Debian :: Preventing Email Loss During ISP Change

Sep 11, 2011

I will move my VPS account between hosting services. When I do this I am concerned about losing emails sent between the last user's download and when the IP number changes as the change propagates through the DNS.

Debian :: Preventing System From Changing Cpufreq Settings

Apr 10, 2011

I am not sure where to post that so I'll just try here.My main question is: How can I prevent the system from changing my cpufreq settings? I'd like to keep the CPU load as low as possible so these settings are probably the best. However when I run some applications that require a higher CPU load the system changes the governor to performance and the rang to 0.8 - 2.4 GHz.And that's my problem. I neither know what application exactly is responsible for changing my cpufreq settings nor do I know how to turn that off.Or is it supposed to be that way?

Debian Configuration :: Nautilus Segfault Preventing Login By Gdm

Mar 5, 2010

I removed my .gnome and .nautilus folders and .notifier file. it is working now. I do not know exactly which of these 3 fixed it but I hope this might help someone else!I have some major issue with nautilus which is preventing me from loogging in into my system which is kind of criticle this weekend.I'm running Squeeze with latest updates.

The problem:Today gnome gave some problems caus my taskbar was suddently gone. I couldn't get it back to i reinstall gnome-desktop and updated my whole system. At the update some yes/no questions on a blue screen asking me to restart cups etc had corrupted yes/no buttons. Weird character sets were shown. Well that can happen sometimes i thought. After reinstalling gnome i can't login anymore. My screen keeps flashing while it shows the loading icon of the mouse.Anyone got suggestions? I can't find similar problems on the internet, only problems that happen while already logged in. In my case the segfault prevents gdm starting!

Debian Configuration :: Preventing Multiple Instances Of User?

Sep 6, 2010

Currently, a user is able to log into multiple terminals simultaneously, creating a copy of their roaming profile on each, and potentially causing problems if the instances are logged out in the wrong order. Is there any way to prevent this, so that if a user has logged in on a machine and not logged out (and perhaps some timeout has not yet expired) then their login attempts on another machine will be rejected.

Debian Hardware :: Printer Add Failure Preventing Move From Kubuntu

Apr 22, 2014

I've been using Debian-based distros for years with satisfaction. Recently I was running Kubuntu, but for reasons I need not relate here, I decided to try a switch to Debian/KDE.

I installed on a separate partition the Netinstall version of Debian Jessie Alpha 1. I have used the Netinstall in the past, because it lets me install mostly what I actually use. All is going well, except the addition of my Brother HL-2270DW laser printer.

In Kubuntu, CUPS found both the USB and network connections to the printer, and installation was successful. In Debian, the network connection is not seen, and the USB version will not print a test page. Here is the relevant error from /var/cups/error.log:

Debian :: Sync Equivalent Or Other Options When Loss Of Power?

Jan 24, 2011

I'm wondering what my alternatives are when I lose power to the external hard drive where I have Debian installed. I realize that the best answer may be a battery backup UPS for the external hard drive. It seems that I recall that when a similar scenario happened on my SunOS Sparc workstation, I would simply hit [Stop-A] and then type in the "sync" command. I now have a laptop and am running Debian off of an external harddrive that has its own power supply. When I lose power, my laptop obviously continues to keep running but my session is essentially and understandably hosed because the main filesystem is not accessible. Gnome desktop goes away and I am thrown to the main console login. When power resumes, I cannot login to attempt a remount or anything. When I hit [ctrl-alt-del] thinking that that is less forceful than just holding down the main power on the laptop, I get cannot execute "/sbin/shutdown". Is there a [STOP-A] sync equilavent or some way or keyboard sequence to get to GRUB to issue a reboot command?

Debian Hardware :: Audio - Random Loss Of Sound

Jan 9, 2015

I'm having problems keeping audio working. Using Sparky with 3.16.0-4 kernel on a homebuilt PC. AMD A10-7850K CPU on a Gigabyte F2A88FN-WIFI mobo.

I'm using a set of Logitech Z-5 USB speakers and I repeatedly lose all audio output. To get it back I need to do 1 or all of these steps:

1) Unplug the speakers
2) Kill all processes that may be producing audio (Chrome beta, IceWeasel, Exaile, etc.)
3) Start Alsamixer and select another source in sound card list then reselect USB card #2.
4) The weird one - Remove and then re-add the volume applet that I like to have in the panel. When I lose sound th slider gets "stuck" and will not move. It will not recover.

I may need to repeat this several times but it will come back. Not immediately after any step but after a few attempts it just begins working as long as nothing is trying to produce audio at the moment. Sometimes Alsamixer says that my USB Card has no controls when I reselect it, not every time though.

Most of the time if I have more than 1 source open at any time it is likely to die again, for instance I like to stream Google Play Music. If I pause that but leave it open, then try to watch a Youtube video or other source I will either get no audio from either source, or lose the streaming audio source when I try to restart it. Going through the above routine 1 or more times usually restores it.

I have created asoundrc.conf file to tell system to use USB audio as described here -> [URL] ..... In my case USB is # 3 in the list. So this is my file:

Code: Select allpcm.!default {
type hw
card 2
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 2

Networking :: Random Network Connection Loss On Debian Server?

May 15, 2011

I have been having this problem for about two weeks now where Debian's network and internet connection randomly fails. It works perfectly fine and hosts all the services I need for a while, and then without warning all network connectivity fails. I can't ping any other network device. Regardless of how much I try to fix it, the only thing that works is restarting the computer. First, the server went 7 days without a problem; then 5 days; now it lasted 2 days. Judging from my Teamspeak server logs, it crashed today at 12:31. I grep'd through my log files and found this information:

Debian Configuration :: Multiple Partition Setups Other Than Resistance To Data Loss In Crashes?

Feb 25, 2010

What are the advantages of the multiple partition setups other than resistance to data loss in crashes? Is there any other reason to have a special partition just for your boot directory (kernel files and config) than surviving a major crash?

Also, is it possible to make the Debian installer accept an existing set of partitions? Or even alter the size of the automatically created partitions? Does expert mode let you control the partitions? How many other very detailed things would I have to know to use expert mode, though?

Ubuntu :: Use An Email Client Like Alpine To Read Imported Email?

Feb 24, 2011

we had a server with Hostway, and it was running ubuntu. The server also had Plesk installed, which did some funny things. We had several websites on that server, and many email addresses. Then we changed servers. Now we have a server through Rackspace and it is also running Ubuntu. It also has Virtualmin installed, which generally does not impose as many unconventional changes on Ubuntu as Plesk did.

Rather than using Thunderbird to download my email (which is what I used to do) I've decided I'll start reading my email on the server. So I will ssh to the server and then use some email client, such as Alpine, to read the email. So I installed Alpine. I have an email account for "lawrence". The email address is lawrence @ krubner. Currently, when mail arrives for that account, it is stored here:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new

and then it is transferred to hear:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur

When I start Alpine, while logged in as lawrence, Alpine automatically sets up an inbox for me here:

/home/lawrence/mail/

How do I get Alpine (or any other client) to read from the correct folder? I'm fairly sure the email package (the MTA) at work on this new server is Postfix. As near as I can tell, my email is held for 24 hours in this folder:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new

and then it gets transferred here:

/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur

Alpine only lets me set one path for my Inbox, so I'm not sure what path I should set. If I use "cur" I will see all email 1 day late, but if I use "new" then I will miss email if I go a day without checking.
