Apr 23, 2010KDM starts up fine, graphics drivers (fglrx) are loaded correctly, but as soon as I login over KDM and KDE desktop starts loading, X crashes, restarts KDM, and I get sent back to the login screen.I am running a stock debian/lenny install (with 2.6.26-686 kernel) and no error messages in my Xorg.0.log.

Sep 14, 2010I am running debian unstable on my netbook lenovo s10-3t. after updating system yesterday i can't login. when i turn laptop on i get gdm login screen. when i enter my username and password it is loading for 30 seconds or so and then i get back to login screen. alt+ctrl+Fn doesn't work after that (but works before). there is no errors in x server log (cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE gives nothing). in xsession-errors there is something about "_Polkit". also before fatal io error 11 i have nautilus-gdu extension going to be initializing. i tried to remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf and get new by X -configure, but there was no change in behaviour of gdm. i also tried to add new user, but again, no changes.

May 28, 2015I recently installed Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment. I don't like the background in the login screen and want to change it. After some Googling I discovered that the path to the background is stored in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.
Unfortunately, whenever I change the background field I'm left with a black background during login. (Yes, I triple checked that I spelt the path correctly). Does the login background have to meet some criteria I don't know about, like being a certain resolution?

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome Crashes On Login
Jun 22, 2015I was using Debian (jessie) testing for quit a while now, and since jessie is now the new Stable I wanted to update to testing again.
And I have an issue now, and I can't tell if it is a really a bug, or some new packages are interfering with my configuration files. Well to be honest I have more than one issue, but I am guessing that at least a few of them are related to the same issue.
Whenever I startup my Debian(testing) system, I get the gdm3 login prompt, I type in my password and hit Enter. Than there is a: “Oh no, something went wrong”-window for an blink of an eye (1-2 seconds).
After that gnome starts (almost*) normal .[gnome version 3.16.2]
*But: the gnome-sound applet doesn't start correctly. Alsamixer is running but Pulseaudio seems not to. When I start Pulseaudio manually after that everything with the sound is fine.
The most annoying thing is, that none of my Shortcuts work anymore ( Ctrl+Alt+T for terminal, Ctrl+<anything; Fn+<anything> screen brightness for example; hardware Volume Up/Down keys [Thinkpad x230t])
I checked my costume Shortcuts, Ctrl+Alt+T is set in the keyboard settings.
I have two monitors connected (its a laptop so it the build in and an external). I tried to disconnect the 2nd monitor and restartet the problem persists . Everything else seems to work fine (at least I haven't found any other issue yet). I would be glad to add some Log files, but I don't know exactly which one I should attach.
I attached the Xorg-log since it seems to me that something went wrong there:

This instance of iceweasel only applies half of the gtk-theme, which i set via the mate-control-center.
The main problem is that the text in the right-click menu and on inactive tabs has the wrong colour (dark text on dark background)
When closing this instance of iceweasel and opening another one, the gtk-theme is correctly applied.
Installed gtk-theme-switch and set the theme there, now it works as expected

May 23, 2015I want to set up the GDM login screen in vertical orientation = left = (xrandr -o 1) due to my monitor.
I used Ubuntu and the below method has been working until I switched to Debian8 now.

Since I have configured my x rortation only be xrandr command by shell init script, and never had configured by GUI setting, the monitors.xml was not created. When I done with GUI, the file is created as usual.
Then I copied to
/var/lib/gdm3/.config/monitors.xml
Finally works as expected.

System is stuck on logon 'GDM' screen without possibility to login for any user including 'root'. Apr 7, 2016I have a laptop connected via HDMI port to different external displays throughout the day. I have configured the displays (Settings > Displays) to turn off the laptop display and set the external display as primary. However, this setting only takes effect after login. Thus, I am unable to see the login screen greeter on my external display because I close the laptop lid, so I am logging in blindly to a gray login screen background.
he issue I am facing is that when I start the laptop with an external display connected, the greeter only appears on the laptop display. The gray login screen background image spans both laptop and external displays and my mouse pointer appears on both displays, so I know both displays are detected and configured as dual displays. But, I am guessing, the laptop display is set as primary while the external as secondary.
I would like to know if there is a way to dynamically switch the greeter between the two displays, regardless of which one is set as primary and secondary. Or, is there a way to configure the system such that if there is an external display connected via HDMI, then it is set as primary, and if no external display is connected, then the laptop display is set as primary?
I have searched all over the net and this forum to no avail. I read a post which required copying the user's ~/.config/monitors.xml file over to /var/lib/gdm/.config/ but this caused my laptop monitor to be turned off at login even when there was no external display connected.
Hardware: Acer Aspire 8730G, Core 2 Duo T9900, 8GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT.
Software: Debian 8.4 Jessie, Gnome 3.14.1, Gallium 0.4 on NV96 (I am assuming this is the Nouveau driver)

Jul 29, 2010Using squeeze here. Until recent updates to xserver, my numlock worked as expected, but now the damn thing won't stay on anymore. Numlockx is still broken as it's always been for me in that it turns the numlock on but not the led on the keybord. I'm using slim as a login manager which everytime it's updated they set the numlock option to disabled for whaterver reason, but then that doesn't work if I enable it anyway (why have it?). So what is it with debain/(Linux) and their obsession with disabled numlocks at login, I don't get it?

I have been unsuccessfully attempting to change my personal login avatar, following the advice on the Arch Linux wiki: [URL] .... I began by naming my desired avatar .face and saving it in my home directory. That didn't work, but I was not discouraged because the wiki mentioned that there were issues with the ".icon method". So I then installed accountservice, created a directory for my user, and saved my desired avatar as a 96x96 PNG named username.png in the appropriate directory (making sure that it had the necessary permissions, of course). That didn't work either...

Feb 10, 2011I have a problem with mouse and keyboard. Both freeze within 30sec to half an hour after logging into squeeze 64bit (using gnome). My hardware is Asus P7P55D EVO (tested with linux according to ASUS) with Intel i5 760 CPU. I use IBM keyboard and Trust PS2 mouse. I also have MSI HD4350 graphics card, that was at least listed on Ubuntu to be supported, worked fine also with Lenny.
When using same combination with Lenny (64-bit) I never found any problem with either keyboard nor mouse, even running long nights. However there was need to upgrade to Squeeze since it has newer kernel supporting the sensors on board my MB. I used same mouse and keyboard also on Ubuntu 9.10 and had never problems. However when I upgraded to new MB I started with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit version and experienced same keyboard and mouse freeze as I have now in squeeze. Only way out from this status is hard reset using PC reset button.

Mar 26, 2011I'm running an LMDE install, but with the Sid repositories.Everything has been fine until yesterday's updates, after which I can't boot normally. The boot hangs at the login screen, and nothing works - not the mouse, the keyboard, the touchpad, nothing, and it requires holding the power switch to get out. I can boot to a root recovery console, but networking doesn't work at all there. I can run startx there and get an X desktop as root, and networking still doesn't work. No wireless, no ethernet, no nothing. From the recovery console I can run shutdown, and when prompted for a password, can enter Ctrl-D, which immediately drops me back to X, to the normal login screen, which now works normally, and I get a normal X session in which everything works. This is the same for all installed kernels, including 3 versions of the Liquorix kernel and the standard Squeeze kernel. It would appear to be something in my settings in /home, but I can't find anything that looks suspicious. I ran smxi again after booting through the root console, without any improvement.

Mar 27, 2015I just completed a fresh install of the weekly jessie build (downloaded today). All I've done is install updates, add my username to sudoer list, and reboot. When I did, the xfce panel was not there. When I right clicked, Apps, Panel, it opened with an error that I cannot make changes unless I save my session and that it's in kiosk mode. After a logoff or reboot, it's still not there. I saw one thread asked for the output of /.xsession-errors, which I've done, and it doesn't look good... I'm just not sure how to fix:
