Fedora :: Editing Activities / Applications Menu In F15?

Jun 3, 2011

Recently made the switch to F15 and GNOME3. The changes are a little jarring, but I'm trying to have some good faith, see how I adjust to things, etc. Any ways, the applications menu (in "fallback" mode) or the 'activities -> applications' menus (in "full" mode) have every application I've ever installed, some times poorly classified. I'd like to edit these, making more minimal menus.

There is, of course, the "alacarte" application. While it runs just fine -- the changes are not reflected in the menus (in either mode). One could manually edit the desktop configuration text files, I assume, but as much work as I need to do -- I was hoping for a GUI application. Does an alternative exist? or a way to interface them?

Applications :: Firefox - Bookmark Editing Broken ?

Aug 28, 2010

Linux - Ubuntu 10.4 LTS
Firefox 3.6.8 Canonical v1.0

First off, I have been having disk error problems with Ubuntu, and I think that a file that involves the bookmarks was corrupted. I did remove and reinstall the latest firefox package with Synaptic and apt-get (they do the same thing right?) But I still have this problem: I can not add or modify my bookmarks in the toolbar. I can go to the window to organize my bookmarks but its like nothing is there on the left main view box or the right that shows the bookmarks. If I try to import or restore, it does nothing.

Ubuntu :: Editing The Destination For A WINE Launcher In The Applications Menu?

Apr 9, 2011

I would like to edit the destination a launcher which opens a program using WINE. It is Applications >> Wine >> Programs >> World of Warcraft >> World of Warcraft. When I use Edit Menus to check the launcher properties I learn it is set as Type: Application, and Command: [URL]...How would I instead have it point directly at opening, with WINE, /home/dusf/.wine/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/Wow.exe?

The -opengl argument shouldn't matter as I have it preconfigured to run with opengl in the config. If relevant, when I navigate to c:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/, and open Wow.exe manually, it opens using WINE automatically.

Applications :: Install Oracle And Other Apps On Pendrive ?

May 15, 2010

I did a google search and found pendrivelinux.com/pendrivelinux-2008-install-from-windows/

If I install linux on a new 16GB SD chip that just arrived, can I use the above link and install bootable linux on it?

Can I then install the famouse oracle database server and java and eclipse once like it was a harddrive?

Apparently I have to use the "JauntePE Make Portable Apps" to modify existing applications. Is there an easier way?

Are there alternatives to pendrive linux? Do you like them?

Ubuntu :: Apps Disappear From 'startup Applications' List

Nov 8, 2010

I've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.

Ubuntu :: Video Editing Software?

Apr 22, 2011

Can someone recommend a very user friendly video editing software? I don't even know where to begin to look for this. I"m not that savvy w/ video at all and need something very simplistic. I just want to upload a video I took on my point and shoot camera to my computer [which i can do] and then add a music track to it and have it fit or at least fade out. And then I want to upload it to the internet [flickr and/or facebook, .....] Movie maker in Windows does that so easily that a five year old can figure it out. I need it that easy.

Fedora :: Prevent Some Apps From Appearing In Gnome 3 (Activities->Applications)

Jun 11, 2011

I don't want to install alacarte to do this. I've copied the .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications that I don't want appearing in the gnome 3 applications list (e.g., email settings for evolution), and added 'NoDisplay=true' to the end of each desktop file. Restarted gnome shell, even tried logging out and back in, but they still appear there. Previously, in gnome2, desktop files under the home dir superceded the global directory. Do I need to edit them directly as root to effect the changes, or could this be a selinux problem?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Video Editing With KDEnlive?

Jun 30, 2011

My Camcorder produces 1080i 50fps. Via handbreak I converted the clips to 1080p 25 fps. (de-interlace) using h264 codec.

These converted clips work very well with Kdenlive. All effects are working and the render results(mp4 max bitrate) are equal to the original.

Openshot is less sophisticated and in my opinion less intuitive.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Better Video Editing Software

I've been transferring a bunch of VHS and old camcorder tapes to video files. I've noticed that some of these videos need color correction or sharpening, etc. Most of the linux video editing software out there is just for splicing videos together.Does Linux have any professional grade video editing software? Is there anyway for me to color correct some of these videos using Linux? I've been searching forums trying to find an answer. Anyone have an recommendations? If not, what are some good Windows based alternatives? I can always run an alternative in a Windows VM.

I like Ubuntu alot and I'm mostly dedicated to free software and I have a bit of a web show. I am thinking of doing a fresh install of Ubuntu and I was wondering what was the best way to get the most out of Ubuntu when it comes to video editing. Ubuntu always seems..... crappy when it comes to video editing, I've heard it's because of the watered down video codecs. But I have updated my ffmpeg and abunch of other stuff but most video editors are still very buggy when it comes to encoding.
