I have just setup a new server whith a host who only provide the hardy distro of ubuntu. I want to upgrade it to at least jaunty, however after upgrading from 8.04 to 9.04, it requires a restart and after it restarts i can no longer connect to it at all. I'm fairly certain it must be reconfiguring the firewall to prevent all access on reboot.

Debian Installation :: Upgrade Etch To Lenny: No Version Bump, Auto-start Services?

Feb 24, 2010

On my debian web server I curently have ImageMagick 6.3.7 08/07/09 Q16 since this is an old version of imagemagick i wanted to upgrade my system that still runs etch, and afterwards upgrade imagemagick. I can not see what version the current lenny imagemagick package has, but I assume it is newer then 6.3.7, no?

When i ugraded I found out that my apt-sources used stable rather than etch. So I already had a mix of lenny and etch I suppose. I then had > cat /etc/debian_version 4.0 Before I upgraded I changed my apt sources from stable to etch, updated the package-tools and did a dist-upgrade (for details, I followed these instructions). After restarting I have still 4.0 as debian version. Also uname -r is 2.6.17. How can I do a correct update?.

Also my services were not started (ftp, ssh, apache2), so I asked my hoster to start the ssh service. This morning everything was up again, but it seems like nobody there have had a look at this. How do I absolutely ensure that my ssh service is start at boot. It is a remote webserver, so I need at least this service to be running.

Debian Hardware :: Use The I386 Version On Computer Rather Than The I686 Version?

I installed debian squeeze on an old computer that I found. (Pentium 4 3.2GHz HT) I installed from the i386 version, but now the uname command shows that its an i686. I don't find many packages that I need using apt-get. Do I need to compile each package I need from source or use dpkg to install the deb of an i386 version?

Can I use the i386 version on this computer rather than the i686 version? Will it cause a signifncant performance decreaes? (I use this computer to mostly do some reading and writing and file storage, no gaming etc.) How do I force the installer to use the i386 version?

Debian Configuration :: Samba - Cannot Access Server After Upgrade

Mar 12, 2016

Following yesterday's and then today's upgrade of my Debian 8 32-bit system (among other things to samba 2:4.1.17+dfsg-2+deb8u2 (yesterday: ...deb8u1)) I cannot connect my Mint 17.3 laptop to the server anymore. Were there any changes to smb.conf regarding authentication or other aspects that might lead to this problem? I am enclosing part of my smb.conf. By the way - I also have trouble using ssh to connect to the Debian machine, such as the ssh-command taking "for ever" and then getting the message "Write failed: Broken pipe" when entering an ls-command on the command line.

Debian :: Cannot Join Server To AD With Samba After Upgrade To Squeeze

Sep 15, 2010

A very strange thing happened to me today after upgrading a Lenny server to Squeeze. All seems to be working great except for the fact that I cannot join the server to our domain (made a work copy of the virtual machine holding Debian, upgraded that, renamed and changed IP).

The problem I'm having is related to Samba as far as I can tell. On the Lenny server(s) I have the 'net' command to join a server to a domain but not on the upgraded version (Squeeze). It just says command not found and there's indeed no 'net' in /usr/bin where it's supposed to be.

I imagine that something went wrong upgrading Samba although the rest works, the daemons are running, kerberos works (kinit, klist), and so on, I only miss the net command.

Is there a way to install that separately or which package do I have to reinstall (samba-common, sambafs, ...)?

I have other servers (clean install and upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze) that do have the command in /usr/bin. Can I just copy it over from one to another or do I have to remove and reinstall Samba all together?

Debian :: Dedi Server Don't Reboot After Wheezy / Jessie Upgrade

Jul 26, 2015

I have upgraded my debian server on april when Jessie came up, but I *forgot* to reboot at this time. As a new kernel* was released this week as a security update, and since my server installed it (via unattended-upgrade on security packages), I rebooted it last night. It never came back online.

I have access to a rescue boot (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS), and tried to analyse the failure (by mounting /sys /dev /proc and /boot and chrooting), but without luck so far.

As it's a dedicated server, I don't have access to the console. What I know :

No log in var/log since the failed reboot. I don't know how to have/find others logs.Previous kernel was 3.2.0-4-amd64, new is 3.16.0-4-amd64, What I tried without luck) :

Change the booting kernel, via update-grub. Tried 3.2, 3.2 with sysvinit and 3.16 rescue mode I think. I should have done it right, but without console it's hard to tell.apt-get update/apt-get upgrade/apt-get dist-upgradeadding nomodeset to kernel load in grubWhat I haven't tried :

update-initramfs, I don't really know why it would block the boot
