Ubuntu :: Hard Disk Working At Half Speed During Boot?
Oct 22, 2010
I've recently updated my ubuntu lucid to maverick (32bit).However I noticed a strange issue at boot. My boot time is increased more than three times(tried to reprofile, but with no improvement) from 24s to 1.23min.After some bootcharting,I noticed that the disk utilization during maverick boot seems to be at 50% for most of the time and also the cpu seems to work at half speed for most of the time...My laptop is an asus m51sn, intel t8300, nvidia geforce 9500m gs, 3gb ram, 500Gb WD scorpio blue hdd.
For our workgroup I set up a server which is basically 10.04.2 with kernel 2.6.32-32-server on a SSD and all the data on a RAID 5 consisting of 4 2TB hard disks, thus a maximum of 6TB space for data on the RAID. Having multiple users with different amounts of data from different scientific data source I set up an lvm on top of the RAID
--- Physical volume --- PV Name /dev/sdb2 VG Name home-data PV Size 5,45 TiB / not usable 3,00 MiB
Here is the problem: The volume Genomes (or /genomes) is half full
but the system states it as full whenever I try to add more data (tried cp and rsync). There is no quota set to the volume (I have quotas in place for users home folders. These are only for max amount of disk space, not max file number, and I am still able to move/add files elsewhere so there seems to be no interference).
I have what seems to be a hard disk Write speed problems with my first hard drive. Timing the cp command of a 700 Meg file takes about 8 secs from disk 2 to 3 but takes 25 minutes from disk 2 to disk 1.
Here are the details: Kubuntu 9.04 (Kernel 2.6.28-15-generic) Hard Disk 1 : /dev/sda (WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0) Partitioned /dev/sda1 ext3 / 10 Gigs /dev/sda2 extended 222 Gigs /dev/sda5 linux-swap 2 Gigs /dev/sda6 ext /home 220 Gigs
Hard Disk 2 : /dev/sdb (WDC WD2500AAKS-00F0A0) Partitioned : /dev/sdb1 ntfs 16 gigs /dev/sdb2 xfs /home/eric/data_drive 216 Gigs Hard Disk 2 : /dev/sdc (ST3500320AS) Partitioned: /dev/sdc1 xfs /home/eric/data_drive2 465 Gigs
By doing 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdc1' takes about 8 seconds and same vice-versa. the command 'time cp ...sdb1/test.avi ...sdb1/test1.avi takes about 11 seconds and the same holds true if sdc1 is used But copy sdb1 or sdc1/test.avi to either sda1 or sda6 and it takes 25 minutes. Same problem if I copy from the same drive partition (sda). I have booted a livecd Knoppix 6.2 and the same problems happens.. So safe to say it's not Kubuntu. The only thing that is left to do is backup and reformat the partitions as XFS and try again. I also did a full smartcontrol Extended test and no errors. Checked all the various logs and nothing found.
How do I check my hard disk Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) speed from a Linux shell prompt without opening my server case? any other third party utility please let me know.Ieferenced some other articles. they give only model number, serial number and disk space.
I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible, can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.
I have a machine currently running Debian Lenny on which I would like to run Ubuntu for the driver support in its newer kernel. However, I did a test boot from the installation CD and it appears to be running at less than half its rated speed. This is the output from the Debian kernel:
brendand@kant:~$ uname -a Linux kant 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Wed May 12 18:03:14 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux brendand@kant:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor: 0
Maybe this is some sort of power save bug where the CPU speed is incorrectly scaled back. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Should I report it as a bug, and, if so, how do I do that?
I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?
I have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.
I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?
after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died. The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops. One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. Now that other hard disk has error and will not work
my Fedora 11 system is not starting anylonger. It stops with the message:
VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem on dev dm-0
The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).
i have bought a new system with ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard and AMD X4 635 processor i have installed Ubuntu UE as operating system when i boot the system a warning that no hard disk is detected appears then another warning appears stating that processor fan is not working and to press F1 to resume but the system boots on pressing F1 is there any problem with this ? is the processor fan really not working ?
I have an Acer aspire 1551 notebook Ubuntu worked fine until now. It will not boot. It boots until the music sounds, and the login screen is supposed to appear, then it just locks up. The strange part is that both the installed version and the USB ubuntu live version fail at the same point. I even tried two versions of Ubuntu live on USB. Windows 7 however works fine. I think something must have happened to the hardware That will not load ubuntu, but will load windows About the only thing I did different on my last session was to install wine and then install Textpad in wine.
I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?
This afternoon I finally had the time to run this Ubuntu KK CD and load over my old xp/Jaunty J partition. I had previously run the distro. through the CD, without harming my old partition. On doing so the system consistently reported my Toshiba ATA 120 gig hard disk had multiple bad sectors and was failing. As a true end user (who mucks only when necessary with the CLI) I just figured writing over the partition would end the failure. To be sure I ran Memtest8.66 v2.11 from the LiveCD; everything checked out fine. So I installed KK.
Or was I? Why did it still have the "Install ubuntu 9.10 ISO" icon on the left hand side of the screen? How did the CD come to whir when I tried starting apps like Open Office? Something wasn't right. So I rebooted, this time from the HDD. The start up looked predictable - there's that PXE-E361 Media Test Failure on some cable, I've been staring at that since I built the dual partition. But what's this? PXE-MOF: exiting EXE ROM. Huh? Oh and then the letter j..
This is a Toshiba Satellite A105 with a 200 gH 1gig Pentium M. When I boot the liveCD I get this trial environment that works fine. When I try installing from it I can even see that I'm writing over the previous, whole 9.10 partition I created this afternoon. Regardless when I boot from HDD I get that weird letter j..
I've checked on line for boot issues, and the forum too, but so far haven't seen an issue booting from the HDD, especially when the distro. is already loaded. What am I missing here, and how do I install it from a live CD environment?
i have amd athlon x2 3gb RAM ddr2 two hdd one 80gb other 1tb in this computer i got only ubuntu all disk in EXT4.i want to copy 10gb many file of 700mb or 1gb ( many linux ISO )the transfer is 1mb/s this is SOOO SLOW.i did a touch /forcefsck just in case but nothing happen it is still slow!!what might be the problem ??
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Instead I rebooted. The hard disk with the problem is:
Code: $ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb [sudo] password for brian:
I installed an OS on the second hard-disk/partition3 (/dev/sdb3; OS was FreeBSD). Added the entry and when i boot: nothing. I choose the OS from grub's menu, the list of choices vanishes, the background image stays, and there it hangs. It hangs until i hit: ctrl+alt+backspace. I have thought: to hell with it, and installed Debian/Lenny. Same problem (OH!).
I also installed the boot-loader to the second disk (/dev/sdb), hit F11 after the BIOS-screen and chosen the second hard-disk to boot from: a similar problem. It hangs, and the keyboard is "dead". I am clueless what to check for (i checked the general culprits, but with UUID its all a bit of a mess. I would say it looks good, but wouldn't bet on it) Anyone ever heard of something like that? Without error message its not easy to use the amazing Google. I do a bit of grub-troubleshooting, usually it works, but usually i get error-messages.
I made two threads about it, in case they contain useful info, here they are: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... sd-827059/ http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=17021
I'd like to move my existing Ubuntu installation from my hard disk (/dev/sda1) to a USB stick. How do I copy the data from HD to USB? dd is obviously not the right option since the HD is 320GB and the USB stick only 16GB. However, only 3.5GB are used so this makes perfect sense. And it would make my HTPC even more silent |-)
Acer Travelmate laptop, 1.3GHz Pentium M, 12MB Ram.pensuse 11.4 (upgraded from 11.3)Vanilla install, not running anything special, always startup and shutdown from scratch, never sleepFor several minutes after KDE appears and I open an app (any app, e.g. Chrome) the hard disk is going nuts. WTF is it doing and how do I stop it? Also some programs take years to start, e.g. digicam took TEN minutes the other day even after waiting a while after booting, the disk thrashing the whole time. But in 11.3 it started almost instantly.
I am having 2 Hard Disk 1 is having RHEL 5 Installed And 2nd is having Windows XP, now i want to dual boot my PC with the help of this two Hard Disk? Can i Dual Boot with RHEL & Win XP having Installed in 2 different HD? what is the Procedure?
My laptop had 1 hard disk, partitioned as follows:C: (NTFS), on which Windows XP was installed.D: (NTFS), on which I stored my personal data.Recently, I bought a new hard disk, and divided it into two partitions: An NTFS partition (to store personal data), and another partition on which I installed Linux (Debian Lenny).I want my systo act as follows:While booting the system: if I select to boot from the first hard disk, Windows XP loads. Else, if I select to boot from the second hard disk, Linux loads. In other words, I want the MBR of each disk to point at the corresponding OS.
I saved wubi.exe to c: and when running wubi, I pointed it to my usb hard drive for installation of ubuntu. When I rebooted my PC, I got a message that there was no boot manager. Even cntl-alt-delete did not work, so I unplugged the pwr cord and battery and reconnected them. I interrupted the boot to get to BIOS and found that Ubuntu was first in the boot chain. Apparently, when it is, no boot manager is found. So I removed the usb from the pc and was able to boot into W7.
I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
