In the last couple of weeks I was trying to work thru some issues regarding access from my FC11 box to my WinXP box over the local network (Have had no problem using Samba to go the other way). I was trying to use smb4k and couldn't seem to make it work. Maybe that's because I use Gnome as my desktop (tho, I would guess that the install of smb4k would include necessary dependencies for KDE).I went back to this problem today and figured out how to access the window shares using Gnome Connect to Server function (Have tried it in the past but must have been doing something wrong). I now get the icon on my desktop and the appropriate listing in the Place menu.
What I notice is when I click on the icon (or select the share listing on the Place menu) to open the "folder" I get a duplicate of the icon on my desktop and duplicate listing on the Place menu. The window opens with access to the folder without any problem. If I close the window, it does so just fine, but I'm left with the duplicate icon and menu listing. To get rid of these "extraneous" items, I need to unmount the volume. Then the extra icon and Place menu listing are gone. If I already have opened the window and incurred a duplicate icon, etal., even if I close and then open it again, no more duplicates are added.Is this normal or is there a setting I need to change to keep this duplicate from happening.
I've had my FC11 x86_64 installation up and running for 6 months. Until a week ago, I was able to mount windows shares through Nautilis using their netbios names. About a week ago, this all broke with no tinkering on my part. Now, I can mount the shares using the IP address, but not using the netbios name.
When I make he attempt either from scratch or by using a previously working bookmark, I get "cannot display location "smb:\..." When I browse the network using Nautilis I can see the workgroup, but when I try to open it, I get "unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server." When I use nmblookup with the netbios name, the correct ip adress is returned.
The problem seemed to correspond to a software update that occurred on 2009-11-21 that included updates to selinux-policy and selinux-policy-targeted. SE Linux has the System Default Enforcing Mode set to disabled. The system default policy type is set to targeted with no other options available.nsswitch.conf file appears to have been changed on the same date, but reverting back to the backup version of the file failed to solve the problem. Samba is up and running. My linux shares are accessible from my windows boxes. The firewall is open to smb and smbclient.
This is a bit of a shameless cross-forum bump, as I'm really trying to crack samba in the hope of getting some server action going, and this is the closest I've been to actually understanding what I'm playing with. "Well, I've lasted a lot longer than usual before resorting to asking around, but I've finally gone delightfully mad. I've been trying to access shares based on Windows 7 Ultimate with limited user access on said shares. I've managed to get into my XP machine, another mate's Vista machine and various Linux boxes with no issues, but that's only for shares that are accessible by everyone. The moment I try to get into a share that requires user credentials, I get "Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED"
If I try to access restricted shares (be it machine or folder) through Nautilus, I will get a user logon prompt, but it fails. Using smbclient results in just as little success, and now I'm munching through O'Reiley's Samba manual from '99, after realising that I need to basically learn Samba in its entirety to have a hope in hell at getting this to work. The trouble is though, every HOWTO and relevant forum post I get my hands on all seem to concentrate more on the server side of things, and usually servering from a linux box, not the other way around as I'm trying to.
The above Windows 7 machine won't even allow me to view its share contents, whereas the XP machine will allow me to browse, but won't allow me to access folders with restricted access. I'm pretty sure there aren't any major issues with the way the Windows 7 machine is setup, as it can be accessed with logon from my Xbox, Ubuntu machine, XP and Vista, with only Fedora having problems getting in as it constantly fails logon. What I'm trying to establish is, if Ubuntu can get in, is there something in my Fedora samba config I'm missing that's preventing me access? My thanks in advance to those of you who've been able to put up with me rambling"As you'll see in my original fedoraforum post, the workgroup misreport issue mysteriously fixed itself after a few updates, although I'm inclined to blame my mate's Win 7 box...call it force of habit, I've just generally come to mistrust an OS that tries so diligently to shift focus away from its shell.
I am running Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and I currently have this computer and another Windows 7 PC connected together in the same workgroup. When I look at the Network on the Ubuntu File Browser, I can see the windows 7 pc there, but when I try to open it, I get the message Password Required - it wants a username, password and domain (the domain box is filled in with the workgroup name). Whatever set of credentials I try to input, the box just pops up again asking for password. Password protected sharing is disabled on the windows 7 pc and I have even tried disabling Windows firewall to no effect. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux and am therefore completely stuck - what I really want is to access a shared printer connected to the Windows 7 pc from the Linux machine.
Does anybody know if there is a quick and easy way to simply disable samba security to avoid "Access Denied" errors when trying to access shares via Windows XP?
Running Ubuntu 10.10 M-M..Running Network, my machine sees my Windows Workgroup, and even the machines on the workgroup. When I try to access those machines, I get a message "Failed to retrieve share list from server." I've been able to mount other machines by using straight IP accesss, but that is of little use since IP addresses are not Static.
My first post, having only installed 11.04 at the weekend on one of my old PCs.Everything is up & running pretty well, I have a 100BT home network with 4 Windows XP PCs and a Synology DS211j server.I can see & access these other shares from Ubuntu, but it's so slow to connect, approx. 45 seconds each time, compared to almost instant from any of the XP machines.Could someone suggest how this performance could be improved?
when I try to access the shares from a Win98 laptop. The server name shows up in the Network Neighborhood (freaking childish names!) but when I double-click it, Win98 keeps asking me for the password for the \SHOPIPC$ connection. I have deleted the .pwl file on the Win98 and logged in using the same user/pass combination as I do on the Linux. On the Linux, I ran 'smbpasswd -a derek' and supplied my password.Windows XP sees the server just fine, but Windows 98 just does not want to play nice. Is there any thing that I can do to fix this without breaking the connection to the XP box or the Linux laptop?
So I setup the newest Ubuntu on my old desktop on a 30g HD and have 2 200G HDs with a ntfs file system on those two. I got SSH and FTP configured, then went on to setup Samba.I have it (seemingly) set up well. /dev/sb1 gets mounted on /data1 /dev/sc1 gets mounted on /data2.I want anyone connected to my router to be able to see this machine and be able to read and write to both shares.
I configured WINS on my laptop to point to the linux box. and i've seen the pc in question (TECH-PC) in "My Network Places" on both of our laptops.Long story short, I try to connect to my network share and it says i don't have permission and i need to contact my network admin. This computer is the only one with Linux installed, the rest are windows-OS.Let me know if you need more info, pretty stumped here, have searched, read, scrapped my install and started from scratch, maybe i need to sleep on it
Ok this is a really weird issue because of the way it played it out. I have been researching it off and on for weeks now trying to figure it out and have come up with nothing. Basically when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) I was able to access the shared files on my Windows 7 (64 bit) computer perfectly once I changed the domain name in Samba. However I wasn't able to access my Ubuntu shares from Windows 7. After researching for a while to figure that out, I found this:[URL]... Boom! Instantly I could access my Ubuntu shares without a problem from Windows 7.
However after I did this something happened where I could no longer access Windows 7 files from Ubuntu. Unfortunately I am not sure if the change happened immediately or some time later. When I go Places > Network I see the name of my Ubuntu computer (Living-Room) and my Windows computer (Nick-PC) as well as a folder called "Windows Network." When I open Nick-PC it brings up a dialog box saying a password is required. There are three text entry fields and a couple option:
Username: Nick Domain: NRAU Password: [not filled in] _ Forget password immediately _ Remember password until you logout _ Remember password forever
The password field has to be filled in and I have tried every option. Each time it thinks for a second and then just pops the same dialog box again.
My XBMC box has been working just fine for a few months. I could easily browse to the Windows shares located on a machine running Windows 7 both within XBMC and Nautilus. However, now I can't browse to the shares using either XBMC or Nautilus (via Places - Network). Furthermore, when using smbclient in terminal I get the following error:
Code: smbclient -L fileserver protocol negotiation failed: ERRnomem.I have tried using the IP number as well (the host is entered in the hosts file.I can ping the machine just fine, using either the IP number or the host name, but the ability to browse its shares is impossible. I can access the shares using another Windows 7 machine, so the shares are there.
I've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.
What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".
I marked this solved when I discovered, after much reconfiguring, I had a faulty Netgear router - I just thought I'd save you reading all this to find the answer.I have 3 machines at home all running Lucid. All have Samba and shared folders but I can't access files on any machine from any other. This worked ok when they were running Karmic. I'm also unable to set up printing across the network from the two machines without local printers. The main machine has 2 printers connected via USB, the others are using WiFi. I'm not using firewalls on any machine.
Filesharing On any machine I go to Places, Network and Nautilus opens at network:/// and shows me 'Windows Network' I open that and see the Workgroup folder which I open and see the folder is empty. (I did see the 3 machines before I completely removed Samba and re-installed a few minutes ago)
Printing On one of the remote machines I go to Add Printer, Select Device, Network Printer, Windows Printer via Samba, Browse but I can't see the machine with the printers attached in the Workgroup. Another clue is that when I look at the printer properties, policies on the main machine all 3 boxes are ticked, Enabled, Accepting jobs (but it says Not published) and Shared.
I am working as a Linux administrator in a very small data centre with 5 servers with following routine tasks.
1. Managing SAMBA shares and giving user specific access for the shares. 2. Scheduling backup of some mount points with rsycn to store data in remote hard disk 3. User and group administration, with sudo access. 4. Creating and Managing Xen Virtual machines and giving access to other project teams. 5. Automating some tasks with Shell Scripting. 6. Managing FTP server for user uploads.
I have practiced a lot in my home laptop without RHEL training, Cleared RHCE and LPIC1. I want to do some advanced system admin tasks, but do not have option in my current data centre. With Above skills is it possible to get a job ?
I have successfully mounted windows shares in to ubuntu and can able to access the folders from nautilus. But i wanted to open the mounted share folders from the "open file browser(select a file dialog)" in DeVeDe app. I have tried all the options, and nothing worked out.
The shares get mounted correctly and you can navigate through the directories and open files.The only problem is that it randomly starts going really slow taking 30 seconds or longer to open a directory that has 2 or 3 files in it.I have tried quite a few things to try and fix this without any luck. Its getting to the point where I am having to consider recommending that we use windows instead, which I would rather not do as I think its good for students to experience different operating systems during school.
I am a Linux newbie, and this is my third attempt in 5 years to become a regular user, and drop microsoft once and for all. Unfortunately, I am having difficulties. Normally it's a good way to learn, but I've been spinning my wheels for 4 days on one problem. It's compounded by the fact that I'm just learning even basic commands. From Trout, I can access share folder named 'share' on bclaptop. I can also access 'shareddocs' on bdc.From both Xp machines I can access the other xp machines shared folders, but cannot access the shares on Trout, these shares names are 'share' and 'lshare'. On Trout GUI file browser if I go to 'Network' find 'Trout' (looking at itself on the network) I get "Unable to mount location: failed to mount windows share".
I can ping any other machine from any machine using either it's name or IP address. The windows machines do see Trout. The Linux shares can be seen in XP's 'My Network Places'.The network is on a 2-wire router/modem. The original windows network name (workgroup?) is 'Timber'. The workgroup created by Samba is 'mygroup'. They appear to be different workgroups, and Trout is in 'mygroup', and xp machines are in 'Timber'. I don't understand this part enough to know if this is significant.I "believe" I have the permissions wide open for 'lshare', but not 100% certain on any of this (newbie), so ask anything, please. I fumbled through Samba trying first to do it with text editor, then ended up with GUI Samba Editor. Looks to me like services smbd and nmbd are running. The Samba Editor made a rather large smb.conf file, so I'll just put what I think is relevant
I'm just staring with fedora 11 and I want to know how to do the following: 1- Connect to windows shares on another PC. 2- Set these shares to be accessible in the Computer location at all times.
I've been running a Samba server under RedHat 8 for five years without a hiccup. I want to cut over to a F10 box but cannot get shares accessible. smbclient attempts fail over NT password error. SELinux is disabled. Server is visible on the network. Users require no password access to shared data.

I am unable to mount Windows shares on Fedora 12. From Nautilus, I can navigate to the shares, but when I attempt to open one I get a dialog "Password required for share ... on ..." asking for username (prepopulated with my username), domain (prepopulated with MYGROUP) and password. I have the same username on the Windows box, but when I enter the password and click Connect, the dialog just pops up again. I'm not sure what "domain" is, tried with my Windows workgroup name, no good. If I blank out either username or domain, the Connect button is disabled.
I tried using the mount command:mount -t cifs //192.168.0.2/... /tmp/mnt -o username=adrian,password=...,iocharset=utf8,file_m ode=0777,dir_mode=0777 That did work once, but now gives the useful error message:mount error(5): Input/output error Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) I can run Windows instead on the client machine, and that gives me access to the shares, no problem.
I have libsmbclient-3.4.5-55.fc12.i686, but that was installed a month ago. I don't see any more recent changes to anything relating to the samba client. I've never had to enter a password to access Windows shares. Actually, it looks like the problem may be on the Windows side, although as far as I know, nothing has changed there. Using smbclient with debuglevel set high, I see failures with this error:SPNEGO login failed: NT_STATUS_REQUEST_NOT_ACCEPTED Every now and again, I can connect to one or more shares, but after a few attempts, I can't connect to any more. Tried rebooting the Windows box, but that's had no effect. Oh, and "smbclient -L" shows domain as the host name of the windows box, but anonymous login (smbclient -L -N) shows domain as the workgroup name.
I am in the process of migrating my small workplace to a basic spin i've created of f14. Everything is suave but some file browser windows eg: file upload in gmail, hotmail etc, does not show my samba shortcuts i've created nor even the option to browse the network in the "places" section. It shows other locally created shortcuts but no samba ones. Just to test it, even creating an ftp:// shoftcut yeilds no dice. I had a quick search through the forums and I couldn't find anything. I have a feeling this has an easy solution that my inferior brain cannot comprehend! Loving F14 on my macbook pro and so are my employees in my office! Feels much less bloated than Ubuntu IMHO.
After booting, the sda5 and sda8 mounts work fine, but the Windows shares haven't been mounted. If I enter the command: mount -a everything works fine. I don't know if this a timing issue, or something to do with the new systemd stuff, but it has happened in previous Fedora releases from time to time.
I had an older fedora box (I think it was Core 3) that acted as my file server in my small network (4). It worked fine when I had all XP clients connecting to it. Recently we decided to get all new computers. So now I have a fedora 10 box acting as my file/print server and all Vista Home premium computers as the clients. For the life of me I can not get samba to work. When I try to map the network drives on windows it will not let me authenticate. I install swat and try it that way, still no luck. We are using spare parts (Socket 775 Biostar motherboard, OCZ 500wat PSU) to build a computer that will just be another system in the house. I want this system to be running Folding@Home, and the F@H SMP client for Linux is much less of a headache than its Windows couterpart, so I would like this computer to run Fedora. My dad loves networking, and knows how to do it in XP / Vista, so he has always opposed my frequent use of Linux. There are ways of accessing Windows shared folders from Linux, but that I haven't figured it out yet. I want to access Windows shared folders from my Fedora 10. I don't know how to go about doing this, can anyone point me in the right direction? Do I have to install anything special? I can go to Places, and then Network (in Gnome) and I see "Windows Network", but when I click it, I get "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server"
I have a rather strange need to keep a FAT16 partition to run a very old DOS app (diving computer interface)which talks directly to the hardware and therefore refuses to run under anything that a pure DOS (I can run it under "qemu" but the interface doesn't work this way).So, side by side with my SAS RAID array sits an old SCSI-2 disk with one FAT16 and few HPFS partitions, mirrored from my old (but still working) OS/2+DOS PC.
I am currently trying to set up a small network in which my first computer has a NFS share going to three other computers. I have been able to set up this share correctly, however I am having problems in granting full Read/Write permissions to all user accounts across the computers.
At the moment I am not using NIS or any-other account synchronization tool and I am wondering if there is another way, without the need of the mentioned tools.
In our current setup Win 7 users get prompted for a user-name and password which they don't need, and I have even tried root password. so I think i need to upgrade my samba server.
I have had server running for over a year and have run into my first major issue. I am no longer able to browse to the server by hostname or IP and view all available Samba shares. I receive a windows popup informing me I do not have permissions However I am still able to browse to the shares themselves \hostnameshare.I am currently assuming this is an issue with the config of the samba share module/
