CentOS 5 :: Call Manually "Update Manager"?
Jul 31, 2010
Occasionally a dialog pops up with the title "Update Manager". It offers me to update system components. However this popup occurs automatically. I wonder how I can call/start this "Upate manager" (dialog)manually? I found no menu entry. When I click on menu Application->Add/remove Software then a "Package Manager" is shown which is different from the "Update Manager". So again the question: How can I start manually (from terminal or menu) the "Update Manager"?

Some while ago I decided to add Firefox repository directly through terminal. (Idea born when I saw in one old page (yes, never look for info in old pages ) "tutorial" how to do it.) The whole idea was simple: just add one line in terminal.The line was like this:sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stableBut since that, when I try to update through update manager I get errors:Quote:
W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net lucid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY D45DF2E8FC91AE7E
W: GPG error: http://archive.canonical.com lucid Release: The following signatures couldn't

I have the following line in my fstab:
Code:
//192.168.0.242/websites /mnt/supercube cifs rw,user=XXX,pass=XXX,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,uid=XXX 0 0
But it doesn't auto mount with everything and disconnects whenever I suspend my computer. The only way to get it to mount is with
Code: sudo mount -a and it mounts fine with no error.
Did lucid change the way it uses fstab or something? Obviously writing mount -a isn't a huge concern, but it kind of destroys the point of putting it in my fstab.

I am having issues with Update Manager after cancelling an Update.The Update Manager shows a number of required updates, but when I click on Install Updates... Nothing happensWhen I launch sudo dpkg --configure -a in a terminal I receive the following message:dpkg: status database area is locked by another process.On another forum i saw something regarding a gksu.lock file that needed to be deleted... but I can't find any such file....If I try to launch update manager via a terminal: sudo update-manager I get the following error:

I have configured a kickstart file where it will ask for the hostname, ipaddress and so on from the user and will proceed further.But I would also like to detect the keyboard, mouse and language and provide it to the user so that he can select the required options.Do I have to call any existing CentOS scripts from ks.cfg file?or if any one has developed any scripts or can any one give me any inputs for it.

Desperation has set in and hence you get to view a thread with this title. I think the title explains it all. Or, what can be done when packages are no longer available through the repository but installing them from RMP is boarder line crazy.

I recently converted my old laptop to Ubuntu a couple days ago and I'm loving it! This is my first post, but I've been reading the Ubuntu forums which have been helpful for tweaking little things and I'd say I've graduated from "absolute" Ubuntu/Linux noob to "almost total" noob in the last couple days (at least I know what the terminal is now!). On my regular PC, I'm a big fan of the Google Chrome browser, but for my Ubuntu machine, I was hoping to stay as true to the open source theme as possible, so while I do have Chrome installed too, I'd love to use Chromium as my primary browser.
The one drawback for me with Chromium vs. Chrome is that there are not automatic updates, but I wasn't able to find a clear, noob-friendly walk-through to set up a means to regularly update Chromium manually (either using the terminal or using the GUI). From what I understand, it would involve finding and installing Chromium build repositories, then checking and updating from those periodically.
The problem is that I don't really know how to go about doing any of this. How exactly does one add repositories? After they're added, how does one update from the Chromium builds located there? Are there any Chromium repositories for relatively stable builds versus the uber-newest test builds?
Am I completely off track and there's an easier way to set up a means to update Chromium?

My ISP is blocking medibuntu.org so that hasn't been updated on my machines since the end of April. I can still access it via proxy sites so is it possible to download certain files and place them on the right spots in my Ubuntu installation and have it tell me if something is out of date or not?

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Is there a method or way to "update" Vim's syntax highlighter manually? I appear to have a very updated version of Vim on both Debian & Arch Linux but I notice that on both servers on the identical configuration file for Postfix MTA (main.cf) I have a parameter that shows up in 'white' which usually means 1 or 2 things:
1. I have a typo somewhere in my parameter.
2. The parameter is not recognized by Postfix and useless
However in this case it is neither of the two above however it stands out in the configuration file because it's not in color. It's the only one that is white text. I verified the command / parameter is valid: Link
The parameter is:
Code:
smtpd_tls_security_level = may
Is there a way to update Vim to highlight the " smtpd_tls_security_level" parameter in the configuration file when opened with Vim? Do I need to update the syntax highlighter for this to have the desired effect? I know this issue is purely cosmetic but as an administrator I find it annoyong to have to waste time and research if a configuration parameter is valid or not. I rely on Vim's color syntax highlighting to tell me when I make a overlooked mistake. I do know that Postfix is happy with the current configuration as I can see it being executed in the program:
Code:
postconf -n | grep "smtpd_tls_security_level"
smtpd_tls_security_level = may

Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

I am trying to update using Update Manager and I get this message: Failed to fetch "Failed to fetch [URL]..404 Not Found" My system is 64 days out of date now.
I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.

Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

I have logged in today and update manager reminds me of an update with linx-backports-module-2.6.31-14-generic. However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Should i actually go ahead with the installation?
