Debian Multimedia :: Can't Play Encrypted DVD
Dec 28, 2014
I have buyed a dvd, but I can not play it. I've installed libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 already. However, when I start Totem, it doesn't work. It says: "Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed". I use debian stable (wheezy).

I attempted to make a copy of Saw V and Saw VI using K3B. In both cases, the copy did not play on a stand-alone DVD player. The menus worked, but the movie would not play. In Kaffeine, I got an error stating that the NAV could not be found. The original DVD plays in Kaffeine, so I know that libdvdcss is is installed. What needs to be done in order to successfully copy a newer DVD? Is there a deeper level of encryption beyond CSS?

I'm running UNR 10.04 (fresh install) on a new Acer Aspire1 250 and just cannot get encrypted DVDs to play at all (as far as I can tell), using any media-player software.I'm having the most luck so far with xine (it is at least properly playing a DVD that I think must not be encrypted), so I'd like to start with trying to get xine working.
Details:
Running xine-ui 0.99.5+cvs20070914-2.1
I have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, libdvdnav4, libdvdread4, libdvdcss2, gstreamer-plugins-bad, gstreamer-plugins-ugly.
I'm using a LaCie external DVD to (try to) play these. After inserting the DVD, I start up xine, which will play usually a brief introduction to the DVD (like the FBI warning, studio logo, maybe start up the menu) and then crash, giving the error message:
Code:
The source can't be read.
Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source
doesn't contain data (e.g.: not disc in drive).
(/media/GOODWILL/VIDEO_TS/VTS_06_1.VOB)
The last line of course varies with the DVD, and there are many of these messages (one per track, I think). Like I suspect, does this mean that xine doesn't realize that libdvdcss2 is there (or some codec)? If so, how do I tell it where to look?

I have libdvdcss2 installed (it might not be working properly, but it is installed) My DVD reader is set to region 2The DVDs I'm testing with are store-bought region 2 discs
The test DVDs play fine on a standalone player and a Windows laptopNow the problem: This machine (a Dell T3400, very boring) was upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04.1 64-bit to Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit a couple of month ago. Before the upgrade I was able to play and rip encrypted DVDs successfully using VLC and dvd::rip.
After the upgrade neither playing nor ripping works reliably. Some DVDs will play in VLC, but a lot will stop halfway through or close to the end of a track. I've not been able to rip any encrypted DVD at all. Usually dvd::rip will get a failure when it runs lsdvd to read the DVD's table of contents. If it gets past that it will inevitably freeze up part of the way through ripping a track.
I've booted the machine back into 8.04.1 64-bit from a USB key and verified that I can still play and rip DVDs that will not work in 10.04, so it doesn't seem like a hardware problem. As I say above, the DVDs work fine in other players and machines. The failures seem to be related to a libdvdcss seek error:
libdvdcss error: seek error
libdvdread: Can't seek to block 4072713
libdvdread: Invalid IFO for title 23 (VTS_23_0.IFO).
[code]....
The block number will be different with different discs/tracks but it's usually some variation on this. I initially thought it might be this problem: [URL] but that patch seems to have been merged in ages ago. The attached logs show my attempts to run vlc, lsdvd and dvdbackup on both 8.04.1 (hardy.log) and 10.04 (lucid.log) with the same DVD ("The Shield", season 4 disc 3). As you can see there are a lot of errors logged by libdvdread3 on 8.04.1, but it does work eventually. No such luck on 10.04.
In case it matters, the DVD reader is one of these:
description: DVD-RAM writer
product: DVD+-RW AD-7200S
vendor: Optiarc
physical id: 1

I have tried to play mp3 files with sox play.
The result I get is:
play FAIL formats: no handler for file extension `mp3'
I have installed all libsox packages I could find, including libsox-fmt-mp3 and libmad0.
sox -h though, gives me:
AUDIO FILE FORMATS: 8svx aif aifc aiff aiffc al amb amr-nb amr-wb anb au avi avr awb cdda cdr cvs cvsd cvu dat dvms f32 f4 f64 f8 ffmpeg flac fssd gsm gsrt hcom htk ima ircam la lpc lpc10 lu m4a m4b maud mp4 mpg nist ogg prc raw s1 s16 s2 s24 s3 s32 s4 s8 sb sds sf sl sln smp snd sndfile sndr sndt sou sox sph sw txw u1 u16 u2 u24 u3 u32 u4 u8 ub ul uw vms voc vorbis vox wav wavpcm wmv wv wve xa
PLAYLIST FORMATS: m3u pls
AUDIO DEVICE DRIVERS: alsa ao oss ossdsp pulseaudio
(no mp3 mentioned there).
The reason I try to play mp3 files with sox is that I wanted to play a playlist with different formats and feed it to ices2 through a pipe, ie :
sox Musik/storlista.pls -t raw - | ices2 ices-pcm.xml sox
FAIL formats: no handler for file extension `mp3'

I have Debian Jessie installed. When I insert a non-encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, a pop-up menu appears asking me what I want to do (e.g. "Open with vlc media player, etc.).
When I insert an encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, no pop-up menu appears.
I am able to play the encrypted movie DVD in vlc, and libdvdcss2 is installed. So my question is not about playing the DVD but rather about the failure to automatically detect it.
This behaviour happens in Gnome, Mate, and XFCE. (KDE has a Plasma Device Notifier Widget that is able to detect the encrypted DVD).
My other computer with Debian Wheezy is able to automatically recognize the encrypted DVD.
Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after the insertion of the encrypted DVD:
Code: Select allJun 21 14:52:04 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2012.208964] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE

Whan I run the mount command after inserting the non-encrypted DVD the following line appears in the output:
Code: Select all/dev/sr0 on /media/daniel/Check Please type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=77,iocharset=utf8,uhelper=udisks2)
Granted, this issue is not a major problem as I can start vlc and play the DVD. However, it might be useful to some new users to Linux to have the pop-up menu appear. Additionally, it would be interesting to learn why it works in Debian Wheezy and not in Debian Jessie.

Here's a plugin that lets VLC from wheezy-backports play h.265 content. I packaged it for the MEPIS 12 repo, but it should work on wheezy. [URL] ....
Or create your own packages against Debian's stock VLC 2.0.3, that might work.
You need to install the libde265 package first, then the plugin package.
You can use the static ffmpeg binaries from ffmpeg.org to encode to that h.265 (hevc) codec, but it will take quite a while.
Code: Select all./ffmpeg -i [inputfile] -vcodec hevc [outputfile] Try mp4 or mkv for the output file extension.
The good news is that it will create video of the same quality that is half the size of a comparable h.264 file. This is handy for putting movies on space-limited storage, such as on a phone or tablet. I do know that MX Player on Android can play h.265 video.

I have been trying to play this game dawn-rpg.sourceforge.net and it immediately crashes whenever I try to play sounds. The only other sound in this system I have are the sounds for the bash/dash terminal.
So my questions are:-
a. How do I test if the sound system is working alright.
b. Do I need to increase some kind of priorty/niceness to sound systems to make sure they get the available resources (cpu, memory ) whatever it needs ?
On the same topic, while I was searching on the Net I got this link http://rosegardenmusic.com/wiki/low-latency_kernels .
I know this is actually for people who want to make sounds/music but can some of these ideas/instructions be useful for me as well ?

My wife and I each have 32 bit machines with two media drives and we're running Debian Squeeze with KDE4. If either of us put a commercial music CD in our primary drive (it's a CDROM drive on mine and an LG Super Multi drive on hers) Squeeze sees the music CD but can't play it. If either of us put a music CD in the secondary drive (Panasonic DVD/CD R/RW on mine and another LG Super Multi on hers) Squeeze sees the CD and KsCD plays it just fine however she can't see the files on the CD (in Dolphin) on her machine (though she can see the folders) while I can see the files just fine. My machine is a 1.8 GHz Athlon with 750 MB of RAM. Her's is a 2.4 GHz, triple core, Athlon II machine with 4 GB of RAM. Both are running pure Debian with no customizations.

I created a vmware workstation Debian 7 virtual machine from a debian-7.7.0-amd64-CD-1.iso.
I can play flash video streams from within the browser, i.e. YouTube plays fine. However, if I download a YouTube video, then try to play the flv file, it will not play from a media player.
I either get an "error cannot decode" or just a green screen during playback when using Totem or VLC. I've tried installing about every package out there, yet flv files will not play in any media players.
I also tried running the VM with and without 3d support. It won't play flv's either way.
Is this an issue between a vmware vm and Debian 7? Any success story playing flv files from within a Debian vmware virtual machine?

I noticed that Firefox won't play HTML5 videos, or better said, the sites always return a Flash video instead the HTML5 version. So either I install Flash or I can't play videos.
However, with Iceweasel I don't have this problem. The sites always load with a HTML5 video instead of the Flash version. So no need to install Flash.
I checked plugins, extensions and even the user-agent string to see if there is some indication Iceweasel is using and Firefox don't, but I don't see anything special, so... how is it possible that using Iceweasel the sites load HTML5 video, but using Firefox the sites tend to use Flash?
I know that in Debian there is no need of installing Firefox, but right now I'm trying other distros and that's where I noticed about this problem. Then switched to my Debian installation and installed Firefox, and checked the same happens in Debian. Just for the record, in Windows it doesn't need Flash either.
