Fedora Hardware :: Netbook's Display Too Small
Jun 1, 2011
I'm running F15 on a netbook with a 1024x600 pixel display. For some things, this is too small - not high enough.
For example, when setting up Evolution (btw, why do I need to set up a mail-client to use my calendar? ) the forward and other buttons fall off, even though there's in all screens plenty of space to resize... I can guess how to go "Forward" with the tab-button. However, later on, I can't enter the server details, because they too fall off the bottom of the screen.
How can I fix it so that (one of the options below will suffice):
a) I can zoom the desktop (out! I know how to make everything bigger, but that doesn't help) so it all becomes visible, albeit very small?
b) Resize the evolution setup screen - et al?
c) Find another way to make it all visible?
The attached screenshot is just for illustration; this is what I see.

I am using F13 on my netbook for a week so far. Its worth mention, I am completely new new to Linux. Want to say many thanks to Fedora developers for such a great OS, it makes me really happy.
Now, on the subject, I have a very small monitor 1024x576, this is causing difficulties with GIMP, and more, I found that GIMP is too much 'overfeatured' :-( . Searching on this forum , I found posts about 'Kolour' for KDE desktop. Maybe you can recommend a similar simple image editor for Gnome desktop? Crop/resize and pencil tool where i can pick up color and draw pixels will suffice most of the time.
Also I am using Firefox a lot and thought whether it possible to get a small feature , I will try to describe it: when the window is maximized I want to hide the window's header and menu, which would give me extra 40-50 pixels height to the contents of the window.
Yeah, I know I can hide navigation bar, but how then I will type the page location?

I have a netbook with a maximum screen resolution of 1024x600. I'm running a dualboot Ubuntu10.10 & Backtrack4r2, and I'm having some trouble with windows whose "height" was larger than 600px. Buttons end up below the screen, and I can't click 'Ok' or 'Cancel' or 'Apply'.
When my OS was still Windows7, I didn't have any problems because I can resize all of the windows that I use. Most of windows in linux (esp. in KDE settings), the windows has a fixed height.
Is there any workarounds to my problem?

I have just spent hours upgrading 10.10 to 11.04 Natty and when I rebooted at the end, all I'm getting is a small box on screen saying OUT OF RANGE.
I do not have grub or windows or anything else to boot into, ubuntu was my main system, what can I do?
I have just tried another monitor and get the same thing.
Is there anyway I can boot in safe mode or something?
I am able to boot PC with a live CD (Karmic) but cant acess most of my files because I am not the owner apparently? Cant change permissions either?
Is there a way I can change something using the live CD so that Natty will boot properly?

I have recently bought a new notebook, an ASUS K501UX, and I have encountered some problems installing Debian 8.3 on it.
In fact, already during the installation process it looks like there are some problems with the video card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M), since the lower part of the screen is just black (even if it still "exists", that is the mouse can go "behind" it and click the "next" or "cancel" buttons which are "covered" by the black stripe): [URL] ....
This problem persists also after the installation. Furthermore, since the screen has a 4k resolution (3640x2160) all icons, windows and texts are painfully small: [URL] ....
As you can see, however, if I take a screenshot all the desktop is visualized. This is what the screen actually looks like in the lower part: [URL] ....
I tried changing the resolution from the Settings, but apart from 3640x2160 no other options are available. Furthermore, the display is labelled as "Unknown display": [URL] ....
I then tried to change it with xrandr, but the output of xrandr command is the following:
Code: Select allxrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 3840 x 2160, current 3840 x 2160, maximum 3840 x 2160
default connected primary 3840x2160+0+0 0mm x 0mm
3840x2160 0.00*
I then looked around the web, and found that this is a problem related to the video card driver. So, I followed the DebianWiki on the subject to install the driver, namely I installed the nvidia-driver package and then configured xorg with nvidia-xconfig. However, rebooting Debian, all I got is a blank screen with a flashing pointer, and xserver not working at all (if I press Alt+F3 and login and then try startx I get a long list of deadly-sounding errors like "screen not found").
What should I do? Should I try installing the drivers from the NVIDIA website? I've read (also in the DebianWiki) that this can cause problems to the system. Or is it really a driver problem? Why doesn't it detect the screen?

I connected an external 22" monitor to my new linux netbook and now I am trying to improve the display clarity. By shifting the "clock" monitor bar to 100 ,the letters were less faded but edges of my screen were lost (by zooming in). Can I fix that through Linux?

I upgraded to 11.04 about 10 days ago. I have this intermittently weird problem where some of the applications, some of the time, are oversized for the 1024 x 600 display. I can't get to the buttons on the bottom end of the screen, and the window refuses to decrease in size enough so that it all fits on. So far, I've had this problem with Evolution, Pytrainer, Gimp, and another one that escapes my memory.
Has anyone else had this issue? (Except for the Evolution bug, which has been around since 2005 or thereabouts. How on earth is that thing still the default when nobody bothers to fix it up?) how to a workaround? Heck, I don't even know where to go to report this kind of bug.

I recently got a Canon Powershot SD780 IS. It takes HD video at 780p. It's great, except that the videos won't display properly in Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Dell Mini 10v.I've tried using Gstreamer (Banshee), Xine (Totem-xine), and MPlayer (GNOME MPlayer). These all should have worked, which makes me think something may be wrong either with the files themselves or my computer. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?FYI, when I pull up the Properties dialogue for one of the videos and look in the Audio/Video tab, it says:
Video
Dimensions: 1280 x 720
Codec: H.264 / AVC
[code]....

I did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?

It appears that the default boot partition is too small for F12 preupgrade:[URL].. Did anyone try to see if enough space is freed by following these steps? : http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpg...ace_in_.2Fboot
Namely,
1. Leave only 1 kernel
2. tune2fs -r 0 /dev/xxx
3. remove /boot/efi and splash.xpm.gz
"preupgrade now requires at least 167MB" means more space could be needed, and I'm unclear if the above is sufficient.

I would like to ask whether somebody has had the similar experience after KDE 4.4 upgrade.
1. From the attached picture you can see that an icon for xine has a different size. When I change it manually and align the icon, it has previous status after the restart. If I delete that icon and recreate it again, it's smaller than other icons. Icon size for desktop is set up to 32, Desktop Activity.
2. Minimizing/maximizing e.g. Firefox breaks all icons in task bar. I am able to refresh only Firefox/Thunderbird icons.
What can cause these issues? Maybe:
1. my nouveau driver
2. bugs in KDE 4.4.
3. my theme

I'm trying to record my desktop and tested some solutions. While I was impressed how small .mng files could be, it is a disadvantage that I can't capture audio with it and many users won't be able to open these (browser / Windows). I have been very impressed by the xvidcap instruction videos: 4:30 in only 9MB, which makes 180MB for 90 minutes. This would be suitable. With Camtasia my professor even records 90min in 100MB. The problem is that xvidcap hasn't been updated since 2006 and seems to be dead. RecordMyDesktop needs 6MB for 1 minute or 540MB for 90 minutes, which is too much. Could anybody give me some hints on how to capture very small video files, which are still clear enough to read text in a format most users can open? It would also be cool to be able to show specific PDF or HTML pages synchronised to the video.

I'm kinda new to configuring wine in fedora. My issue is, after I upgraded to fedora 13 and after upgrading wine, my wine configuration gui and all the gui's of all *.exe applications that I was using started having abnormally large gui's with equally large buttons and small fonts. I have attached a screenshot of the wine config GUI as it appears on my screen. My current screen resolution is 1280X1024 and I'm using an integrated ATI chip (ATI Radeon x200 express) with the mesa-dri drivers for display.

I am using a 17" VGA monitor with 1024x768 resolution. With some tweaking, I'm pretty satisfied with GNOME Shell and its look. The only exception is the font of the text below the icons in Activities. On my monitor with this resolution, the text is just too small. As far as I know, it's the smallest text anywhere in the GUI. This is kind of an accessibility issue for me, since I do have a sight problem

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

It appears to me that fonts for Linux in general are rubbish. They couldn't get any smaller. I am new to linux having moved over from windows. I have a website that uses the Verdana font. Not recognized in Linux. Just about every forum I go on the fonts are barely readable they are so small. My screen resolution is 1024x 768. If there is no solution to this problem then I'm afraid it's back to windows for me as I'm getting very bad eyestrain. I'm not jesting there. Are there better fonts that can be installed? Incidentally, I tried Ubuntu which is worse.

I want to run SoundRecorder (or audacity). I just want to create a small audio file. I can't seem to get the mike to record. I start the record function and expect to see changes in the "Level" indicator that correspond to sounds that I utter.
-Search of google shows lots on solutions for non fedora 14
-FAQ - no hits
-Musicians Guide is 248 pages long and I did not see a solution for this simple case.
I have installed jack-audio, audacity and dependencies.

I have verified using yum that I have the most uptodate glut, freeglut, freeglut-devel etc., yet when I compile Example 2-6 from the Red Book at http://www.glprogramming.com/red/chapter02.html#name16, I get a window that is too small for the program output, includes display from other windows, and will not redraw after being resized.
I get slightly better behavior with the SGI sample program mentioned in the same book, 'checkers.c'. Again, the initial size is too small, but at least it will resize and redraw the checkerboards entirely inside the resized window. What is going on here? Is this some bug in glut? I can't see anything obviously wrong in their glut initialization, which looks like:
int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
glutInit(&argc, argv);
glutInitDisplayMode (GLUT_SINGLE | GLUT_RGB);
glutInitWindowSize (350, 150);
[code]...
Then again, since I am such a newbie to glut, I am not sure I would recognize what, if anything, they did wrong. what ARE the valid and useful command line parameters I could have passed to the main() above?

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I'm helping a colleague with his laptop, he finds the fonts within programs too small and they hurt his eyes. We have tried changed the fonts using System>Appearances>Fonts. Changed the dpi resolution in the "Details" section, and tried changing the screen resolution, but this doesn't work or make it better.
I have attached a screen shot to show the problem. As I hope you can see, the font size on the desktop and top tool bar is much larger than within the programs.
Can anyone help, we have looked through all of the menus we can think of, but nothing makes the font bigger.
