Applications :: Building A Simple Program With Putty Commands?

I'm interfacing with a device using putty and right now I have to use a reference document to dissect the data I'm sending and receiving. I'd like to build a program that can build packets according to user input and then dissect them upon receipt; basically an [ english <=> proprietary packet structure ] program that talks to the device via USB. The packets come in varying sizes, but are composed of well-defined fields and values.

how (or what to use) to build a simple GUI on an embedded Linux system? I am using the Linux distribution Angstrom with a gcc compiler, and need to draw graphics on the screen. Preferably NOT in X11, but in a console only image. Are there simple graphics commands in C that will draw circles, boxes, and lines?

My daughter wants to build a little website that looks a bit like a magazine for her family and select friends. Front page has links to stories or articles she'll write. She would also like to post some pictures for people to see and maybe have people add comments if they like. I'd like to host it locally on our home server and limit access with an id and password. I would use something like DYNDNS.com to point family and friends to our server where they could login. I have an Ubuntu Lamp server setup to install what we need.

I can do basics, You know checking my hardware, cd to a dir, bring up -man of commands, stuff like that.
What I am wondering is what is the best way for one to get familiar with using the terminal as the main source of operation? I pretty much want to jump in the deep-end (well maybe the middle 7 feet or so), but with my knowledge of commands can pretty much just sit here and type $ls, $lspci,$uname ... and that gets dull. I want to utilize the terminal and have something to show for it, but do not know where to begin. I got linux so I could interact with the system, and though I am doing more of that then with MS I feel I am not doing enough.

I am trying to make a simple script. The first part works to untar a file. When I try to CD from within my simple script.sh file to the new directory just untared and run the setup commands it just errors out and says something about having no directory or something and saying that it cant make without configuring or something.

I am running a simple script that I copied from slug.ceca.utc.edu/docs/2009-3-26-linux-server-health.pdf and edited with the names and paths of my own servers. I don't know much about scripting (re: nothing) but I wanted to try and be efficient in my new role as a Linux Sys Admin. The script was saved to root's home directory and runs as part of root's crontab once a week. The script runs with no problem, but it doesn't actually seem to run all of the commands contained within. It skips some in the middle and the end and I don't know why. The script itself is this:

So I've wanting to try out the new development branch of compiz (0.9). I made some slackbuilds a while back and installed all of the necessary packages for the compiz window manager. However when ever I tried to launch the program using "compiz --replace ccp &" I would get a segmentation fault. I forgot about it but today I decided to give it another go and after a few hours I decided to try and see what would happen if I just built compiz-core from source with out using a slackbuild, and sure enough it now works. I have hacked the script trying different combinations to try and make it work but no matter what I try unless I install from scratch (directly into the tree) it will not work. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this so I can make an actual slack package please let me know. I need a simple program that I can talk into a microphone and the sound will come out the speakers. I want to use my Computer that's hooked up to the store speakers as a PA System.

I've got a bunch of hand-written notes which I would like to put into Kabikaboo (great app by the way) - but it is a real pain reading stuff then typing it up. I'd like a speech-to-text app, so I can just read my notes out loud and the computer will turn them into text files.Looking through Synaptic, all I can find is Julius; and that does not seem to be an easy-to-use app at all. So many parameters to set, an impenetratable (to me) manpage; and although I am a CLI user quite often, some kind of GUI would be nice.

I am using putty to connect to some servers. Is there a program that let you connect to say three servers and when you write your commands to server1, server2 & 3 also gets the command? So I don't have to log in to all three servers to do the exact same thing.

I am trying to setup a putty session to putty from one Ubuntu machine to another. I know how to setup to connect to the machine from Windows and I am using the same settings for the one I am trying on the Ubuntu machine but it fails to connect. It fails immediately so I believe that putty is not able to find ssh. Is there some configuring that I need to do.

I am just looking for a simple program, nothing overly complex with crazy features. Just something that pops up above any browser/window and remains that way until you click it or something. The pop up would occur periodically or at sometime each day. It would say something like "TAKE A BREAK FROM COMPUTER" lol and other things. not suppose to be some full reminder program like a calendar.

I wrote this script which works but it should run automatically about once per week. I hunted and experimented with KDE Task Scheduler (no dice and no help anywhere) and cron (confusing instructions and cannot edit crontab -e with vim, and cannot enter cron folders/files). I would settle for a desktop shortcut to run the script but found no for that.

First off, I'm completely new to bash scripting so forgive me if I make any egregious errors. I'm trying to make pop-up reminders for the simple calendar program when. This is what I have so far:

When I run the script, gxmessage pops up and displays the correct information, but it does so for each line in "~/.when/today" that contains a time that matches the current system time (which would be three pop-ups at 10PM, according to the example). I want it to display the information only once. How can this be accomplished? Is a while loop even the right job for this?

Stupid browser froze up when I tried to submit this before... *sigh* Anyway, is there a simple midi editor that that isn't Rosegarden and doesn't require JACK? Something would simply let me load a Soundfont, and then edit and export a multi-track midi file without a bunch of other stuff you have to do?
