Ubuntu :: Format External Drive - Copy The Entire Home File Be Drag And Drop

Jun 8, 2010

I have an 500GB Iomega external drive connected to my iMac and used for the Mac Time Machine back-ups. I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.

Ubuntu Networking :: The Attempted Drag And Drop Is Ignored Copy And Paste Still Works Fine?

Jan 23, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) as a headless workstation, running a VNC screen. Worked perfectly for about 3 weeks, then suddenly, I lost the Drag and Drop capability, for all applications. For example: Dragging and dropping to move items on the desktop does not work. The item simply pops back to the original location.Dragging and dropping to move items from one folder to another does not work. Same behavior the item just pops back to the original location.Dragging and dropping Bookmarks in Firefox does not work. The attempted Drag and Drop is ignored.Copy and paste still works fine. The problem does NOT occur when using an attached monitor (primary display screen :0).After much Googling (including these forums), I suspected that the changed behavior was caused by an update (from Ubuntu Update Manager). I confirmed this with the following:

Reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 fresh from the live cd.
Configured minimal networking and installed VNC server.
Tested Drag and drop -- works okay
Applied pending updates (116) from Ubuntu Update Manager
Tested Drag and drop -- not working

I am using vnc4server and openssh-server installed from the repositories using Synaptic.

Debian :: Drag & Drop File On Bash Script?

Jul 29, 2011

On Windows, I can drop file on batch script file, then dropped file is accepted as script parameter and script is automatically executed. Trying the same in Nautilus it seems like not possible. Is there some other way of using this approach in Debian?I hope it's clear what I'm after - I don't want to write Nautilus scripts as workaround and want to avoid: - opening terminal - cd to bash script - type script name andmeter file then executeinstead I would like already mentioned, drop filename expected as parameter to bash script, and then script to execute automatically.

Ubuntu Installation :: Copy Entire /home Directory To 11.04?

Jun 8, 2011

I installed a new 11.04 on my Thinkpad in place of the old 10.10 system, so it replaced the old /home with a new empty one. But I had previously done a partition copy of the original 10.10, complete with /home to a spare HDD so now I can copy that /home in place of the new empty /home. What's the best way to do that? Should I use 'dd'? Should I use Nautilus? Or should I partition-copy that copy of the 10.10 onto available space on the thinkpad 11.04, then manipulate the partitions to consolidate? Maybe create a separate /home partition?

I called Tigerdirect this morning and ordered a Hitachi 500GB hard drive model# OF10381, here's my dilemma. I really want to just do away the old hard drive and use the new one but it seems as if there's not a real good way to copy the entire hard drive including the OS. I have been told that you can use a program such as norton ghost to do it. I do though have a Windows 7 disc, I am going to use a SATA host PCI card to connect the new HD. if I should back everything up from the old HD except for the OS. And then unplug the old HD and just do a fresh install with the Windows 7 disc.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Drag And Drop Is Slow?

The GUI on nautilus is painfully slow to work with. Every time I drag and drop a file I have to wait for the nautilus to slowly shade the whole file window . . . . . . . before it stops and lets me drop the file. I searched for a way to turn off this "animation", but found nothing.

I've tried pcman, but it wouldn't open my files. Thunar insists on copying files instead of just moving them.

Ubuntu :: Drag And Drop Icons Between Views

I have just installed ubuntu 10.04 after using 8.10 until now. I have two sepparate screens (NOT Xinerama). The problems is that I cannot drag and drop icons on the desktop betwen the 2 screens. On ubuntu 8.10 this was working perfectly.

I do not want to use Xinerama because it is not what I want - when I change workspaces, it changes on both screens, one one screen I have to click exactly on taskbar to minimize/maximize application, so I do not whant to use Xinerama.

So do you have any ideeea how I can have back the feature from 8.10 to be able to drag and drop icons from one screen to another ? I have a sepparate home partition and old settings were loaded into this ubuntu, i erased settings from .gnome, .nautilus etc and still doesn work.

When I try to set up folders/directories to use for data using Ctrl+Shift+n nothing happens. The File menu does not have the option to create new directories. I cannot drag and drop anything onto it. The properties shows root as the owner. how to make the partition usable or direct me to where the instructions might be? After going through 400+ pages of a book on using the command line, I haven't found anything to deal with this.

It is impossible to drag and drop (URLs) across separate X-Screens.My setup is as follows (see also xorg. conf attached):: 2 GPUs with 3 Monitors attached (which excludes Xinerama and the like) Every Monitor has a separate X-Screen Whenever I try to drag an URL (e.g. a file form nautilus) from screen #1 to screen #2 this is what happens when crossing the border: The Cursor appears on the left side of both of the Screens. On screen #1 the URL (the files Symbol) stays attached to it, on screen #2 it is simply the blank cursor. Dropping the URL drops it onto screen #1, so the one I'm coming from.

OpenSUSE :: VLC Integration In 11.4 - Cannot Drag And Drop Files

Mar 12, 2011

With a default 11.4 (64bit) installation with Gnome - and using the 11.4 one click installer on
VideoLAN - VLC: Free streaming and multimedia solutions for all OS! - the 11.3 integration seems to have worked better.

The first issue is that it's no longer automatically integrated into the right click context menu of movie files.

This integration happened in 11.3.

The second, which I think is user error but I really cannot get it to work is dragging and dropping files does not work.

-> Open Nautilus
-> Navigate to folder with movie files
-> Open VLC
-> Click on a file in Nautilus and try and drag it onto VLC

The VLC is hidden during the file click and drag, so a drag to the bottom panel is required to try and activate VLC - however, VLC is never activated. I have tried different positions on screen but still over the VLC entry to try and activate it, but nothing happens.

This same sequence on 11.3 correctly activates VLC so I can drag and drop.

A workaround on 11.4 is to make VLC "Always on top" via the right click menu on the VLC title bar.

All rolls well, but I'd like to have the component be "followed" - if there is a drag on the component, the form should be visible. I'd like to make a puzzle where the player can see the perimeter of the piece to see if it fits where (s)he'd want to drop it. Before I delve into the tons of code, I'd like to know if that (the following) can be done.
