I want to say hello for all as it is my first post. I have CentOS 5 I recently changed my root password. When I try my new password it doesn't work. For changing password first I connected using ssh connection I logged in. Then typed on shell passwd then the system asked me "new password" then asked "type it again" at the end I got successful message.
View 2 RepliesI was trying to edit a file requiring root permissions, so I used sudo. I typed the root password and it failed. This happened three times, and the process was ended. I then logged in as root (su) and was able to navigate to the file and make changes as root. Am I missing something? How would I edit the sudoers file such that this password would work? Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using rhel 5, when i'm working in terminal first i typed su command and by mistake i entered copy command and some other characters, after realising i've made a mistake then i came out and continued with copy command in terminal.
after some time when i tried to login by using su and with password it says "incorrect password". So i logged out and entered root login for gui and it works well, but i'm not able to use the same password for su. can some one get around this issue?
I'm trying to install Skype on an Aspire One netbook, it shows the file in the downloads section but every time I click on it it asks for an administrator password. If I put this in the window closes and then comes up asking for it again a few seconds later, but if I put in the wrong password it gives me the option of changing it, but still won't allow me to run the programme

Everything worked like always but in the setup instead of typing in a root password as asked to i just pressed enter (in the hope of not having to type in a pw in the console later, just having to press enter then)
When i needed rootpw to install some software (using SoftwareDownloader) the normal loginpw seemed to work, but not in the console.

sometime ago i have setup a nice Debian FTP server. and left the company. everything was working fine for about 5 month, administrator was able to login to root, do changes and manage system, etc. Suddenly he told me that he cannot login via PUTTY, the root user and pass say Access Denied.Looked all over the web for at least a REASON, but did not find anything. I suggested to go and do passwd reset, via runLevel 1. i hope this helps him. But i am still curious why all of the sudden, in a locked down room, where only one person has access root get disabled.

How can I change the root password? I get a graphical Grub at startup and if I press "e" nothing happens. Is there a different way to have Grub boot in text mode? I needed to check up on it today and my root password would not work. I am absolutely sure I did not forget my password and because I am the only Linux guy in the office I am sure some nimrod didn't get his fingers in the machine. I attempted to enter GRUB recovery mode but when I hit ESC it says something about no disk and goes into the booting process. I attempted to use a desktop version live CD, but the file structure is unreadable, I assume due to the security of the server system. Before I rebooted it the server worked fine, Apache and PHP were working away. Now the whole thing is a 50Lb boat anchor. How can I reset the password when I cannot enter GRUB menu or use a live CD?

I forgot the root passwd for linux (via the "single" mode) and, according to all confirms, did so successfully! I then try to log on to Centos as root, and I can't....it says "incorrect passwd"! So then I log on as another, regular, but not root, user, with that passwd, and boot up into Centos. if I try to "su" to root, with the new root passwd, again it says its incorrect. there is no "system admin" passwd set. I checked!. I need root access within Centos!

I've modified the kernel line using Single, S, and 1 but it appears that these commands are being totally ignored as the server continues with the boot process and displays the GUI logon screen. Problem: When I disconnect this drive, the system will not boot. Gives me the "enter password for root" or click control+D to continue. How can I get around this check - if the disk fails to load, or have been taken out.

When I rebooted with my new root username, i was instead recognised as a simple user (no root privileges). I tried the console to change to "old" root but root password is not accepted and there is no way to access to sudoer files. it seems that inserting a new username requires root privileges and i am back to square one. Simply logging with old root username and password after restart gives me a blank screen with nothing on it and cannot even reboot.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI edited fstab to automatically mount my windows data partition on boot, but I screwed it up by not specifying the file system type, however that is not the problem, I was able to fix that easily. The problem was that when it failed to mount the partition, Debian automatically entered root and I guess that is to be expected in order for me to fix it, but I never configured a root password and it just gave me full root access without asking any password, not even my user password. I though that was strange so I set the root password and sure thing it asked me for the root password this time without automatically logging into root....
I then tried to lock the root account to see if it will ask me for a password or not, it did but of course I wasn't able to login as root because it was locked now and I was left with no way to access the system. I had to fix fstab from a live cd so that I can login normally as the user....
I didn't know what to search for or if that is the expected behavior if you don't set root password during installation, but it just seemed a bit strange to automatically enter root when you specifically disable root login during installation...
A friend of mine has told me to set a root password and use root (f.e. switching to su in terminal and work with root rights instead).Is there any way to unset the root password? I know how to use sudo now.
