View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m. I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files). Of course this is a
-first-find the *.m files script and
-then copy the files into the hard disk.
What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk. As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary. So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has.
I have 2 ubuntu's: 1 on my ineternal hard drive, 1 on my external
When I startup without my ext drive =>GRUB error 21.
And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.
I'm mostly a linux-idiot but I tried to get an update for a laptop that was running xubuntu. Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?

I first considered just adding a slave drive, but thought it might be better just to copy all of the content from the old drive to the new drive. Then, make the new drive as the master and the old as a backed up copy slave drive.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! The hard drive I have is a Seagate FreeAgent desk 500GB
What is the recommended way to backup all files to an external hard drive? Should it be done through CLI or should a third party program be used?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an external harddrive of 500GB. It's almost fully loaded with TV series and movies. Nautilus says there's 60 GB remaining space. I just downloaded some movies, and copied it to this external hard drive. And here's the strange part, after I did this I only see a very small subset of all the movies I stored on that harddrive in nautilus. With 500 GB almost full, you can imagine there are quite some movies on it, but I only see 12 of them in nautilus.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI bought a new 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive and mounted it in an external enclosure for use as an external backup drive. I had a whale of a time getting it formatted (ref post), but finally did by putting the bare drive into a laptop and used Ubuntu to partition and format as part of installing. Then I remounted the bare drive back into the enclosure and sure enough now I can now see the drive.
So now I want to erase the files from the backup drive. Problem is, Ubuntu won't let me delete or add any files. In Nautlis, if I select the files and "right click", Move to Trash is grayed out. If I press the delete button, nothing happens. If I try to copy a new file to the backup drive it says "permission denied". If I go into the Properties .> Permissions for the drive everything is grayed out so I can't change the permission. It also says "You are not the owner so you cannot change permissions".
I am running dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7 but have decided to ditch windows and go permanently with Ubuntu. How do I save my data files (email addresses etc.) to an external hard drive for downloading back on to my laptop when I have reformated it.

Mainly when trying to copy files to the hard drive. The only thing i've succeded in installing was Ubuntu server and windows XP. I have tried with ACPI off and all the other special atributes. I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
