I would like to format my new external hard drive (1.5TB) so it can be accessed on both Linux (Ubuntu) and OSX. Is that possible without using FAT system? If yes, what file system should I use?
View 7 RepliesI just bought a new 320gb laptop hard drive and mounted it into an external enclosure. The hard drive has never been formatted. I plugged it into my computer running Ubuntu 10.10 and nothing happens. I expected something toopup and say the drive has not been formatted and give me formatting choices. I looked in Places>Computer and it's not there. I even looked in Gparted and it does not show it. So how on earth do I format a new external hard drive?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI wanted to get started with Ubuntu so I partitioned an external hard drive with Ubuntu 11.04 onto it. After finding out my computer couldn't but up from a external hard drive I wanted to format my drive. When I plugged it into my computer, Windows would not recognize it. I then dual booted Ubuntu 11.04 onto my laptop and attached my drive. Ubuntu found it a recognized it as 3 separate disks. I then opened up disk utility and told it to format the drive. After clicking a couple "OKs" I got an error message: An error occured while performing an operation on "500 GB Hard Disk" (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex): The device is busy I clicked details and got:One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb. I was wondering what I could do since it isn't doing anything in the first place. I just want to format the whole thing.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI put a larger drive in my netbook and stuck the old in an external USB enclosure so I could use it for backups. It had three partitions on it, ntfs and linux so I deleted all the partitions and created one big linux partition. Every time I write and exit fdisk the removable disk utility in KDE pops up and says ntfs drive. If I ignore it and try to formatit wants to use ntfs, if I fsck.ext3 it saysThe superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2filesystem. If the deviceis valid and it really contains an ext2filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblockis corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:e2fsck -b 8193 <device>2fsck -b 8193 doesn't work either.It seems like its caching something, I can print the partition table and see the one linux partition I created.

and am running Ubuntu 9.04 version. My wife's USB flashdisk has picked up viruses from computers running Windows in her office. My quick solution is to format it (and external hard disks as well) in my machine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Seagate external hard drive and I want to use it to back up my home server since it runs Ubuntu 6.10 and the upgrade to 10.10. My problem is that I am not able to format the drive to use it. I can not change the permissons or if I try to format I have all sorts of trouble. I have tried doing it on the home server running 6.10 and another pc running 10.10 and had no luck. Is there a better way? I have even tried chmod and chown with no luck.

I've copied some stuff to it and practiced partitioning and formatting with it, but I want to use something to erase it completely. Is this possible if the USB is connected to a ThinkCentre 8187-EJU with an Ubuntu 10.04 OS? I've used Dban to erase regular hard disks but don't any software that could be installed on my computer that would erase a USB drive.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.
I've got this hard drive that I know that is formatted to either ext3 or ext4, but I want to find out which format it is. I'm unfamiliar with many commands, I tried 'fdisk -l' but it didn't yield any useful information to me. Is there a command wherein I can easily find out the format of disks?

I have an 500GB Iomega external drive connected to my iMac and used for the Mac Time Machine back-ups. I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have WD external hdd (80GB) formatted with fat32. I was using this hdd to transfer the data from computer A (LINUX, RH9) to computer B (Win7).
I was keep copying and deleting the data in the WD hdd during the data transfer because the amount to transfer is more than 300GB.
After doing this several times (and the WD drive was emptied), comp. A said the disk is full. I checked using 'df' and it was really full but 'ls -la' shows that there is no data in it.
I checked it in comp. B, and it showed empty. I tried to format in comp. A using 'mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/xxx# (block#)', but showed an error message like below.
'Warning: block count mismatch: found 78xxxxx but assuming 0'.
I found a similar situation in this forum metioning 'possible damaged linux kernel (not exactly same expression though)', so I re-installed linux in comp. A, but the problem was not solved.

I need some assistance in trying to format a USB hard drive to vfat format but can't seem to do so. I am currently using RHEL 5.3. I have tried the following commands and they all come back as "command not found"
mke2fs vfat /dev/sc1

mkfs.vfat /dev/sdc1

I am getting a new 4kb sector HDD for my laptop, WD scorpio black 750gb, I would like to image existing partitions on 512bytes sector HDD and move them to the new 4kb sector HDD, what's the best way to do this.
present config is as follows:

I am planning to keep the same three partitions as the primary partitions on the new drive and add few more logical partitions. I would have liked to move to GPT but since I need Win 7, I am stuck with MBR partiotion table.
Now, I understand how to partition an Advanced format disk, what I want to know is how to move the existing partitions on the 80 Gb disk to the new disk?
I use Clonezilla to copy partitions but it is not compatible unless both the target and the source disks are already using 4096 sector size.
I can use Acronis True Image WD Edition to clone Win 7 but how do I clone Ubuntu?
Also my Laptop's chipset is limited to SATA 1.5, will it cause any issues, I know the bandwidth is not an issue.
i know there's tools like gparted, but if i have an external HD, how do i format it?

I have just got a new external harddisk. I used it strait in window I copy some files on it. without formating it. Now when I use ubuntu it said that it is total only 10Giga, but the external harddisk is 1000 Giga. How come ? is htis because it has to be formated before ubuntu se the total size ?

I have been stumbling around trying to figure it out but I'm pretty sure I'm just making a mess of things. Could someone give me or show me how to format and setup an external HD from step 1 to completion?
I actually do have one of the new HD's kinda working but it doesn't auto-mount when I plug it in. I've tried so many different things I'm not sure what I've done anymore. I'd really just like to start from "remove the HD from the packaging" and go from there.
I have a 300 external usb drive which I have got when using windows and so is using a fat32 filesystem. I have since moved to linux only and am mounting the drive as vfat however I think I may as well convert it to ext4 if possible for (amongst others) performance and security reasons. The problem is I don't have a separate drive which would hold the 250gb of data temporarily whilst I changed the filesystem of the drive so I am hoping there is a way to format as ext4 whilst retaining the files?I know partition magic on windows allowed you to change between filesystems whilst keeping the data but does anything similar (and free! ) exist for linux?

I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Have 4xSamsung F4 HDDs in an Ex503, Raid 05 - don't know how to format them to get maximum speed out of them. I've read [URL] tor_issues and other things but guess i am too dumb. Some claim using GPT Partition table and gparted and i shouldn't have any problems because it's automatically doing what i want, but i am not sure about that.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can play a CD which has music files as .CDA files, if I put it in the internally mounted CD/DVD player. I can see the contents of the CD with Dolphin (or Konquror) and play it using Kaffeine. However, as soon as put the same CD in an external DVD/CD player, I cannot see it with Dolphin (or Konqueror). Nor can I play it Kaffeine (although, strangely, I can play it with VLC player). My system just cannot mount that CD, it remains invisible to the system (excepting for the VLC player or the K3b). For CD with mp3 files or DATA files there is no problem at all.
How can I play and see CDROM with files in CDA format through an external USB DVD/CD player in the same way as I can see it when put in the internal DVD/CD player?
