Debian Configuration :: Online Resizing Of Encrypted Lvm?

When I installed Debian on this machine, I went with guided partitioning, encrypted lvm, and Debian defaulted to a 10GB / partition. I figured, hey, defaults are there for a reason, so left it alone.
Now that I need to shrink my /home and extend /, I'd like to do so as easily as possible. I installed system-config-lvm, read its man page ( which is really just a long description of the program, not much instruction ) and fired it up. Won't let me resize ( shrink ) /home, said files are in use.
Is there a way to use the nice pretty graphical tool, or do I need to boot to a non-X-using runlevel and log in as root, then muck about with CLI tools like lvresize and resize2fs?

I have Debian and Virtual Box with another Debian. I have resized max size of vdi file with VBoxManage modifyhd but now I need to resize partition on virtual machine's system. I've downloaded GParted and I can run machine from this ISO as CD. Partition is encrypted on machine.Unfortunately GParted doesn't start with X so I have to use it in terminal. I can see partitions:

So I check my internet connection. VirtualBox has 'attached to NAT' and before I run out of space on virtual machine, Debian could access internet. So it's only something about this GParted. I have modified /etc/resolv.conf with vi (even vim is not available). And it has two valid nameservers. I haven't restarted anything, as I'm not sure if I need to, after modifying resolv.conf file.But even in that case I cannot ping anything from GParted:

Is there a way where I can take like 50GB from my home folder (I have 375 avail., but using only 22GB) and put it to the root partition? Twice now my system has almost ran out of space on root, so luckly I was able to clear out old stuff so I don't have login issues after finding the hardway the first round lol. I just want to make sure I can login with out being forced back out because root don't have space to let me login.

I'm trying to get my simple home web server on the internet but I cannot seem to make it work. I've set up a LAMP stack to host my website and it works perfectly on my local network (accessing from [URL].. but not from the internet. To test it for now before I set up a dynamic dns service, I am trying to access my website via my WAN IP address from within and outside of my home network (ie http://69. When I do this, I get a "taking too long to respond" message, instead of a host not found or 404 or something of that nature. My box has a pentium 4, 2 gigs of ram, and is on a DSL line so I have a hard time believing anything is "taking too long". Here are the software packages I've installed:
-ssh
-apache2
-php5
-mysql
-phpmyadmin
-proftpd
-mediatomb
All of these packages work perfectly fine from within my home LAN, but NONE work outside of my network.
Other configs:
-My router forwards traffic on port 80 to my server
-My iptables allow incoming traffic on port 80
-My ISP, AT&T, does not block port 80 (or any port, according to various online sources)
Perhaps Apache is not configured correctly? What apache config options would be related to this problem?
I've previously tried a similar setup with the dyndns service fully configured (I followed a very thorough guide down to the t - wish I had the link it was excellent), but to no avail - I got the same "too long to respond" accessing from my domain name. I understand that there are a multitude of causes for this problem, so what can I do to narrow down the source? "How to set up a LAMP server" guide, because all of them have lead me to where I am now.

My root partition was filling up, with only 500 mbs left, I wanted to resize my root partition from 20 Gb to 40Gb
So I resized my partition by using these steps:
Using Gparted to resize another partition to give space for the EXT4 Using fdisk, deleting the root partition (on /dev/sda2), and creating it again using the new size resize2fs /dev/sda2 Updating grub2
But now the problem is that although I can boot in my new partition and the new partition shows it is 40Gb, but the free size was still 500mb. So I booted from a LiveCD and checked with e2fsck -p /dev/sda2, it reported clean. So I added the -f flag (force check), still, the drive is full.

Is it possible to put the ISO images for Debian on your system and point the APT config at them with some sort of driver to read them like disks? That would sure save a lot of disk swapping.

Debian encrypted LVM disappears every time on sda when I install any other also encrypted Linux distro on sdb.
How can I set up Debian that way that it wouldn't disappear or how can I recover it form UEFI?

I want to move my old system to a new drive. Currently I have Debian installed with following configuration:
I have an encrypted system where everything is encrypted except /boot. Currently I've /boot and / installed on a 16 GB mSata SSD and /home on a regulard HDD. I've got a 500GB SSD for Christmas and want to move the whole system to the new SSD.
I just wanted to ask if I've got the process required to to this down:
1. backup root-directory (/) without and /boot /home using tar keeping file-permissions and owners to ext. hard drive
2. backup /boot and /home separately using the same method
2. replace HDD with SSD remove mSATA SDD.
3. boot via live-usb
4. create appropriate volume groups, partitions, setup encryption etc.
5. extract backups to appropriate partitions
6. chroot to old /.
7. edit fstab
8. reinstall grub
9. create new init ram img.
I'm pretty sure I've got steps 1.-6. down but I'm very shaky on what to do next.

Is it better to install LUKS to raw disk (/dev/sdb) or disk partition (/dev/sdb1)? What are best LUKS options?

I use a static compiled kernel and a fully encrypted disk apart from a boot partition. I have recompiled and installed kernels many times. When I tried with the latest kernel from Testing, 4.2.6, the system will not boot. Not only that but the previous kernel now does not boot. However, a stock modular kernel does boot. The static kernel hangs at:

The luksOpen command asks me for my passphrase, but always rejects it. I have retried this several times and written down the passphrase - and even tried with a very simple one just to check. And I never can make it work.

I installed Ubuntu successfully using rescue mode on the alternate cd, and let Ubuntu use an internal boot and home. At the final stage grub refused to install to the MBR, and then refused to install to my /boot partition on /dev/sda2. It said: No boot loader has been installed, either because you chose not to or because your specific architecture doesn't support a boot loader yet. You will need to boot manually with the /vmlinuz kernel on partition /dev/mapper/volumegroup-natty and root=/dev/mapper/volumegroup-natty passed as a kernel argument. Returning to debian, I did a update-grub, which detects Windows and Ubuntu:

how can I set the keyboard layout used by Debian to enter the password of my encrypted filesystem?
After my recent "aptitude upgrade", I have not been able to mount my encrypted filesystem anymore. I have discovered that the keyboard layout used to enter the password has changed. Problem is that with such layout I can't enter some of the characters composing the password. The encrypted filesystem looks intact, since I have been able to mount it and backup my files by means of a live CD. That means that I can edit any system file, if needed.
Every technique I have found to change layout cannot be employed in this case, since they rely on the system being up and running. I've tried editing /etc/default/keyboard, but that does not work.

maybe this is something extremely simple and my brains are just mush after a whole night of struggling (and succeeding) with wifi driver issues.i'm running a brand new 10.10 netbook on a brand new asus eee 1015. i am trying to set up my email in evolution and the evolution windows are larger than the netbook screen, which means that the OK, SAVE, etc buttons are outside reach. i tried to resize, move window - resizing doesn't work and it only moves horisontally, not vertically.

I have an encrypted partition which shows up in Dolphin file browser.But as a non-root user, I cannot unlock and mount it. A message in Dolphin comes up saying that a policy prohibits this. As root, this unlocking of the encrypted partition goes normally. I cannot find the setting to change in KDE perhaps;

I'm having an issue with Gnome panel, the window list applet isn't resizing to accomodate more windows. I have my panel situated so that the window list applet is on the top left and the menu list applet is in the top right. Instead resizing to be smaller in order to accomodate more windows, the window list applet pushes the menu list applet under it and continues to the right. I recently upgraded to lenny and with I'm assuming Gnome panel 2.20.3. I didn't have this issue before the upgrade. I've looked through and tried the options in the preferences and also a little bit in th config editor but with no luck.

I used gparted in PartedMagic to resize my /home partition from 360GB to 160GB, and create a new FAT32 partition out of the remaining 200GB.My /home directory only had about 9GB worth of files in it and as far as I can tell there was no reason for any of them to be anywhere near the portion which was deleted. So the resizing and creating the new partition seemed to go fine. Then I rebooted and it got stuck while booting into Debian.
I tried checking my BIOS for an IOMMU option but there doesn't seem to be one at all. I also only have 4GB of RAM so I don't know why it thinks I have 4.75GB.

I just bought a new HP desktop, and I want to install Debian on the hard drive. I ran the Windows program on the Debian CD to start the install.
I selected Manual drive setting, and resized the large C: partition to 50 GB. I want to install Debian in some of the free space, only their isn''t any free space! The 400+ GB I took out of the C: partition is labeled "unusable" instead of "free space."
If I double click the unusable space, I am just given the cylinder/head/sector numbers. How I can make that space usable?
I would boot my Gparted CD, but I don't know how to get to the BIOS. The boot screen goes right to Windows without showing me the key to get to the BIOS. I tried hitting DEL, but to no effect. Do you know what the HP computers use to interrupt the boot?

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on my laptop with the entire 500gb setup as encrypted LVM. This has worked well for several months with no problems. During this time i have been backing up the data to an external usb drive (1tb) on a regular basis. The usb drive was not encrypted. So, I thought it would be a good idea to encrypt the backup drive too. I wiped out the backup drive and set it up as one large encrypted lvm and mbr. This seemed to work fine but immediately afterwards I decided to erase that and set it up as encrypted lvm guid instead of mbr. I couldn't delete it while logged into my desktop so i decided to do it from a bootable gparted usb stick. In gparted i erased the 1TB backup drive once again and planned on setting it up the way I wanted once I was logged back into my ubuntu desktop. Now I cant boot into my desktop with the following errors:
cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available b0d) does not begin with /dev/mapper/
Then after waiting for a few minutes I get an error followed by (initramfs)
When booting from a live version of ubuntu the 250MB boot patition is recognized and 500 partion is there but it is labeled as empty/unused.
Also, I did choose to use the exact same passphrase as what is used on the main bootable drive when I set up the encrypted partition on the external 1TB drive.

I've just started using ubuntu one. However, some of the files I store on there are sensitive so I encrypt them using seahorse. Right click, encrypt etc etc. My question is, is there a way to automatically get the encrypt process to delete the un-encrypted file when it makes the new encrypted copy?

I accidentally deleted one of the libraries in /lib or /usr/lib and now when I boot into Debian, it won't load the GUI. I get an error message saying that something failed because the library needed did not exist (I couldn't read it because the text was scrolling by so fast, so I don't know exactly what it said). I need to find an archive or something of all the system libraries for Lenny so I can reinstall them. Is there a place online where I can download them?

I just installed ETQW 1.5 (Linux version), the game installed fine but strangely enough the 'Play Online' button is grayed out and therefor I can't play online. Anyone else who encountered this problem? Is there a solution?

Recently I set up a Debian server following this guide:
However I wasn't able to connect to the internet after the clean install of debian.
I found a fix:
Where x is a number not in use by any machine
Where y is the number on the gateway
These commands are appended to /etc/rc.d/rc.local and works fine.
The server is virtual and running on a vmware installation.
The problem, I have, appears randomly after the server has been startet. Sometimes after 20 hours and sometimes after 9 hours only.
I can't connect to the server through the web (server.mydomain.com). However I can reach my computer running vmware at (host.mydomain.com). In vmwares terminal window I can access the debian installation which is running all fine. No errors or so. I can even ping remote ip-adresses from the debian server without problems. Restarting the server fixes the problem. But it then re-appears after some time.

And noticed that since today (or mayby yesterday not entirly shure) the documentation speaks about "squeeze" and not "lenny" I am not sure if any other info is changed as well but i find it confusing. Is this an error?

I want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.
