs show in Applications>Office drop down window and work fine.

Problem is this: If I double click on a calc spreadsheet file (.ods) then the archive manager wants to open it, and I have to right click and manually select scalc as the program to use. If I double click on an odt text file (.odt), okular opens it. I have to right click and select swriter.

If -- BTW -- I click on an excel (.xls) file, calc will start and open the file.

I would like to change these file application preferences, but can't find where to do it or what file to edit to break the current preferences.

Ubuntu :: Files Of Various Types Not Assigned To Open With Proper Application

Feb 8, 2010

I'm having some really odd problems with Nautilus. The main one is that most of the time, files of various types are not assigned to be opened with the proper app, and I cannot assign an app. I described this problem in another thread: If I right click a .pdf for example, and select "Open With," the first two suggestions (Leafpad and gedit) are wrong. If I choose instead "Open with another program," I get a dialog with two tabs. One is "Recommended Applications" and is blank. The other is "All Applications." If I click "All Applications," instead of getting a list of apps or having the opportunity to choose one from /usr/bin, the entire dialog disappears abruptly. I'd say that's a "crash."

I would like port 80 to have a small daemon running on it that detects HTTP traffic and sends a small redirect response, and any other traffic begins streaming data from my VPN daemon. I was wondering if this has already been made, or any kind of technology for detecting types of traffic and allowing you to run multiple types of servers on the same port.

Programming :: Conflicting Type Declarations Between Sys/types.h And Linux/types.h

Sep 12, 2010

I'm trying to use "netlink" to get ip address of a Linux box. But the linux/types.h included from "linux/rtnetlink.h" introduced many conflicting type declarations with "sys/types.h".

#include <rtnetlink.h>
#include <sys/types.h>
#include <sys/socket.h>
int main (int argc, char *argv[])
{
return 0;
}

The program will demonstrate such type conflicts.

General :: Copy Certain File Types Recursively While Maintaining File Structure On Destination?

Jun 14, 2011

I have just been bothered by a fairly small issue for some time now. I am trying to search (using find -name) for some .jpg files recursively. This is a Redhat environment with bash.

I get this job done though I need to copy ALL of them and put them in a separate folder BUT I also need to keep the order intact after copying.

For e.g - If I get a JPG file under /home/usr/new/1/ then the destination also needs to be /test/old/new/1/.

At the moment, I am simply putting all files under /test/old/ and I can't somehow get the later /new/1/ folder path created under /test/old/

I understand this could well be done using while OR if else loop, though if someone can just guide me with a hint, I would be really grateful.

I will complete the rest of the steps and was asking here since I am still not comfortable with the shell/bash scripts yet and planning to be really good at it over the next couple of months.

Ubuntu :: Associate A File-types With A Program?

May 7, 2010

I want to make vlc the default application for opening avi files.

I tried 'open with a different application', selected vlc and checked the box 'Remember this application for "AVI video" files' (see attached), but the next time I double-click on an avi file it loads in Movie Player.

I've searched the Ubuntu documentation for "file associations" and "default programs" with no success. I'm probably using the wrong search terms, but somewhere, in all the configuration files and tables, there must be a way to assign a particular program to a given file-type.

(If you're wondering why I want to use vlc, it's because, after hours of research and tinkering, I finally got it to respond to my mceusb remote via lirc.)

Ubuntu :: RDP Extensions And Plain Text File Types

Jul 15, 2010

Basically, I have a selection of .rdp shortcuts to various machines, but they are considered the file type "plain text document (text/plain)" so if I change it to open with to tsclient, all of that file type opens with tsclient. And if I change it to gedit, all the rdp files open with gedit. Is there a way to create a custom file type dependent on the extension rdp, or is there a way to set tsclient to open by extension rather than filetype?

Ubuntu :: Unknown File Types In /home Folder?

May 13, 2011

I've recently upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (a bit late, I know), but have been getting repeated messages telling me that the filesystem is running low on space.

I've run apt-get autoremove and autoclean, but there is still insufficient space for me to upgrade to 11.04.

Whilst looking through the /home folders, I came across a number of 2 character titles folders in the /home/user directory. These have the extension.file. Does anyone know what they are, and can I delete them?

Ubuntu :: Edit Mime Types To Remove A File Type Association?

Oct 30, 2010

I installed a trial copy of Anquet Map V06 under Wine then decided to remove it. Afterwards I could find many remnants associated with the Anquet program which I've deleted. Except what remains is an association between my .gpx files with Anquet and that includes and any new gpx file I download. My interpretation is that during the install process an association has been created with the gpx file type and the Anquet map program. This is what I want to stop. If I download a .gpx file and look at it's properties I see- Type: GPX File -Anquet Mapsv06 (application/x-wine-extension-gpx) I found this file and it's contents-

/.local/share/mime/application/x-wine-extension-gpx.xml
<mime-type type="application/x-wine-extension-gpx">

<!--

[code]....

Running "sudo update-mime-database /usr/share/mime" and rebooting didn't remove the association. How can I stop the Anquet name making as association with my gpx files?

Ubuntu :: Running Executable Text Files And Permissions And File Types

Nov 10, 2010

I checked the 'Run executable text files when they are opened' option in Nautilus preferences. I have noticed that files such as .sh and .bin launch by simply clicking on then (which is great). However I have also noticed that an ordinary .txt and .html file must not be marked as executable in order to launch it in Gedit and Firefox respectively via clicking. Otherwise you must right click and open with every time. What file types need to have execute permissions? What file types never need to have execute permissions?

General :: Convert A Large Number Of File Types From None Standard To Text?

Sep 28, 2009

I have on my windows machine several hundred files that are a format of .nc .ncs for a CNC machine. I need to convert them to txt which is something as easy as opening in notepad and then saving as .txt but there are so many that this kind of action would take way too long.

The reason I am writing the linuxquestions is because I would feel more comfortable in loading a live CD and using some sort of terminal command to do this than I would to download one of the many "freeware" type programs I have found for windows (even more so since I have had a root kit before and had to start all the way over to get rid of it).

I need to know:

1. Is this possible to do with the terminal without super advanced knowledge.

2. Can one please point me in the right direction; something to read or an example

Ubuntu :: Searching WITHIN Doc - Xls - Ppt Files - Grep Is Unable To Locate Text INSIDE File Types

Sep 1, 2011

I am on Ubuntu 11.04 and using Libre Office 3.3.2 to compose new documents and am saving them using .doc, .ppt and .xls files. (due to having to share them with others who are on Windows systems)

I have a lot of doc files and I need to search for text INSIDE these files. I am perplexed with the fact that no search tool is able to search for text INSIDE these file types. "cat" can display them of course, but grep is not able to locate text INSIDE these file types. I even tried to save a .doc file as an .odt file, but no luck. The Applications>Accessories>Search for Files does not search INSIDE doc, xls or ppt with the option "Contains the text".
