Dec 16, 2010

i recently downloaded wubi and attempted to install ubuntu. everything went smoothly and the first time i tried to boot up ubuntu, the purple desktop background came up and ubuntu finished its installation. then i had to select which operating system to use (XP or newly Ubuntu), and when i choose ubuntu i get the following message:

"Choose an operating system to boot from:[XP is the only OS listed]

Use the up and down keys to select which entry is highlighted. Press enter to boot the selected OS. 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for a command-line. ESC to return to previous menu."after i select XP, the error message "error: unkown command 'drivemap'." displays briefly in the upper left hand corner. I am currently running Windows XP.

Ubuntu Installation :: Not Booting - Show 'unkown Command' & No Grub

May 3, 2010

just tried downloading the latest version of ubuntu and install it on my laptop got an error message at the end of the installation (an I/O error, dev sr0,sector something) now when booting i got grub rescue. the only command working are ls and set. commands such as 'linux' or 'boot' show 'unkown command'

ls (hd0,1) or ls /boot/
results in
unknown filesystem

I tried to reinstall grub using the 3 different methods as in [URL] got no error message while doing so except when typing sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda it told me something about being unable to locate ubuntu or something along those lines - sorry i thought i'd remember .. running out of option is there a possibility to download the latest pre 10.04 stable version?

Ubuntu :: Ext4 Partition's Filesystem Is Unkown?

Oct 5, 2010

I have recently updated my ubuntu 9.10 install to 10.04. And with that I've tried to install snow leopard on my computer so i can dual boot between them.the install was successful, but grub2 (that worked fine) wouldn't see the OS X install on its own partition. so i tried reinstalling it, like you do after you install windows and it would remove grub as the bootloader. That didn't work and i got a lot of messages that it wouldnt work because my partitioning (or something like that) is GPT. by the end of it i didn't have grub installed at all!so i started playing around with GParted, and while doing that i also put a bios_grub flag on my main ubuntu install partition, thinking that it would force grub to load from that partition. But that just gave me the GRUB Rescue prompt when trying to boot.

So i unchecked the bios_grub flag. and now it doesn't boot to anywhere and when inserting the ubuntu live cd i cant even see the ubuntu ext4 partition and mount it.Gparted says that its a partition that its File System is undetectable and unknown. Is there any solution that will allow me just to mount that partition and copy files from it? (unfortunatelly my backups are a little older than i would like them to be)Heres what boot info script gives me: (the partition that i need is sda1)

Security :: Tips To Run Unkown-source-binary?

Feb 27, 2010

I got some binaries from internet (amule), but am afraid of using them, exposing my system. Since some run long simulations, it is not desirable to run in slow VM.

What do you gurus say if I run it as a new user? So the binaries would just be able to read and execute my binutils... Is that harmfull?

General :: Ubuntu 10.10 And Command Line Scripts - Error - Android: Command Not Found

Mar 26, 2011

I know my way around MS Windows much better, but I just don't feel right trying to program something for Android on a Microsoft operating system. I am interested in Android programming so I followed the instructions on [URL] to install the environment on my computer...

I just installed the JDK, SDK, Eclipse successfully (or I assume):

* When I get to Step 4 where I'm supposed to run 'android' it will not run. I get the error message "android: command not found" (I am definitely in the right directory).

** When I double-click it in nautilus, it opens up in gedit. I can set the permissions in nautilus (through the properties - Allow executing file as a program) and get it to work,

My system:

Intel i7
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
eclipse 3.6.2

VFS: unable to mount root FS on unkown-block(202,17)

I have a Dell xps with a dual core, 8 gigs ram, a primary hard drive with vista on it, and a secondary with linux in its future. It starts loading vmlinuz but ends up with the kernel panic before anything else. I am able to install earlier cores (5-8) and vista recognizes the ram just fine.

Programming :: Find Command With Standard Error Output And Mail Error File

Nov 11, 2010

We make everyday a DB Mysql backup on Linux redhat Enterprise. We are using a bash shell script (and putting it in the crontab) to execute it automatically everyday. We added a line to this script telling, once the backup has completed, to find old backup files (stored on hard disk after each backup) older than x days to remove them. We use the find command (search for file type) with the mtime option and in combination with rm command. Everything runs ok but we also want to add some new code to the same line: If find command cannot find anything or fails, for example if it cannot delete file or fails, send the error message (standard error output) to an error file (like error000001 and increasing) and mail the errorxxxx file to an email address for example to admin@companyname.com. What would be the code for this issue to add it to our find command in the same bash shell script??

W: GPG error: [URL] maverick Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783
W: Failed to fetch [URL] Hash Sum mismatch

When I for example try to install the gcc I also get weird feedback:
gcc is already the newest version.

I thought it was that they where already installed on the comp, however, the computer keeps telling me that gcc is not installed. I am not quite sure what to do. I am using the latest version of ubuntu (10.10).

Ubuntu :: SMART Command Failed. Grub Error 16

Mar 13, 2011

I have a XP/ubuntu 8.04 dual boot setup and I walked away from the PC for a minute and when I returned I had "SMART command failed error. Press f2 to resume" on-screen. I pressed f2 and it went to grub boot menu which gave error 16 and froze. I ran Ubuntu live cd which appears to freeze after selecting try without install(latest attempt appears to freeze on ubuntu logo loading up).

I ran Hiren CD miniXP but the My Computer doesn't recognize the disk nor does it appear in the disk management console. HDTune and a partition tool doesn't see the disk.I ran Hiren CD linux recovery but that loops with IO error. My latest attempt is running Ubuntu 10.04 Live cd which is appears to be loading, slowly at least.I have an external hard drive and usb stick ready to copy to. I also have my laptop. It will be greatly appreciated if someone can tell me how to get my files off the drive.

edit: just pressed esc and these lines keep appearing.

Ubuntu :: Error 17 - But 'sudo Grub' - Command Not Found

Jul 30, 2010

I have a guy in my office who was using an old version of ubuntu and he tried upgrading to 10 but now he's getting grub error 17. I Google this and everyone suggests reinstalling grub starting with opening a shell and typing 'sudo grub'.

However, I get 'command not found' in response to that. I've tried looking for the location of grub so I could try 'sudo /sbin/grub' and such, but I don't see it anywhere.

Also, I'm using a version 9.10 Live CD at the moment because I can't find out how to disable the drmraid option on the version 10 CD (necessary to detect the hard drives which, although they are on a raid controller are not configured as an array but separate drives).
