every since i hooked up the internet to my computer i've had nuthing but problems everytime i boot up. in gdm, the greeter failed everyother time. so i switched to kdm. now everyother time the screen freeze's.
View 2 RepliesI hooked up my laptop via monitor cable to the L.C.D. T.V. and ran a patch I found on Ubuntu forums because it wasn't showing up on the T.V. After that it asked me what screen resolution I wanted I entered it and then the screen worked! However, now when I play movies on either the T.V as a monitor or just on the laptop itself it comes out with bad video quality now. It sucks because that was the purpose of hooking up my T.V. as the monitor was to watch movies and videos I have downloaded.

My computer gets internet through wireless and I want to share that internet through its ethernet port. So far I've tried using Knetworkmanager to create a network bridge between my wireless and wired connections. I created a new wired connection and shared it using the ip address settings. I was able to get both connections active, but the device hooked up via ethernet had no internet connectivity.
I also tried this command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
but another test resulted in the same fashion (no internet on wired). I believe anything I add to /proc should have an immediate effect, correct?
having major trouble installing Debian.erased the data on one of the partitons that used to hold Vector Linux and tried to install Debian on but it failed for some reason.Since I'm dead tired (well, was) I thought I would call it a night and just wait until tomorrow to finish the installation.So, I rebooted my computer and all it would do is this:

I recently installed another Linux distro, Kali Linux, alongside my Debian 8 and discovered to my chagrin that my computer boots to Kali's grub rather than to the Debian grub. I had spent some time customizing Debian's grub and would hate to see that effort go to waste. Is there a way I can get my computer to boot to Debian's grub instead? I tried deleting Kali's boot partition with gparted but that did not seem to do anything.

After booting up, Lightdm starts, and then a moment or two later restarts. As a result, any keystrokes captured by the first run (e.g. the first few characters of my username) are lost. My lightdm log is:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running iceweasel 44.0.2 on debian stretch w/ xfce. I'm suddenly having a problem with iceweasel freezing and subsequently freezing my desktop. It can be fixed by deleting the .mozilla file (cache?). When iceweasel starts freezing up, the other browsers (both chromium and chrome) freeze up as well. I honestly don't even know how to start to address what is going on.

I have both IceWeasel and Chromium, and every other time I try to use either, it freezes the whole computer, the screen shows only diagonal colors, and I have to hard boot. I have another windows and linux computer on this network with no problems at all. I have run checks on the ram on this computer which found no problems. Everything else on the computer works fine.

When I came back, the file had been properly converted but the computer was at the login prompt. I assume that it rebooted when the conversion was complete. Is this normal behavior? I don't see any avconv 'switches' to prevent that from happening.

I have a older dell inspiron laptop running xubuntu 9.10. It has run fine for quite a while. I recently hooked it up to my plasma tv to watch some some movies and now it crashes when I try to log in. The process I used to hook it to the TV was: connect VGA cable then boot into the external monitor, then shutdown. I have done this in the past with other laptops and it always went back to normal when I boot without the VGA cord attached.
What happens now is I try to log in then the screen flashes and sends me back to the login screen. One more thing to add, I didn't have to use the login screen prior to this problem, it was set for auto-login.How can I fix this? I can get to the terminal via CTRL + F2 and via SSH.
I'm now working to install Debian 8 on another computer since yesterday. Another Linux, and as always, endless list of problems.
- A computer that was freezing at every installation attempt (but never at the same moment) during installation when the Broacom cardbus adapter was connected (it's a chance that it is easy to remove and I found it quickly... and it is working once installation is finished)
- Turning to sleep mode after 15 seconds if I don't quickly try to login
- BOINC receive no work
- Tray icons are here but invisible - no icons, just gray space
- xserver-xorg-video-savage is installed, but I have resolution problems, and weird glittering horizontal lines when the computer is working (as on my other PC with the SiS video card).
On Debian 7.8, it was working fine for having the 1024x768 native resolution of this laptop screen.
But, with debian 8, the max resolution is now "800x600" and with this screen, there is no smooth effect : the image is a disaster.

How to confirm that my Video card is included into xserver-xorg-video-savage package ? How do I know if the driver is loaded ? How to modify xorg confifugration files in this modern flavour of Linux in order to force adding the 1024x768 resolution ? I already succeed into /etc/default/grub and "update-grub" for the bootloader screen but I want it too in the desktop environment.
I am looking for a way to use my computer as a regular landline telephone not by VoIP but by actually dialing on my landline to talk. I don't know what software I need. My searches only bring up VoIP stuff leaving me stuck without answers. I am using a new installation of debian 5.0. I think that's all, if you need more details I can add them.

This seemed to work fine in Debian Lenny, and the laptop screen would switch off after a period of inactivity as I expected. Now the laptop screen blanks after inactivity, but the backlight never switches off.

OS is running well, I have a PCI RocketModem III (8 port) installed and running, and HYLAFax installed and functioning (faxes are received & emailed to faxmaster). We would like to route faxes to email recipient's based on DID numbers, which seems to be possible if you can send the DIDs via DTMF. I have our PBX routing fax calls to a hunt group, which has a single analog line (for setup & testing) that is hooked up to the RocketModem. Faxes come in without issue. The PBX is set to send the DID via DTMF tones once the modem picks up. I verified using minicom that all is working properly from the phone system to the RocketModem ports. I am running Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment.
I was unhappy with the lock screen on Xfce so I removed xscreensaver and wrote a short custom locking script, which basically involves using i3lock along with some additional commands to make things pretty. I was able to change the default locking behaviour by modifying /usr/bin/xflock4 to run my_lock.sh.
Unfortunately, no lock screen appears whenever I suspend ie after waking the computer from suspension I don't need to type a password in. I would like to force Xfce to lock the screen with my_lock.sh before actually suspending, but I don't know how to do this.
I know that Xfce runs Code: Select allxfce4-session-logout -s when suspending, but xfce4-session-logout is a binary file which I cannot edit.
we usually have to access a batch of computers that is located on campus. This is straightforward enough on Windows, the OS that the computer support center cares about, but I'm interested to see how I would handle this in Debian. The process for Windows is:
1) Run the authentication program, which runs in the background.
2) Use Exceed on Demand (or Putty, but I can't really use that for my classes ), and log into the server. From there, it lets you log in to whatever computer you want. When logging on with Exceed on Demand, Solaris environment is then launched.
Now, I know there's not a lot of technical information here, and I apologize, but I know next to nothing about networking. What I do know is that I'm remotely accessing a secure computer, and then I ssh over to another computer (when using Putty, which was only command-line). I was wondering how easy or hard this would be to do through Debian, including the fact that I need to have the authentication program running.
I am starting to hate using NetworkManager instead of the good old "network" option. This is my problem. I have a modem I got from my ISP. My F10 server is hooked up directly to this router, and gets a static IP address of: 22.34.45.33 (Hypothetical ip). I then have a wireless router on my network, that connects directly to my isp's modem, and gets a static IP address aswell. Attached to the wireless router are all of the desktops in my house.
I have more than one network card in my server, so I want to plug my server into my router so I can share files. Whenever I do this, I get DNS issues. My postfix cannot receive email, but it can send it. Once the local interface is disconnected, I regain the ability to recieve email from postfix. I am so confused. This is my first encounter using NetworkManager. I just switched from CentOS.
I have three monitors. Two are hooked up to an ATI card and the third to an nVidia 6800 card. This third monitor is not being recognized. I tried installing nVidia's official Linux drivers but received an error that no compatible device is present. Going into System > Preferences > Display shows only my first two monitors. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 x64.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.
I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.
Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....
I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:
- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this
I just found couple of tutorials to help me boot Ubuntu using a USB on an old computer. This is exciting! Basically it works like this: Download a program and burn it as an ISO, and it allows you to insert your USB stick, and boot ubuntu (or other OS).
Anyone ever tried this? Because I am about to try it and I have some questions.
Once I download ubuntu, do I have to use use a tool such as UNetbootin to make it bootable, Or I just extract the contents of the ISO? btw here are the tutorials 1 and 2
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on an old computer. Basic stats are a 350 MHz Pentium II, 768 MB RAM, and an ATI Rage IIc--not sure how much video memory at the moment. I managed to install XP on it at one point, but decided not to let it stay a Windows box.The computer won't boot from the Ubuntu 9.10 CD, nor the alternate install CD. It gets as far as displaying:ISOLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008-07-15 Copyright (c) 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvinbut the never does anything else. Anybody have some ideas about what is happening or what I can try or do differently?

While booting up it hangs up after the following is displayed:

I've tried ctrl-alt-delete, it restarts, asks me how I want to reboot, and whether I choose generic or recovery mode it still hangs up here. What can I do to be able to access my computer again.
I have an old dell laptop that I want to put ubuntu on but it doesn't have a cd drive, I can't boot from a network, and the bios doesn't support a usbdrive. It does have a floppy drive and I wanted to know if there is a bootfloppy that allows me to boot from a usb?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for about one year. Recently upgraded to 10.04. The PC tries to boot, comes to the "Booting from device hd..." screen and then shuts down. It shuts down or halts but doesn't power off. The CPU is still powered. This happens for about 2 in 4 boots. The recovery mode runs just fine. It says no damaged partitions. Only the 'booting from device' is the problem point.

I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.
Yesterday I was working on my laptop using the windows 7 partition. At some point it froze and I ended up just having to shutting it down by holding in the power button. When I started it up, it said something along the lines of "can't find bootable partition".
