General :: Safe To Delete Installed .tgz Packages?

Mar 8, 2011

i read somewhere (I think an article by AlienBob) that you needed to make sure .tgz packages where located in a safe place as opposed to the home directory so as to prevent accidental deletion.

I have a number of .tgz packages that I have already installed and moved to the /bin/ directory for safe keeping, but its not very orderly, ya' know?

Is it safe to delete/rm these .tgz files? Im assuming that the installpkg command extracts the creamy nougat inside and puts it somewhere useful.

Also, even if it is safe to delete, what is best practice in this case? keep them forever in some isolated directory?

Installation :: Dual CentOS - Windows 7 Boot - Had To Delete CentOS Partition And No Grub Menu

Sep 19, 2010

3 partitions (in order): Windows 7, CentOS and shared data partition.

I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).

GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).

Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.

Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?

CentOS 5 :: Get Centos To Recognize Updated Packages?

Jun 24, 2009

I have a copy of the DVD Iso for centos 5.3. I downloaded the updated packages to the Centos directory and then ran the repomanage perl script to remove the old files from the directory. I then ran the createrepo and the new iso image with the script code below.

baseDir=`pwd`
rhelBuild=`pwd`/dvd-iso-contents
rm -f CentOS_1.0.0.iso
echo "Updating repository"
dvd_discinfo=`head -1 $rhelBuild/.discinfo`
echo "$dvd_discinfo

[Code]...

I am using VMWare to test the build, so I have the cd pointing to the iso image. I get the CentOS to start up find and dandy asking the questions for the interactive boot. It gets thru the stage of checking dependencies and then when it starts to copy down the image to the "harddrive" that is when the problem occurs.

One of the updated files is file-4.17-15.el5_3.1.i386.rpm (file-4.17-15.el5.i386.rpm was removed using repomanage), but the loader is looking for the removed file. I've looked thru any dependencies, but nothing specific for the removed file, all are asking for /usr/bin/file with no specific version numbers. I have run a rpm -test on all the rpms, but haven't been able to look thru that to see if there is a specific request for the version.

I did try this, but it just moved on to the next file. I did not replace the file version, but then it found another problem that was the same as this, the updated file is in the repo, but it is requesting the old version. I looked thru the fileslist and others to see if maybe that was the problem, but they were updated to the new versions.

CentOS 5 :: CentOS Installing Packages Did Not Select?

Dec 28, 2009

I've noticed this happen with every CentOS installation I've done in the past and it's confusing me. On the software template screen select, I always select "Server" and leave the extras option unchecked, I also check "Customise now". The only things I choose are the editors (to get vi), Web server and server configuration tools (and this time also Java). I didn't select any GUI programs, yet it still installs things like X, GNOME components and also samba. Why does it do that? There no way they're needed for dependencies. Is there something I'm missing when selecting the software components? Why does it still install samba when I didn't select it from under "Servers" components? Or have I misunderstood what software selection does and it installs all those components regardless but doesn't automatically turn the services on?

CentOS 5 :: How To Delete NBD Devices

Aug 15, 2011

I have created a number of network block devices that I would like to delete, but I have been unable to find any information to do this.

I am using Centos 5.6 and my kernel is 2.6.18-238.el5.

I have been searching the internet for two days now and have noticed some other UNIX systems do have utilities for deleting unwanted devices but nothing for linux.

I created these devices with the vmware supplied PERL script vmware-mount.pl which in turn calls mknod.

The commands would look like:

mknod /dev/nbd0 b 43 0
mknod /dev/nbd1 b 43 1
......

I have tried deleting them from /dev which works temporarily but they come back when I reload the nbd module i.e.

modprobe -r nbd
modprobe nbd

and also if I reboot.

There is a directory tree for each device under /sys/block and I'm guessing this is how /dev is getting repopulated. I cannot remove the directory trees from /sys/block. I get this when I try:

rm: cannot remove `nbd15/queue/iosched/slice_idle': Operation not permitted
rm: cannot remove `nbd15/queue/iosched/slice_async_rq': Operation not permitted
...... there are 25 lines like this ....

When I do a vgsan I see this:Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...

/dev/nbd0: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 0: Input/output error
/dev/nbd0: read failed after 0 of 4096 at 2199022141440: Input/output error

and in the messages log I see this:

Aug 15 21:04:06 udon-desktop kernel: nbd15: Attempted send on closed socket
Aug 15 21:04:06 udon-desktop kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev nbd15, sector 0

Then, when I run 'yum check-update' it says there are packages being excluded. I would have thought that before I had installed the 3rd party repo - that nothing should be excluded? Especially with everything set to the same priority. On a side note - this is a Xen VPS that we are renting... and the providors have commented out the [base] section (#[base])... I'm assuming this is is OK and is for my own protection.
