I tried to kind of beautify my CentOS 5.3. So I kind of break some rules ( like compiling tar balls.. ). To cut it short, I installed avant window navigator ( source, compile, etc ). Before that I also installed compiz ( which made my desktop kind of much more *alive* ). Problem is there are some bugs on AWN, then I think my webcam got affected too ( not showing proper display ). I then decided to uninstall compiz thru YUM. After this, restarted my system, then whooppss my Gnome, won't load properly. the AWN was gone, then the bottom part of my desktop was just black. I only got a top menu, which whatever application I open there's no top bar on it ( where you see the name of the window ). Also every application just shows up on my upper left corner of the screen. So I definitely broke it. So I switched to another session ( Ctrl Alt F2 ) then went into a terminal. I tried to load again another X Session ( Ctrl Alt F8/F9 ), but nothing comes up, am I doing that wrong?
Now in cases like this where the GUI is not loading correctly, what work-arounds are usually made? I did some tweaks by guessing everything will kind of reset by renaming my gnome hidden folders, but no luck. What to do on this situations? Is it possible to kind of switch to pure terminal session, uninstall whole Gnome package there, remove some settings, reinstall Gnome and everything will be ok again? Or is it possible if Gnome is broke like kind of start a KDE session? How's this things relate to XOrg11.conf something? Could anyone just give like some overview like which sits on top of what.
Since I can't fix my problem yesterday I just reformatted laptop and reinstalled 5.3 with Virtualization checked, and I noticed my kernel says "xen". I thought of trying this builtin virtualization software because I had problems with VMWare before also.

I've got a 64-bit CentOS 5 setup and I'm trying to run startx, but when I do I get:
I tried changing the display driver to i810 in xorg.conf but it can't find that module either.

I am looking to create a user to be able to do WinSCP or SSH into the system and only be able to see /var/www/html/joomla/ and that is it. I don't want them to be able to start or stop service but be able to upload and download files to the specific directory or change privileges of the mentioned directory. Is that possible? what commands should I run.

Fatal server error:

Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at [URL] for help.

Problems with xen 3.1.2 creating and installing domU CentOS 5.5 I am trying to do a virt-install --prompt --paravirt, and the install error out while trying to download install RPMs. I have googled for xen centos virt-install and various permutations. I have found similar howtos for 5.4 and 5.3, but they resulted in the same outcome. I did find several posts with similar issues, but no solution was posted.[URL]..

As a long time FreeBSD user, I consider give Debian a try upon the arrival of my new laptop. However, seems I couldn't launch desktop environment by simply typing startx on console as on FreeBSD. I can start desktop through a display manager like lightdm on Stretch, which is quite easy and straightforward, but I still prefer the "startx way".
I setup Debian Stretch on Virtualbox (4.3.43) using official debian-installer, login as a normal user, and install xfce4 via Code: Select allsudo apt-get install xfce4. The installation of xfce4 was very fast and it also introduced xorg related packages here. Then I edit my $HOME/.xinitrc as follows:
Code: Select allexec startxfce4
I typed startx to expect Xfce desktop but got the errors complained instead: [URL]....
while the xorg.0.log had the following contents: [URL]....
So, I failed to start xfce4 by startx as a normal user and had to install and start lightdm to go into desktop, but when I login as root, it worked and launched Xfce4 by startx without any problem. I couldn't figure it out now.

- is there a way to set the default user in console login so that all needed is to press enter(or event without it) to be able to input the password for that user - also is it possible to console login without password, by just inputting user name and pressing enter how to put startx for that user right on login, so that the user doesn't input the command manually

I've got a Centos server setup as a web server and have no problems doing anything from the command line. Some users need to connect via FTP, and need to be able to chmod files and directories as they please. I've been able to allow the users to connect to the web directory via FTP, but can't work out how to allow them the ability to chmod anything within the folder. The files were originally uploaded by root user, however I want any user connecting via FTP to be able to edit permissions as they please.

This situation after a mains power failure took server down.Log oonto server with root, go to Admin > users and get this message:" The user database cannot be read. This problem is most likely caused by mismatch between /etx/password and /etc/shadow or /etc/group and /etc/gshadow. The program will exit now."

Because I keep a lot of data on a Netgear ReadyNAS which can be presented as a NFS server, I would like to have the default CentOS user have a uid and gid that match those for the user that owns the main NFS share. That way I can treat it as if it were a directory that I owned on the local machine. I'm probably going to install CentOS 5.3 over again to get a totally clean system. What is the neatest way to ensure that the default user has the desired uid and gid? Or is there a better way to work with the NAS? (Right now I'm running it with CIFS shares, but these are quirky and do not behave quite like a local file system, I'm hoping that NFS would be more consistent, but previously attempts to run NFS were hampered by different uid and gid values).

I've been trying to add a user to the system, so I can use it through samba to access the shares on the server. I'm using "useradd" but the command is not found... with a little search, I was able to find the command "/usr/sbin/useradd username" my question is can someone point me to a guide with basic administration task, I was checking out the wiki on Centos, but didn't find "adding user"; I know Centos has a gui for this, but I would like to stick to shell commands. By the way why some commands are only access through /sbin and others /usr/sbin. I know this probably has to do with your path, but how can I fix this so I don't have to type the whole path every time.

I have about 30 regular user profiles on my system all of which are identical, except yesterday the keyboard stopped working for one when the user starts X both KDE and Gnome, seems like it dosen't even detect the keyboard as num/caps lock light is no longer on. It works on the command line just fine though. Was working fine Friday, no settings were changed at all over the weekend just stopped working come Monday morning.
Works for all the other users on the system. I've reset his profile from the /etc/skel directory still won't work. It's a network login through NIS so tried it on several machines (Centos5.3, Centos5.4, Fedora8, Fedora10, Fedora11 )throughout the building, no difference.Tried USB and PS2 keyboards, tried unpluggin it and pluggin back in during X see if it would detect it that way, tried running system-config-keyboard before logging in as this fixed a similar problem I've had before.Read similar stories where it was a setting in xorg.conf but i haven't tried these yet as the xorg.conf is machine specific (to my understanding) and the problem seems to be user specific.
