Whenever I try to install or remove a program, I get the following error

When i try installing anything i get errors, for example when i try to install somthing from ubuntu software center i get this.

I want to install php-soap on centos 5.2 server. When i run the command, yum install php-soap, i get the error:
php-soap-5.1.6-24.el5_4.5.i386 from updates has depsolving problems --> Missing Dependency: php-common = 5.1.6-24.el5_4.5 is needed by package php-soap-5.1.6-24.el5_4.5.i386 (updates) Error: Missing Dependency: php-common = 5.1.6-24.el5_4.5 is needed by package php-soap-5.1.6-24.el5_4.5.i386 (updates) You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem You could try running: package-cleanup --problems package-cleanup --dupes rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest The php common file is not actually missing, its there with the exact name. The problem seems to be that the php-common file is installed from some other repository, thats y it is creating dependency problem. The only solution i found is to remove the current php-common file and install it again, but then lot of programs get uninstalled with it, which is y am afraid of doing that, since its a vps, and some 10 sites are working on that.

I just installed ubuntu 10.10 x64 It worked okay for awhile, but now everytime I startup I get this error message:

I need to delete all *.trc files that are older than 30 days and I am getting a "Argument list too long" error. There are other files that should not be deleted which is why I am using the "*.trc" and newer files need to be kept as well. I have seen other postings but they do not cover both of the conditions. Below are 2 of the many attempts at doing this but I cannot get this to work.
find *.trc -mtime +31 -print| xargs rm -f {}
find *.trc -mtime +31 -print -exec rm -f {} ;

whether the command-line tool "mysql" comes with mysql-server or mysql-client (I installed both at once, so I have no idea). It occurs to me that this is a good opportunity to learn more about linux package management.
I've tried saying "dpkg -L mysql-server", but it only lists the files in /usr/share/docs files for some reason. I'm sure there's got to be files elsewhere. Am I way off base?

i installed slackware 12.2. I am having a problem with the slackpkg dialog box. When I turn off the dialog box in slackpkg.conf slackpkg works fine. when I try to use the dialog box I get the following error screen: Looking for jre in package list.

Anyone know if a more complete poppler-devel can be found for CentOS 5.5? There seems to be an enormous number of missing files from poppler-devel (page.h and PDFDoc.h are just two examples) resulting in applications that require it refusing to compile.

I am using 9.10, 64bit. Firefox 3.5.7. When I open a fresh instance of Firefox, I can start typing common addresses in the address field, and it will give me a list to choose from based on what I typed. However If I let the screen saver kick in, I lose that ability, until I close all open firefox windows and reopen them.

I'm trying to use a bibtex style file from the texlive-publishing package, but bibtex cant seem to find the .bib file even though I've tried everything from placing it in the same directory to exporting the BST to:
export BSTINPUTS=/usr/share/texmf-texlive/bibtex/bib/IEEEtran/
But bibtex still cant find my file.

I am using ubuntu 9.10 and I updated by ubuntu machine. It updated but at the end it gave me a message that "You have new mail in /var/mail/root". When I checked it via the command "tail /var/mail/root" it showed me this.

On my laptop (Dell Studio 1745) w/500GB HD, I have a common data partition shared by openSUSE. Fedora, FreeBSD, and windoze 7 currently. I would like to encrypt this partition (/Common) and have it accessible from all distros either with a passphrase key in /root or on a flash key. I've been researching on the web and there seem to be several possibilities using eCryptfs, Luks, cryptosetup, or any of several methods.
My question is, what have people here used and how well did it work? Also, what was required for setup (I'll probably have to explain/teach it to my wife who is technology challenged-but I still love her anyway) and my daughter who's just getting into linux. I would like to be able to keep the entire directory on the hard drive but also have the ability to copy it to external USB device for transport.

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right section. But when i start the Package Updater it get's a (Error resolving dependencies). The Details in the error are: Missing Dependency: liblzo.so.1 is needed by package mplayer Missing Dependency: libdvdread.so.3 is needed by package lsdvd Missing Dependency: libcucul.so.0 is needed by package mplayer Missing Dependency: libdvdread.so.3 is needed by package gstreamer-plugins-ugly
What do i do? I'm thinking i have to get and install/download these package's but cant find them tried regular searching the web and using Yum. Cant find any of them to install to fix this issue.

I don't know if this is the right place to do this so I will try. I have noticed a lot of posts around the web with the same problems, so I guess this is something that is common, you think it would be fixed by now but anyways. Almost constantly when I try to install a new package with yum in my system it almost always gives me a dependency error, this is the latest one when I try to install HTOP:
