Ubuntu :: Login - Enter My Password To Login The Screen Becomes Black And Return Me Again
Apr 15, 2011
I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I'm trying to install the latest version of Ubuntu Studio. I tried it a few months ago with my HP... a live system worked fine, but when I installed it, it would go blank after the splash screen. I assumed it was some sort of incompatible graphics driver and gave up since I don't know enough about Ubuntu yet.Now I have a spare Dell XPS desktop sitting around and I got the latest version of Ubuntu Studio and tried it again. The install goes by erfectly, this time the welcome screen actually comes up and I can see my username. As soon as I hit enter, which I imagine should bring up the password prompt, the entire screen goes black and won't respond to anything.
I just finished installing 10.10 on my pc. the problem is that i cant login to the desktop i enter the password, the login sound plays and im stuck looking at the wallpaper. nothing else. i tried logging in safe mode and it worked. how can i get it to work normally?
pc specs: Pentium 4 2.6 ghz 512mb ram ati radeon 9600 graphics card
I have no idea what happened to my OS(ubuntu10.04).it doesn't give me any option to enter my login name & passwd.i just get a blank(default) login screen.last time when it worked,i was trying to install GTK+2.8,but due to my mistake i deleted glib using cmd (sudo apt-get purge glib)and after that i even tried to launch terminal but it failed to launch.also tried to play media files using vlc but it didn't work.so i tried to restart my os and finally got stuck in the problem.i have no idea what to do,please help.Is there any cmd to see what problem occurred or which package is missing.
It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.
I installed a bunch of updates this morning and am encountering the following problem since I restarted after that: After I login, the screen will flicker once and then return to the login screen. I assumed that something must be wrong with my graphic settings (as so often). So I logged in via Ctrl+Alt+F3 and checked the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log for erros. Everything seemed all fine. I also ran
Code: sudo apt-get install --reinstall gdm && sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm as recommended in this thread. Also no success. I ran "sudo service gdm restart". That showed me at first a dialog box saying that my graphics card and input device settings could not be detected. I then chose to have a new configuration for this hardware created. This only resulted in the screen flickering for longer when I logged in again and then returning to the login screen.
My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
My OpenSUSE 11.2 is working fine as samba server, no problems, but I have a problem with KDM.My default init runlevel is set to 5 and every time I try to login at KDM (KDE4), the monitor goes black and returns to the login screen. If I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to console and start /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon manually, press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to KDM login, everything is fine. What do I have to do to fix this issue?
been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.
I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora. This is my main computer.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I'm trying to configure my chat accounts. But after entering username and password, it is asking "Enter password to unlock your login keyring". I have entered my login password. But it is saying that "The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring."
I would like to disable the login screen when the computer returns from suspension and hibernation, so that it will automatically log me back in. I am using Ubuntu 9.10.When I come back from suspension, for some reason, my key board does not work in the login screen and I cannot type my password.
my ubuntu 10.10 64bit (in Dell Latitude machine) login screen is not working. the blank bar to type username and password is not appearing at all. In a quick appeareance there also a sentence: "permission denied". I've tried to browse this forum and seems no answer. I still can access the terminal though using alt+ctrl+F2 but i don't know how to access the desktop because when i hit alt+F7 it come back to login screen. how can i fix it? I have several files in the laptop that need to be saved, if not I probably just clean install it.
Alright guys. I need to find a way to enable a black screen screensaver (or turn off the monitor, or something to avoid burn in) while the machine is sitting at the login screen and completely turn off the ability for the computer to sleep. how I can accomplish that?
So my problem is I recently upgraded my Graphics driver and shut down to log in to windows (yes i dual boot) About 10-15 min later i went to log ubuntu the splash/loading screen what ever you call it worked normally but on reaching the point where one would login I was presented with a Blank screen. Ctrl-alt-f1 also presents me with a blank screen.
I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a while it is so great But for the first time, I've booted my laptop on battery power instead of AC power. I have a black screen on the gnome login and i can hear the ubuntu sound. If i press CTRL+ALT+F2 the screen switch from black to the login (terminal version). The problem only appear when i boot from battery power...if i boot from AC power everything is fine !!! I can see the gnome login page. in fact i've reinstalled ubuntu same problem. I think it's a bug with the release. My laptop is a HP TX2000.
This problem started within the last few minutes. I run a program in my browser that uploads data from my machine (ubuntu) to another machine (Fedora 13), for manipulation and then spits back the data that does not match our standardised information.
When I tried to run it a few minutes ago, it seemed to take a long time to make the connection. I went back and checked the machine, everything was connected and fine. I decided to reboot the machine from within KDE and then try again. Same result. I went to the machine again and tried to login through KDE, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns me to the login screen. I switched over to a virtual terminal and was able to login using the same credentials. I checked the .xsessions-errors file and this is what I am seeing:
I have a few machines set up and running Red Hat 4.1.2-42 in a computer lab. I also have a single test machine running the same version. The machines in the lab work flawlessly. However, when machines are on the login screen, they don't go into power saving mode. That is, after a certain amount of inactivity, the idle login screen should be replaced by a black power saving screen. But this does not happen. The monitor should go into standby (the little green light becomes orange, and the whole screen shuts down until you move your mouse again...you know the drill).I know this is supposed to be the case because this works on the test machine. It just doesn't work in the lab. I think it has something to do with gdm, but I can't for the life of me figure it out.
Ubuntu 9.10, x64. Around 30-40%of the time, after i login, I just get a totally black screen. If i leave it for a few minutes, nothing seems to happen. Whether or not i get login seems fairly random, and I don't notice if there is any common factor- This is always from a clean boot, and i could be on power, or not on power. This is on a HP 6730b, so the video should be a Intel GMA 4500.
I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on one of them by default installation. For the moment there is only one user declared. The installation seems OK, except that Ubuntu didn't find my PPPoE connexion. When I logged in, I got a blank screen with the mouse cursor (it moved, but when I left or right-clicked nothing happened) and on the left something looking like two 1-pixel wide menus, as if the system had understood there were a dual screen. These menus could roll and unroll, and I think I even once managed to shutdown by going to the last invisible item thanks to the keyboard arrows (I'm not sure, because I had also clicked on ctrl+alt+suppr, so it could be a delayed effect of that).
I restarted the computer several times, to get no more than that. When I'm in Gnome safe, everything is OK but I don't have any root privilege there (I guess it's normal): for instance, I can't set up the internet connexion. My 20" 4/3 Philips screen is recognized. Then I changed the screen frequency: it's still OK for Gnome safe session, but now, in the Gnome normal session, instead of a black screen with 1-pixel wide menu, I get a black background picture with white light coming from above and reflecting to an otherwise invisible floor. The mouse cursor is moving, but this is the only thing which works.
I just Installed Ubuntu on my PC (win XP-pro) using wubi, by downloading the .iso from webpage and burned it to cd. The installation went fine, but when I login the screen goes black. I can still see my mouse pointer and one vertical pixel line of the desktop. Could it be the graphics drivers, if so how can I update/change them, via rebooting in safe mode and using command line?
I get a black screen (with tiny bits of white on opposite corners of the screen) every time after logging into Kubuntu Lucid AMD64. The only thing I can do is move my mouse pointer over that black screen which doesn't go away. I booted into recovery mode and with command prompt typed "startx" to start graphical mode. That resulted in the same black screen. Then I decided to reboot and install Fluxbox via the command prompt under recovery mode. Now, I'm able to view graphically under Fluxbox after selecting it over the default KDE and logging in. But how do I get regular KDE/Kubuntu to work again? I don't know what happened to make it stop working!
I just used a LiveCD to install Ubuntu 11.04 x64 on my HP desktop. I'm not sure what you need to troubleshoot. It has the following specs:
HP Pavilion Media Center m8539f PC AMD Phenom X4 9550 QC Processor 5gb ram, 750 gb hdd Came with vista home prem, nothing left of that except the old restore partition, which I have left intact. It had Windows XP installed recently, but that's completely erased. GeForce 9300GE Video Card
Anyway, I want the x64 so that I can have access to my RAM, among other things.
After installation with the LiveCD, it will come on, present me with generic/safe/etc boot options, and then when either safe or generic is chosen, it goes to an (active?) cursor for a few seconds before revving the HD, screen going black, and then... nothing. No indication it is even still powered at all except the light on front.
Iam facing a weird problem with ubuntu since last week... Starting system-->selecting ubuntu from grub menu-->ubuntu splash screen comes and it loads fully-->black screen is displayed instead of login window.. Restarting the system and the prob is gone..able to login properly..
This problem is ocurring randomly..sometimes i can login in 1st attempt properly, other times i have to restart the system twice or even thrice to get to the login screen.. what can be the possible reason to this...I have not done any updates also..
After applying an update about two or three days ago, I restarted my system and now I'm getting a black screen at login. I can hear the brief drum sound clip that plays when the login dialog box pops up, but the screen is completely black and I can't see anything. I'm still able to access low graphics mode via the fail-safe option in the recovery mode menu. So far I've tried the following commands in the terminal:
1st Problem:The problem that I am having is for Ubuntu 10.10. When logging in for some reason it will:1. Login and play the Ubuntu login sound.2. Will start loading the desktop and panels.Right after #2 it goes black and kicks back to the login screen. I am not sure what to do since it constantly does this. It renders the computer useless if I cannot get passed the login page. Yes the username and password are correct.2nd Problem:Before this 1st problem occurred this has also been a problem that has not went away. When I used to be able to login to the desktop I have just the panel on the top of the screen with the traditional Ubuntu "start menu", "system", etc. For some reason the right side which is the other half of the panel will not load. The only solution which fixes it while I am on the current session is to right click the panel and click Minimize/Expand button which toggles to center the panel on the top of the screen. Now when I click Expand its like the problem never happend, but this only fixes it for that session.
