Ubuntu :: Setting Up X200 External Monitor (Displayport) Resolution?

I have finally decided to reach out for help because I've been messing around for 3 days with xorg.conf and I'm a beginner and not getting it right. What I want to do is to use only my external monitor (1920x1200) via DisplayPort when my computer is docked. And then my laptop display (1280x800) when undocked. I am using Ubuntu 10.04.
I have setup System->Preference->Monitor: Unchecked <same image in all monitors>, turned off laptop display, and set External monitor to 1920x1200. After doing this everything works when in Xwindows. The resolution is correct when I am docked, and when I am undocked it defaults to my laptop display.
The ONLY problem with using the System->Preferences->Monitor is that when I start up the computer when docked the external monitor goes to the incorrect (laptop screen) resolution at the initial login screen. After I login the resolution corrects itself but it's messy with reinitialization of the screen and my icons being all messed up. I think this happens because these settings only take effect after logging in.
I believe I have to edit the xorg.conf to get my setup working at the login screen. Can someone please tell me how to this.
I'm using Jessie 8.3 on Dell laptop Latitude E7240.
Now when I plug the laptop in the Dell eDock docking station, external monitor connected through DisplayPort and it is detected (according to xrandr output).
BUT nothing shows on the monitor (it stays black) and I get errors repeating in the kernel log:

I have connected to the VGA output of my laptop a 19" monitor. I setted in Ubuntu the resolution for that monitor to 1280x1024.
Two days ago i connected the laptop to a projector. When Ubuntu detected the projector it ask me for my user password to change "i dont know what".
After using the projector I have connected the laptop to the 19" monitor again. Now I can not set the resolution for the monitor to 1280x1024 (that resolution doesn't appear in the list)....
after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 i received the Unity as a default. with the help of this forum i figured out how to get the Gnome.i would like to try the Unity but when i am switching to Unity i cant get the resolution i need to my external monitor.i have an application, Switch resolution that doesn't work under the Unity but does work under Gnome.i can change the resolution in the external monitor to its native resolution but than i get the upper panel in a good resolution and below only black without any window or anything.
I have an EeePC 1005HA with Intel 945G chipset and graphics. I've got a 21" no-name touchscreen attached to the laptop with the intention of hiding the laptop away behind it and simply using the tactile widescreen with virtual keyboard (onboard). By the way, the Touch screen is working great OOTB in Ub 11.04, although will have to tweak some more to get multi-touch working.On it's own the netbook runs 1024x600 (16:9) automatically. As soon as I plug in the larger monitor and mirror the images it auto-defaults both to 800x600 60hz and I have no options to select a higher res. I want to be able to run the large screen in something like 1024x600 or better, as long as its 16:9. At the moment everything is stretched out on the larger screen and on the netbook I have a 800x600 with black margins left & right.
Can't seem to work it out. The Monitor Config doesn't give me any higher options than 800x600 when mirrored. Below is the output of xrandr, if it's any help. Also my xorg.conf file is practically empty.
I installed FC11 on my laptop T43 and the video card is ATI Mobility Radeon x300. Now I have a problem of screen resolution with external monitor:
When I do presentation, I have to mirror the two monitors and both set to 1024*768, which is not perfect.
I remember that when I use RHEL 5 desktop edition, The system can automatically detect the external monitor and set it by itself ----- The laptop uses 1400*1050 and the external monitors such as projector uses 1024*768. But I haven't found such feature on FC11.
I've got a little problem with my 9" netbook. It came preinstalled with Ubuntu (factory install), but I reinstalled it to get a fresh karmic as it was a second hand.The problem is, whenever I plug in an external monitor, rightclick on the display icon and click "Configure Display Settings..." both monitors go black and nothing responds. Weird thing though, is that sometimes the mouse appears on the second monitor. I need a solution for this, either creating a xorg file (I have no clue on how to do that) or some other solution that works.
My netbook resolution is 1024*600, the external monitor resolution is 1024*768. It should be noted that I had a similar problem on another Ubuntu laptop (NVIDIA drivers), but it had to do with the resolution height. My laptop had 1440*900 and my external monitor needed to have the height lower then 900. I have an ASUS 1000HE laptop running Lucid 10.04 (Desktop not netbook version) which I have connected to an external display (LCD). I don't intend to use the laptop by itself anymore therefore I have configured the display properties to turn off the laptop display and use the external display as primary. However, when the PC enters 'locked mode' or the display powers down after a defined period of time (as set in the properties) when I wake the PC and the display, it turns the laptop monitor back on .... switches the laptop screen to primary display (i.e. with the panels etc displayed on it) and extends the desktop to the external display! The only thing I can then do is go back into the configuration utility and turn the laptop monitor off again and boom, everything is fine and dandy displaying on the external display again! I don't really want to have to do this every time I come back to the PC after it has been locked nor do I want to write a script (if it can be avoided) to deal with it!
my laptop screen has 1900x1280 (native resolution) and my second monitor has 1600x1080
After browsing the forums and messing around with drivers I managed to get the resolution up to 1600x1080 (from 1000x800 at install) on the laptop screen. No luck at all with the second monitor. I currently have it connected with both VGA and DVI.
my understanding is I need to use twin view to setup the second monitor. I've read several of the earlier posts but haven't been able to get it to work. Here is my current xorg.conf file:
I am running Fedora 12 on a T400 Thinkpad. When connector my external monitor prior to powering on the computer or if I restart it, I get a lot of resolution choices from xrandr. See below.

Is there some daemon I need to restart to detect the monitor resolutions correctly, or is there a module I can reload?
There seem to several variables to reproducing the behavior. If I restart without the laptop without the monitor plugged in, log in, and then, plug the monitor in with the monitor powered on prior to plugging, all resolutions are detected properly. However, if I plug the monitor in with it powered off, then power it on, I only get the few options shown in above. Once I get the reduced number of options, it seems to stay that way till I restart regardless of how I unplug the monitor.
I have found a work-around by just forcing the modes with xrandr --newmode and xrandr --addmode, but I would much rather have the modes autodetected.
I have Ubuntu (running Jolicloud) on my HP dv2000 laptop, connected to my Sony AV Receiver through HDMI to use the TV as an external monitor. However, the resolution seems to be slightly off as the outer edges of the screen are cut off. Is there a way to fix this by editing the xorg.conf file? My current setup is below. I tried adding the line "Virtual 1244 700" to the subsection "display", but when I restarted it threw me into low graphics mode. Is there anything else I can try?
I also tried setting up the resolution at 1920x1080 on the TV and kept the default resolution on the monitor as 1280x800, and as you would expect displays the entire desktop in a smaller version on part of the tv. However, the desktop is still offset, leaving the top and left margins cut off. So, perhaps I need a way to offset the screen? Is this possible in xorg.conf?
When I'm connecting second monitor to the laptop, Display Settings applet (and xrandr -q) does not detect full list of supported resolutions. I need to restart my system or perform Log off while monitor is connected to make full list available.openSUSE 11.4 32 bit, Ati Mobility Radeon HD 3450, proprietary ATI driver 11.3 8.831.2-110308a-115935C-ATI.External monitor is FullHD SyncMaster B2330 (1920x1080)I wonder is there any other workaround to access full resolution that does not require restarting of the system?
I have a laptop and an external monitor connected via displayport. I can configure both displays via settings with correct resolution and arrangement. However, this configuration is not sticking, and every time I shut down the laptop or close the lid I will need to fight with black screens and more to bring the same configuration again. Basically, it seems that the monitor is "stealing" the primary role to the laptop's native screen (I have it configured as secondary, but also being primary the configuration gets messed).
After many trial & errors, this is the routine I have found to make things work every time I boot / awake the system:
1. Boot. Laptop's display shows the booting sequence. 2. When the login screen should appear, laptop's display goes black, monitor shows background. 3. If I press F9 to increase brightness, the brightness icon appears in the monitor, but it is stuck at the minimum. 4. The only way to leave this point is by pressing F7 (project screen) and then F9 again to increase brightness. Then the laptop's screen does light up.
This is when I'm lucky. Sometimes the configuration goes mad and I get mirrored displays and different resolutions, without touching the settings myself. Also, if I unplug the displayport I run the risk of getting stuck with a black screen in the laptop, without any way of recovering the GUI other than rebooting (Ctrl Alt F2 will still show the command line screen).
My system is Debian 8 testing up to date, running in a Lenovo T430 with Intel components. I'm not sure the monitor is relevant here, but in any case it is an Eizo CS240.
When I boot my computer I get this message: Warning Pc video resolution is out of range Change setting to recommended resolution 1280x1024 @60mh So I hit ctrl alt f1 I typed in Sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Nothing happens. It's been very frustrating because with everything that I've looked up it says that it's suppose to guide me through something. I desperately need my computer for school.
I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again. When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.
I have an external monitor connected to my laptop (extended display). I always drag the Totem player from the laptop screen to external monitor to watch video files. I wonder, if the Totem player can be set to open in the external monitor automatically, everytime I open it?
My software and hardware information are as follows. I have Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4.5 installed on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I believe it's a 64 bit processor; it's an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The external monitor is a Dell as well.
My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.
My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).
I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.
I am noticing some rather high CPU temps while using Debian 7.8 KDE on a Lenovo X200 laptop.
Even when its not doing anything its getting as high as 70C sometimes. I opened it up and went in with a can of compressed air, it went down a little to 36C now its back to 70c the day after.
Then I realised the fan was hardly spinning is there any way I can control how much (or little) the fan spins at certain temps?
My guesses are it could be done with a bash / shell script in the kernal loaded at booting up. But am unsure.
I am trying to use a large LCD TV as a monitor for movies, etc. I have the user set up and working. But, I'm struggling with GDM. I rather miss the days where a few cryptic settings in XORG.conf file made everything work correctly.
I added some lines to /etc/gdm/Init/Default and /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default. In both cases I added: xrandr -newmode "1360x768_60.00" xrandr -addmode VGA1 "1360x768_60.00" xrander -output VGA1 "1360x768_60.00"
The next line is original and is /sbin/initctl -q emit login . . . . . .
I'm not sure if I'm not adding the xrandr info to the right files/locations or if my xrandr stuff is wrong. For the user, I just logged in via VNC and changed the resolution. That part was easy.
just installed ubuntu10.04 has set monitor resolution to 800x600 i need 1920x1080 i have been at this for two days now and getting absolutely no where , i could set this on windows in 5 minutes , why does it need to be so hard on ubuntu, i really prefer ubuntu to windows but problems like this really can drive one to despair. i have tried so many different web sites and follow instructions but keep getting command not found which i dont understand why. here is an example of something i tried in terminal xrandr --output VGA --mode 1920�1080 --rate 50 i get warning: output VGA not found; ignoring.many other things i have tried come up with command not found .
I have a laptop with an "ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series" video device. I have trouble configuring the second VGA monitor attached to the laptop to 1024x768 resolution. It is always stuck on 2560x800. My xorg.conf file is as follows:
Just installed 11.04 on a box that it is on a kvm switch. As long as the switch is connecting the monitor to the booting Ubuntu box, the resolution of the monitor is detected OK. However, if for some reason I am working on a different box and the KVM switch is routing K V and M inputs to the other box, then Ubuntu defaults to what seems a botched VGA setting (i.e. it chops off top and left sections of the display).While in this "VGA" mode if I log out and log in, it re-detects the resolution ok.Is there any way to force Ubuntu to use a specific resolution no matter what? In this way, if I am working on a different box while waiting for Ubuntu to load, when I switch the resolution will be OK.I tried the only thing I can think of and this is to set the "good" resolution as "default" for "all" monitors, but it has no effect.
I was playing around with the NVidia settings control panel today and I saw that its Resolution dropdown was giving me options for
1680*1050 1920*1080
My monitor supports up to 1440*900. When I selected one of the higher resolutions, it didn't look very sharp, and the text was somewhat fuzzy and lacked clarity. Was this rendering being done by the graphics card but 'compressed' by the monitor?
The status said 'switched to metamode'. I tried searching but found nothing - what exactly does MetaMode mean? I'm more interested in understanding what was happening, only experimenting with the higher resolutions. What monitor and resolution do you have?
When I boot up, Grub flashes a message along the lines of "vga=7xx is deprecated, use setting y instead,". Where would grub2 log this error, and what file would I have to edit to change from the old to new resolution setting?

I was able to get the terminals to run at 1920x1080 by adding Code: video=sisfb:mode:1920x1080x32,rate:70,mem:4096 to my grub command. That's nice, but I really want Xorg running at that resolution, and it didn't. I've been working on this for hours, through dozens of gdm restarts with every variation of the above I can think of.?
I have ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer in dual boot with windows 7, but i am using a 27-inches Samsung screen through an hdmi cable to connect my computer. whenever i try getting on ubuntu, i cannot see the top and bottom of the desktop (so i cant access the menu bar or anything!)(while using my spare vga cable) i tried downloading the nvidia driver & utility for my video card (gtx 460), but even using that, i could not setup my screen resolution manually. When i setup my windows, i was able to manually setup a custom resolution (i.e. 1842x1026) through the nvidia utility to be able to get the screen the fit properly.
I was wondering if there is any way i could do the same for ubuntu, perhaps through terminal.
I've installed and reinstalled Ubuntu server 11.04 about five times now.
I want to have the LVM, with an encrypted partition for holding / and /home (the swap is not encrypted).
Each time, after installing the resolution (I have not installed GNOME) is very bad and the prompt for entering the key to unlock the disk seems to scroll each time a character is entered.
The system is almost unusable at this resolution.
What can I do? I want to have an encrypted disk, but it seems at the moment that the only way to have a workable system is to install on an unencrypted partition.
why both ubuntu and centos 5.4 will only give me 800x600 resolution on my monitor when opensolaris immediately gives me 1280x1024?The first time I tried ubuntu it gave me 1280x1024 and now will only make 800x600...This is a viewsonic VG930M Monitor..
