Ubuntu :: Unable To Access BBC UK Content On Desktop But Can On Laptop?

Jan 14, 2010

Earlier when installing Karmic I requested assistance to enable me to listen & view BBC content in the United Kingdom. This involved me in loading :

Ubuntu restricted extras

which worked a treat.

I decided to install Karmic on an old desktop system with the intent of using it as a backup system for my data. Having installed this as a fresh install I again followed the earlier advice only to find that when I attempted to connect to the BBC I was asked to load flash. This happened no matter which station I attempted to listen or view.

As far as I can see everything has been installed exactly as on my laptop and therefore should naturally work as before. The only difference is the laptop is using 64 bit and the desktop 32. Since I now see that the desktop is also capable of 64 bit processing should installing the 64 bit Karmic help?

Using sysinfo does not give too much information. I am told that the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core processor 4400+, 1000.000 MHz & L2 cache 512. The graphic card is shown as VGA Compatible Controller and the Sound Card as a multimedia Audio Controller.

I am at a loss why I am being asked for flash on the desktop and not being able to have the same benefits as I have on my laptop running the same OS.

Ubuntu Servers :: Linking Several OS - Access The Windows 7 Desktop Via Laptop

Sep 12, 2010

I am currently finalizing a SSH Tunnel (gSTM) via Ubuntu Server (see: [URL]). The gentleman who helped me there went above and beyond the call of duty as we used to say in the military. Accordingly, I wanted to start a new thread to explore options to the pending completion. So, several systems in play here. I will list two of the three with the presumption that the SSH situation is in play (testing it today from outside of my network).

Systems Currently in Play: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition with all updates as of today's post: Server: Acer Aspire AST180-400A. It is currently being accessed from Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition with all updates as of today's post from a laptop: Toshiba Satellite A200. Router: Netgear N300 WNR 2000v2. Modem is Motorola Netopia 2210-02-1006. Proposed System To Add: eMachine ET1331G-05w running Windows 7. Why? Well, my girlfriend is terrified to ditch the Bill Hates way of things. It is running through the router currently as well.

What I would like to be able to do is access the Windows 7 desktop via my laptop on the road as well. Specifically, I need to be able to access and view documents and photos. Now, the docs are at least in OpenOffice; she switched to it finally. I would like to also be able to view my desktop to access docs and pictures on the server, but that may be a new thread as the Win7 situation is the priority right now.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using A Laptop As A Wireless Access Point For A Windows 7 Desktop

Mar 3, 2011

I have a windows 7 (64bit sadly) desktop computer with no wireless capability. Now before I go out and spend money on a wireless usb thing, I was wondering if I could use my laptop (Ibm think pad T60 running ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with crunch bang) As a wireless access-point and connect via Ethernet cable the laptop to the desktop (Probably through a modem?) so I can use the Internet for games on the desktop computer. (Games that wont work in wine, sigh). Just a note though, 64 bit windows 7 will NOT run anything.

Ubuntu Security :: Unable To Access Internet Utilizing Laptop

Mar 12, 2010

To start off I do not have the ability to post in the Networking/Wireless thread. I attend DeVry university and in my school they recently rolled out "Bluesocket." Now that they have done this I am not able to access the internet utilizing my ubuntu laptop.I am able to connect to the network. When I open my web browser I am redirected to the "bluesocket" login page where I am able to successfully log in. The next step to accessing DeVry's internet service is to allow Bluesocket to do a scan using a Java applet. That scan is successful.

The results of the scan inform me that I am not being allowed to access the network resources because I don't have an antivirus or firewall program installed on my computer. I do not wish to have an antivirus or firewall program installed on my laptop to utilize DeVry's network resources. My question is what steps do I need to take to bypass/trick bluesocket?

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Access In Laptop With 10.10 Maverick 64bit?

I do not have access in my laptop with ubuntu 10.10 maverick 64bit installed. I deleted network manager when trying to set up a static I.P follow the guid on this page www.liberiangeek.net/2010/09/setup-permanent-static-ip-add I've googled around. The methods suggested to solve it have not been useful in my case. I tried to the method by a user on this forum

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access KDE Desktop Due To Segfault

Apr 16, 2010

For the past few weeks my system has been exhibiting some strange behavior. The first of these instances has been in the form of a total system lockup necessitating a power cycle -- ie. no kernel panic or oops, but cessation of all on-screen activity and an unresponsive mouse and keyboard. ( The first lockup occurred when the monitor was powered down)

Just a few days ago, I started noticing something else : Launching Firefox (3.6.4pre) resulted in it locking up near start-up especially if I was logged into Gmail. After that I experienced a total system lockup and then another one which has placed me in the situation as suggested in the title.

Specifically, KDM and the KDM login manager will start-up and I will be allowed to type my password. Immediately after that when the first of the icons in the KDE start-up animation starts to come into focus the screen goes black and I am returned to the KDM login manager -- I can enter my password again and continue this process ad infinitum.

Trying to diagnose the issue, I attached GDB to KDM. It seems that after I enter my password one or more of the KDE start-up processes dies with signal 1 or to be more specific :

Program received signal SIGUSR1, User defined signal 1.

Ubuntu Security :: UNABLE - Access Private Data Desktop

Oct 12, 2010

I have a seperate partition for my "/home" folder. Whenever I install a new distro I format my "/" folder.

This way I was able to access my old home data files since I install using a different username. Everything worked fine until last Sunday.

10.10, unlike other versions of ubuntu, has encrypted my old username in my home folder.

Then using this document [url]

I was able to mount my hard drive again. But all the file and folder names are like this.

Btw I don't remember selecting an option to encrypt my old home directory in the first place, what is this ?

I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.

Fedora :: F14 Desktop Folder Gone / Get Content Back?

Apr 2, 2011

I was dragging and dropping content from a folder onto the user desktop folder when suddenly instead of the packed Desktop Folder I got the Home folder with the few normal files that were in it AND one file called Desktop.

(actually, the file name was "Escritorio" and it was a PDF file, and in $HOME/.config/ the file user-dirs.dirs was changed to say XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/" instead of XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Escritorio")

I've searched around but only found how to recreate a folder calles "Desktop" (or "Escritorio") and have it act like such, but not how to eventually recover the original "Desktop" folder AND ALL ITS CONTENTS (quite a lot!)

Is there any way to get the content back?

Ubuntu :: Samba Configuration - Unable To Write New Content

Sep 27, 2010

I have ubuntu server 10.4 installed on an Intel SS4200-E, which I have configured without any RAID. This machine acts as a media server to another PC. The other PC runs Windows 7 Ultimate. I have 3 1TB hard disks connected to it, and the file system on all the 3 are NTFS. I have mounted the hard disks as ntfs. I have made the folders on all the 3 hard disks shareable. I have configured Samba to make the folders on the hard disks "visible".

The ubuntu machine is in a headless configuration (it doesn't have any VGA card where can connect a monitor). I can configured SSH on it, so I can use putty from the Windows machine to logon to the ubuntu machine, but it is text based only. I am able to see all the 3 disks from the Windows machine. I am able to read/write into 2 of the disks. I am able to read, copy and delete from the 3rd disk, but not write new content to it.

Following is the snippet from /etc/fstab:

/dev/sda3 /media/Media1 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /media/Media2 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0
/dev/sdc1 /media/Media3 ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0

Following are the lines which I have added to the end of /etc/samba/smb.conf:

path = /media/Media1
writable = yes
guest ok = yes

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access "Your Desktop Is Only Reachable Over The Local Network. Others Can Access Your Computer Using The Address Or Tabatha.local"

Feb 19, 2010

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.

When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

Ubuntu Networking :: The Phone Can Access The Internet Through The Computer Unable To Get Access To Https Sites, Like Webmails

Dec 31, 2010

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following

----On the phone---

-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.

-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.

-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"

----On Ubuntu 10.04---

-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server

-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.

-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress ( and a subnet mask (; the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.

-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd

-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (

-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"

-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone ( Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.

-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:

1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.

2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.

So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection
