Ubuntu :: Error - Superblock Has An Invalid Journal (inode Clear? <y>

Apr 7, 2011

I was trying to move my home partition on Ubuntu, and the computer hibernated on me. I restarted it up on the live disk to survey the damage, to find that the home partition, according to fsck, "Superblock has an invalid journal (inode Clear? <y>"

It cannot be mounted, either.

Server :: Mounting Drive Bad Superblock Error Wrong Fs Type, Bad Option, Bad Superblock On /dev/sda1?

Jun 16, 2010

I have a x64 OpenSUSE server with two hard drivers installed. The first one is used for the / and /home partitions and the other is for backups. Ironically enough it is the backup hard drive I am having trouble with. I was having trouble writting to the drive and unmounted it to preform a fchsk, however now when ever I try to mount it I get the following error:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Does anyone know who I can repair the drive and retrive data?

OpenSUSE Install :: Error Message Was 'bad Magic Number, Corrupt Superblock' With A Suggested Command To Try Another Superblock?

May 14, 2011

After several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. What am I doing wrong?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Error With External Journal?

Im using Ubuntu 10.04 64bits with external journal.

/dev/sda1 is the "/" partition.
/dev/sdb1 is the external journal

Everything is working fine, but if a new HD is added (like dev/sdc), I have a boot error, initramfs error!

Why this is happening? How can I add a new HD without error?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: I/o Error Ext3 Journal

Apr 10, 2010

I have a 500Gb external disk (esata) used a part of a backup cycle. I tried to mount it for the next backup cycle and an i/o error was detected in the ext3 journal. I fixed the bad block but that lost the data in the block and ran fsck.ext3. This resulted in a damaged file system message and a scan of the disk and fsck finished ok. The disk mounts rw. I am not really sure if I should reformat this disk. I have copied the backups off the disk and in any case there are later backups. Reformatting is not a problem but takes time and I would prefer not to do it if it is not required but I want a clean file system

Debian :: Laptop Will Not Boot - Error Loading Journal

Apr 13, 2011

I have a laptop with important data (no backup) that will not boot. It's a vanilla Debian 6 amd64 with dm-crypt LUKs encryption to a internal sata drive partitioned sda1 sda2 sda5 with lvm2 formatted ext3 for sda5. The symptom is that upon powering up, it progresses (albeit slowly now) past grub, to the point where the the "Enter passphrase" prompt occurs. After entering the phrase, it pauses with "Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while". It seems to work, but then gives me errors like:

ata3.00: status: {DRDY ERR }
ata3.00: error: { UNC }
ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0
ata3.00: BMDMA stat 0x25
ata3.00: failed command READ DMA EXT
...some more stuff...
end_request: I/O error:, dev sda, sector 308725410
JBD: Failed to read block at offset 24711
EXT3-fs: error loading journal
and it drops me to Busybox ash shell. My impression is that the sda1 partition with the kernel is intact, but the sda2 or sda5 is bad.

What else I have done:
1. Removed problem disk and installed it into another known good laptop. Issue occurs with new laptop. So, I would assume hd is bad, laptop is good.
2. Booted from hd using grub rescue mode. Similar errors occurred.
3. Using suspect laptop and hd, booted into a live cd environment, which attempted to mount the encrypted drive. It prompted for the passphrase, but said it could not mount the drive.

Fedora :: Error - Ext3_get_inode_block: Bad Inode Number

Dec 16, 2009

I am getting this error every night at 4am (right about when the cron.daily runs). when it does this, it remounts the filesystem read only. In the AM I get yelled at by users. all it takes is an fsck to fix the problem, but it does it every night. I have tried to rebuild the journal by removing the has_journal flag, running an fsck, and then re-adding the journal... same problem.. and its always the same inode.

Ubuntu Installation :: Superblock Error In Gparted - Can't Run Dumbe2fs - E2fsck

Mar 8, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed (installed xubuntu on top and that is what I run but should not be an issue) on a laptop and it runs fine but I am giving it to my daughter so I wanted to install windows as well, and dual boot, so she could play a couple of games that she has. When I booted with gparted cd it shows the information icon beside my partition (have 2 one swap sda1 and one for ubuntu sda2) and everything I attempt to do tells me the superblock and all backups are bad. I am not sure how this can be since the system boots and runs fine.

In gparted I can't run dumbe2fs or e2fsck without getting the error but when I do dumpe2fs in the system it seems fine. I am pretty sure I used ext2 or ext3 as a filesytem as it is an older laptop so ext2 is what I usually run with. Maybe I just let ubuntu install whatever it wanted this time, I can't remember for sure which I chose during this install. have been backing up all the data to move it off anyway so reinstalling won't be a big issue. I had checked out how to reinstall grub2 after doing the windows install so thought I was all prepared but apparently I was not that prepared.

Jul 18, 2011

1st. I lost my usb drives. Im using Puppy Studio(Lucid, Full HDD install, latest ver) on a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S201... My 1st Linux treasure... Anyway... I was recording audio thru audacity. Shutdown. L8r started and inserted a Flash drive and the icon never showed even though I used it hours prior with no issues. The drives are working fine meaning I can access the data on other devices. Now the newb... I cant find the USB info anywhere. i followed System-Status & Configure-Hardware info-Devices-USB devices and theres nothing there. The optical drive & sda1 are registered but the flash drives are not. Does it sound like my 2 USB ports are dead? My mouse & keyboard dont register either!

2nd. B4 today reboot was the only command I knew (so sad...) but I learned dmesg and tried that and dmesg reads

Ext2-fs (sda1): error: ext2_Lookup: deleted inode referenced 83359

Basically I now want to move my music but I have no working usb ports. And Its been frustrating trying to figure out what the dmesg means when today is the 1st time I opened a terminal!

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub And 9.04 - Error "invalid Command" Or "invalid Execution Format"

Aug 16, 2011

Bottom Line: Dvd Drive died in my toshiba laptop and it was replaced (not before tech for some reason reformatted the Win7 partition... which was 100% un-needed, but thats beside the point now. I redid win7 (the tech installed vista) and am TRYING to "redo grub". Facts: The Slackware AND Ubuntu Partitions ARE STILL THERE and when i use SuperGrub Boot CD (which doesn't restore my grub by itself) to boot into slackware, i can see ALL THE CONTENT of both Linuxes still there including grub on ubuntu partition

(Tri-Boot: Ubuntu, Slackware, and WIn7) I had it working for two years or so, SO i know this "setup" works fine. I am A) Trying to do this as simply as possible. B) Trying to avoid the need to download a 800MB ISO (as seen for this issue on this forum) and trying not to have to reformat Ubuntu Partition (though I have the .Debs I have downloaded for it backed up ... all 1.7GB of them) I have /dev/sda1 as win7, /dev/sda2 as Slack and /dev/sda3 as Ubuntu (which contains Grub Legacy).. Every command I do seems to result in an error like "invalid command" or "invalid Execution format " (i think that second one is right) type errors. I compiled (awhile back) a few kernels for Slackware, but feel goofy that I cant figure what i this out (what i thought was going to be a "2 minute" fix)
