Debian :: Why Not Establishing Official User Based Repository

Aug 19, 2011

One may argue that Debian is going mainstream being officially supported by Linux Mint. The chances are high that many users may change from the Ubuntu to the Debian base. By now especially Ubuntu's PPA has grown to a huge respository offering almost anything an user would need. But how does that look like in a Debian world?

There are several approaches to establish a "Debian PPA", amongst them debppa, but there activity is low not to say that they are almost inactive and orphaned. As coming from an Archlinux and Ubuntu perspective I do not know the Debian perspectives enough to reason this but am still curious to know about your motives not establishing a userbased repository.

OpenSUSE Install :: Official Repository For Newer Kernels?

May 12, 2010

Are there any official, almost-official or maybe even reasonably stable kernel repositories with new kernels for opensuse 11.2? I recently changed my laptop for a new one which has some issues, which then again are solved in 2.6.33 (and even in 2.6.32 with some tweaking). I would by any means try to avoid kernel recompilation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading 10.04 Beta 2 To Official Releas?

Apr 15, 2010

I need to install a distro on a new machine. I'm edging towards Ubuntu 10.04 but I don't have time to wait until the official release date. If I install Beta 2 and continue to update it until the official release will my version be the same as the official release or am I going to have to make a fresh install of the official release?

I don't mind putting up with some minor bugs (especially as some big ones seem to have been solved since Beta 1) but I can't be doing with another fresh install. This seems to be a problem with a lot of distros. Fedora is every 6 months with no LTS solution, Debian is outdated on a lot of packages I use and Arch just seems to spend a lot of it's time broken.

Ubuntu :: Upgrading Netatalk Past The Official Meerkat Release Version?

Jan 8, 2011

Shortly after upgrading to Meerkat I discovered that my macbook timemachine backups became unreliable to the point of uselessness. After a bit of googling it appears that Meerkat's version of Netatalk (2.1.2) has some issues that bust timemachine. These issues are supposedly fixed in version 2.1.3. So... what is the best way for me to go about upgrading Netatalk past the official Meerkat release version?

The Netatalk project is at version 2.1.5. I could uninstall the Meerkat packages and just try to build Netatalk directly from source. However I'm a little leary about losing all of my existing AFPD filesystem meta-data. The Natty Narwhal repository appears to have version 2.1.4 which I've read should solve my problem. Is there any way to install the binaries from the Natty repositories? Can I download the source package from the Natty repositories and rebuild the package with Meerkat libraries/dependencies?

Ubuntu Installation :: Local Repository Not Upgrading?

Jun 9, 2011

The school where my wife works has a local repository, which makes upgrading really easy (considering I live in Ethiopia and bandwidth is limited...). But the problem is that I don't know how to upgrade the sources. They are all still saying Lucid instead of Natty.

how do I update my sources so that they are relevant for Natty? Is it just a matter of changing "lucid" to "natty"? Or something more complicated?

Debian :: Backports Service Becoming Official?

Sep 7, 2010

The Debian Project is proud to announce that the backports service, previously available at [URL].. is now an official Debian service and will be available from backports.debian.org Backports are packages from the testing distribution recompiled for the current stable (or even oldstable) to provide users of the stable distribution with new versions of some packages, like the Linux kernel, the Iceweasel browser or the OpenOffice.org suite, without sacrificing the general stability of the system.

The archive currently has packages backported for the Lenny distribution (how many?), but the infrastructure to accept packages for the upcoming Squeeze release is already in place, to allow Debian Installer images to configure the backports repository by default without generating errors on user systems. The service for Squeeze will be enabled at a later date, after the release.

Because of some limitations in the Debian Bug Tracking System, any bugs relevant to backported packages still have to be reported to the debian-backports list, which will now also move on lists.debian.org.

Debian Multimedia :: Official Policy For Newer Versions Of KDE?

Feb 27, 2011

I just wanted to ask about official opinion or policy concerning newer versions of KDE. Is 4.6 still so buggy or unstable to be included in experimental? What steps are going to be made concerning KDE and what when? I don't like GNOME, KDE 3.5 is out of the game now in 6.0 and KDE 4.4 is IMHO all but mature and finished. So I am not sure what to do now, Kubuntu is buggy and don't like it but they have 4.6...

Debian Installation :: How Long Takes Rebuilding Official Kernel ?

Jan 2, 2011

Here are 2 questions

1.In the last line of the debian kernel handbook 4.2.2 Applying patches

It is possible to apply extra patches to the source before starting the build. First, you should apply the existing patches by running:

You will then find the patched source in the subdirectories debian/build/source_arch_none (default) and debian/build/source_arch_featureset (featuresets added).

You should apply the extra patches in the appropriate subdirectory. where can I find the "extra patchies" and how to do?

2.Even though More than 8 hours have passed, 4.2.3 Building many packages

To build all possible packages for this architecture, run:

To build all architecture-dependent packages, run:

To build all architecture-independent packages, run:

The 1st command still working. what is the all possible packages? and what I am doing?

I am just trying to rebuild debian linux kernel 2.6.26-2, Did I misunderstand?

Debian Hardware :: ATI Radeon HD3200 And Official Driver In Squeeze?

Apr 5, 2010

I am using the latest squeeze (2.6.32-6 kernel) on a Thinkpad X100e.Most things works fine (after some tinkering though) but I cannot install the official ATI driver.I have tried:1) Downloaded the latest official drivers from ATI's site.a) If I choose install, it says that everything works but the driver is not actually installed. After reboot I don't have X anymoreb) If I choose build packages for Debian testing, the packages are not built. 2) Downloaded the not so latest official drivers. Same as in case 1)3) Tried to install them with the sgfxi script. The script reports a success but still after a reboot, I have no X.4) Tried to apt-get install fglrx-driver package from sid. Everything installs fine, after reboot I have X but no 3d acceleration.

Debian :: Upgrading X Stack On Debian Stable?

Jun 6, 2011

I've been setting up a Lenovo Thinkpad T420i and have gotten most of the kinks worked out, except for the fact that the display has some annoying artifacts as you navigate around, I guess due to bad video support. A post [URL].. on the same machine said that upgrading all X packages to sid (unstable) fixed these problems, but those packages aren't available in stable.

I read another post (can't find the link now) that said Debian wasn't planning on backporting all the X packages, only related libraries and modules. And I don't know which ones specifically would fix the issues I'm having.

So I thought I'd ask what my options are. I could update all those to unstable, but that doesn't seem optimal (and in the future I don't want unstable bugs bringing down my whole X session). Is there a way to find out what I need and backport some myself. Or do I just need to wait until the appropriate packages filter down to stable (or at least backports)?

Fedora Installation :: Error Getting Repository Data For Installed, Repository Not Found

Feb 14, 2010

Today I installed Fedora12 from the DVD, so this is my first contact with all of you. The last years I ran very well with gentoo, but the time for system maintenance got to big the last few times I updated the system, so I decided to change and here am I. The Problem: My system is newly installed from the DVD and I was trying to run the first update, but got the following errormassage by KPackageKit:

Code:
Error Type:
Error Value: Error getting repository data for installed, repository not found
File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3125, in
main()
File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3122, in main
backend.dispatcher(sys.argv[1:])
File : /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/packagekit/backend.py, line 710, in dispatcher
self.dispatch_command(args[0], args[1:])

[Code]...

It occured after informing me about the amount of packages that need to be updated and a message about some dependencies that have to be newly installed. At the moment I'm a bit lost about what to do. Also I realy don't know which system-information would be useful - let me know and I will answer.
