i have a small issue, to make our network more secure, i now require outgoing email to require authentication. Now the problem..i have a automated mailer that does not have the option to authenticate. is there a way to allow a certain email address or the local network to send out without authentication? If i cannot do this for a single email user to allow them through with authentication, how would i remove the authentication paramaters in the postfix smtp..

I have setup a Linux Centos with apache server on it in a home network. Everything works fine. When I access the webserver I put in the address bar the IP address of the server which is 192.168.0.150 and when hit enter, it prompts the page where I have to put login information. The login information is set to: username: admin@localhost.local password: *************
It takes long time for authentication go through and load the page eventhough I am accessing the site in a same home local area network with fast ethernet connection. How can I change the localhost.local to something else like maybe [URL] instead and if I have to change settings in other files as well?
I am looking for a way via script to change a systems hostname and IP address!

I need to find a command-line program to randomly change my MAC address. I know on Ubuntu there is a program called 'macchanger'. And on Windows another one called 'macshift'. I just can't find one for CentOS 5.3 Enterprise Edition.
I installed the Centos 5.5 and after the Xen. After I put a virtual machine named VM01.Initially it worked properly, I tried everything and it worked.When rebooted, I had problems with the network.I have two network cards eth0 and eth1, but eth1 does not have any ip and I use only eth0.The error that appears is:

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.
after a yum update on my CentOS 5.3 I got this error when shutting down eth0 on reboot...

how I can define a local static IP address (so that I can run a web server off of the same IP, rather than letting my router DHCP it)?I've tried doing the YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings->Traditional Method with ifup->Set NIC to desired IP->Set Default Gateway to router address method, and afterwards I can't even get into my router anymore (not even responding to ping).

I would like to connect to some application on known IP and port in the internet from my LAN computer. However to do so (I have some application, not any administrative constraints or not being allowed to) I would like to use local addresses. So, let's say - I want to connect to the external host VV.XX.YY.ZZ, port AA using 192.168.EE.FF port BB. Baically so far I have limitation in my application (too many places for possible error, to correct it right now - will change it in future). Is it possible that after my application sends request to 192.168.1.EE port BB, my Linux transparently translates it to VV.XX.YY.ZZ:AA? I tried iptables tutorials and some forums, but nothing seems to be addressing this issue. I don't know if it's event possible with iptables but am pretty sure this should be possible.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI wouldn't call myself paranoid, but I do try to keep reasonably secure on my home network (WPA encryption, router firewall, etc.). I also occasionally use nmap to make sure I don't see any unknown computers logged into my network. The problem is I have five computers that all use DHCP on the network and they are not all up all of the time. At most, there are two to three online at any one time.
So, my question is: Do any of the IP addresses remain in the router's database for a computer that has gone offline (shutdown)?
The reason for my question is that today I ran nmap on my home network and noted an IP address that was not currently up on the network. It is, however, an address that is frequently assigned to one of the computers when it is online, but that address was not up at the time I ran nmap. Just trying to make sure my network is not being used by some nearby computer.
I recently setup motion on one of my computers with a USB camera. On that computer if I type [URL] I can see my live video. If however I type [URL] on that computer or any other on my wireless network, I get a page cannot be displayed. I checked that UFW was disabled and I am able to ping the motion computer from any other computer on my network. Also I am not sure if it matters but I do have apache installed on my motion computer as well. why I cant view my live video from different computers I am using Ubuntu 10.4 on all computers

I want to restrict the access to my local web server by IP address. Im in a LAN (192.168.200.xx) so i have this:

But when i try to connect from 192.168.200.4 it says i don't have permission to access
I added an init script numbered just before bind9 starts, which needs to see the ipv6 link-local address on eth0. Sometimes this address is not configured, yet. In all cases it eventually is configured.
I am unable to find any script that is configuring the ipv6 link-local address (which is in part based on the MAC address). Does anyone know if there is some script or program that is supposed to be doing this, or is it an internal kernel function?
One workaround I am considering is making this init script go into a loop around sleep 1 to keep checking for the ipv6 address. But I'm concerned this might cause some problems. Any suggestions? I don't want to let it move on to start bind9 until the configuration this script does (more ipv6 addresses) is done.
This is on Ubuntu 9.10 server (for which there is not a prefix choice).
I can reach other hosts by means of their global addresses by either the IP address or hostname (that has the global address). What I want to (also) do is have a hostname that references the IPv6 link local IP address (an AAAA record in DNS, or just the fe80::<whatever> address in /etc/hosts) and use that host name in commands to access that host. The problem is, an interface ID is needed when making such a reference.
It sure looks like the programs just pass the host name string on to the resolver library, which does not understand the significance of the '%' even though it could find and see that the name preceding the '%' is consistent with that being an IPv6 link local address (e.g. the logic could have been "split at first % and see if preceeding name is found as a link local address and accept that if so, or ignore the split otherwise" ... but it isn't). Is there a different syntax for this ... or was it overlooked in the design of programming around IPv6?I want to be able to address a host by its link local address, while still using a mnemonic instead of having to type the IPv6 address.

The emails usually come from legit places, usually hotels. Does this mean they are sending bad emails, i.e. they have a Trojan/worm, or is this a live hack attempt?. I believe the later, as I might get upto 3 domains from the one ip address, which is always, NOT associated with the listed domain. Not causing me any issues, except I have been getting a lot recently.
I am installing a cluster which is hidden from the rest of the world and there is no router either froma general login node. I would therefore require a local repository of the updates to CentOS5.4. When I checked I only found instructions for a full mirror. As I have no room and neither the human resources to setup and maintain a full-blown mirror, this is not a solution. However if I try to find updates for 5.4 to download in a repository-type of way I fail to find a solution. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places.

I have no problem getting a wireless connection when the laptop is booted in Windows XP. I also don't have a problem when booted under CentOS 5 and there is no authentication setup on the wireless router. I only have a problem when I setup authentication. The router wireless log shows the PC connectinng, authenticating, and succeeding authentication.I am using the Broadcom Hybrid-wl wireless driver.

The instalation went fine and initially I let DHCP work its magic. The router IP address ia 192.168.0.1 and all other VM's I have are granted dynamic ip address on this range (i.e. 192.168.0.x). However, the CentOS vm got an IP address that looks like it belongs on a different subnet :192.168.1.1
The VM (vmware desktop) network setting for this VM uses "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network". I can ping the host (Windows 7 64 bit) and the host can ping it (it been the VM) - but no other computer on the network can see it. To make things easier, I changed the network configuration to use a static IP address. Here are my configuration files:

I'm using crunchbang (jaunty) on an old desktop at home that I intend to use as an ssh server. I have everything set up and ready to go, I can ssh just fine if I'm on the same network (on my laptop) as the server, but when I tried remote access, I realized that I had the general IP (192.168.1.100) and that I needed to change the IP address to ssh remotely.I have tried to manually change the /etc/network/interfaces file but have only gotten confused.The question is what do I change and where in order to get a unique IP address for my ssh server to ensure a successful remote connection?
