Ubuntu :: Unity Bar On Side And Top Disappeared?

Apr 30, 2011

I just upgraded to 11.04 today, and was playing around with the compiz-fusion settings. The first thing I checked was the fade to desktop box, and that froze up my computer. I let it sit for a little bit, but eventually got bored and just turned off my computer via the power button. When I started it up, both the tool bar on top and the launcher on the side had disappeared, and I don't have a clue how to get them back.

Ubuntu :: Unity Has Disappeared / Get It Back?

May 31, 2011

When logging in, I suddenly got a message saying "It appears you do not have the hardware to run Unity", and it initialized the old GNOME 2 desktop.

Ofcourse I have the hardware to run Unity (an NVIDIA GTX 580), and it has worked normally until now...

Now Unity won't come back, even after logging out / in or rebooting. The video driver works normally and NVIDIA X Server Settings does not show that there's anything wrong with my video card or drivers.

Is this a bug? Did this happen to anyone else? How do I get the Unity desktop back?

Ubuntu :: Unity Tool Bar Has Disappeared

Jun 25, 2011

My unity toolbar has disappeared. The old style ubuntu panels have appeared in its place. This was happening on occasion before, but restarting the computer would get rid of it. This time unity has been gone for about a week, through many reboots, driver re-installations, etc.I just installed a new graphics card, which is working fine on the windows partition. Unity would fail to load on occasion with the old card, too. I know the new card works with Ubuntu, because Unity was working fine with it for about a week.

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. The old card was a GeForce 7900 GT, the new one is a low-profile Sparkle GeForce 8400 GS.

Ubuntu :: Installed Software In Unity Disappeared

Jun 17, 2011

I originally had the nvidia driver form the nvidia website installed instead of the = one from the repository. I uninstalled it and used apt-get to install nvidia-current. My video works fine but when ever I click the applications button all of my installed software is gone under all applications. I can still access my programs it's just under all applications nothing shows up, this is annoying. Is their any way to fix it or should I just switch back the driver?

Ubuntu Servers :: Eth0 Disappeared / No Network Connection - Resolve That?

Aug 8, 2010

After rebooting, I found that the server couldn't see the network. The machine has dual gigabit ethernet (eth0 and eth1). eth0 is connected to the internet, but disappeared. ifconfig used to show eth0, eth1, and lo, but now only shows eth1 and lo. If I boot into rescue mode I can get internet and ifconfig returns eth0 and lo. Any ideas on how to fix this?
I apologize in advance if I ask any noob questions. I'm not a very experienced Linux user.

Ubuntu :: Enabled Desktop Cube In Unity - Side / Top Bar Disappeared

Apr 30, 2011

I just upgraded to unity and everything is fine. Then I accidentally enabled Desktop Cube and Cube Rotation. Suddenly, the top part of windows that you normally use to drag the window or close it etc. started disappearing. In a panic, I rebooted. Upon reboot I found myself in an even bigger mess than I could have imagined. Not only did this fail to fix the problem previously mentioned, it also caused the sidebar and the ubuntu bar at the top to disappear. Desktop icons still show, and my cursor is fully functional, but other than that, my system is unusable.

Ubuntu Installation :: Global Menu Bar Seems To Have Disappeared In Unity (natty)

Jun 23, 2011

after a lot of testing and tweaking done in natty 64 bit while running as live usb, i decided to install it clean on my laptop. everything is working fine (courtesy the time i spent to get things work in live usb)
i installed gnome shell too and now have an option of unity / gnome shell and classic.

today being the 2nd day, i got the following problems.

a) the global menu that was being displayed in unity is not working. its funny to note that firefox global menu is working but not for nautilus or any other apps.

b) conky is displayed in unity and classic desktop but not in gnome-shell. i also followed this link to get it working in start up = > [URL]

still not working. when i issue the top command, i can see that conky is listed in the processes but not displayed..

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher Number Shortcuts Have Disappeared While Holding Super In Natty

May 10, 2011

I've just noticed this morning that the number shortcuts that normally appear when holding the super key to show the Unity launcher are not there. The s, a and f shortcuts remain however. Also, just pushing the numbers that should be there doesn't do anything.

I've just upgraded from Maverick to Natty and things were mostly working fine until this. I'm not sure what changes have happened between now and then and I don't remember any major changes in that period.

I just tried to take a screenshot and opened GIMP to save it and I checked again and they have reappeared. So, I guess the new question is why did this happen? How can I solve this problem if it happens in the future? Should I mark this as solved? I don't really understand what happened either way.

2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Ubuntu :: Unity - Mythtv Or How To Hide Unity Launcher

May 8, 2011

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.

However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).

This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

Ubuntu :: Used 11.04 And Now 10.04 Has Disappeared?

May 24, 2011

my 27GB HD, I mess about, install various distros and OSes. Before today I had fedora on it, but it doesn't matterOn my 76GB HD, I had Ubuntu 10.04, which I use most of the time.On my 250GB HD I have Ubuntu 11.04I usually use 10.04 because the graphics drivers on 11.04 don't work for me. I wanted to play a windows game, but couldn't get it working on Wine 1.2 on Ubuntu 10.04. I remembered I had Wine 1.3 on my Ubuntu 11.04, so I booted that OS.

It had been a month since I last used 11.04, so there were 180MB of updates which I installed. Then I tried my windows game in Wine. I still couldn't get it to work, so I gave up and rebooted my PC so I could go back to my main OS, Ubuntu 10.04.But I couldn't.Apparently something I did above was enough to mess up GRUB, and it wouldn't boot any OS. I think it couldn't find my hard drives or something. GRUB just stopped working.

I read a few guides about reinstalling GRUB from the liveCD, but I couldn't understand them. So I thought I'd just install Ubuntu 10.04 on my 27GB hard drive, which then should install GRUB along with it and automatically find my other OSes, Ubuntu 10.04 on my 76GB HD and Ubuntu 11.04 on my 250GB.I did this, and GRUB now works, but for some reason it can only see Ubuntu 10.04 which I just installed on my 27GB HD and Ubuntu 11.04 on my 250GB HD, and not Ubuntu 10.04 on my 76GB HD, which is my main OS!Does anybody know why and how I can fix this?TL;DR I have three hard drives. Ubuntu 10.04 on my 27GB HD and my 76GB HD, and Ubuntu 11.04 on my 250GB hard drive. For some reason GRUB can only see Ubuntu 10.04 on my 27GB HD and not my 76GB hard drive.

Ubuntu :: Log Off Button Disappeared?

Jul 13, 2010

Basically what happened is that I installed ubuntu 10.04 a few weeks ago. At some point, there were two gwibber icons in my task bar, one covering my "log off" button. (Not sure what the term for that is.) I restarted and it was fine, then it appeared again. I then shut gwibber via console, and since then my log off thing has not yet reappeared, i.e. I am constantly shutting down in console. What can I do to have that button back?

Ubuntu :: One Of Partitions Has Disappeared

Nov 9, 2010

I currently have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 in my computer, and I was booting normally with grub until last night. I tried to install Adobe Photoshop into Windows and after that I went on to reboot my system. When it restarted, grub showed a message like this:

error: no such partition
grub rescue>

I've followed some advice regarding this issue and I got this running the bash script (boot_info_script0555.sh) mentioned in some related posts. Here is my RESULTS.txt output. After a quick view, I think the biggest problem is that one of my Linux partitions has disappeared, and I don't know how to recover it.

Ubuntu :: Network Manager Is Disappeared

May 2, 2010

I was setting up my internet connection in Ubuntu 10.04, while I had to reboot. After the reboot Network icon in the top-right corner was disappeared! Really, I can't understand why.I tried to open synaptic, totally remove network-manager and network-manager-gnome and then I tried to reinstall them. After the reboot, still, there wasn't Network icon.I tried to press ALT+F2 and insert "nm-applet --sm-disable" but nothing happends.

I tried to right-click on upper-toolbar and then to go on "add panel" but I can't find out network manager (or similar). If I write on my terminal "sudo nm-applet" it says that there's already an nm-applet running but where? And how can I open it?On System/Administration/Network Tools (I don't know if this is the exactly translation...) all network parameters are 0 such us on IPs. Of course internet connection does not work! How can I restore Network Manager?

Last friday (or perhaps thursday) I did the first update (it was big, ~60megs), and since then I have lost my printers. They are no longer listed on the "Printers" information panel. In fact, I can no longer add printers (the option is grayed out). In fact, the only option I can select is the connect to server. If I try local, I get the error that the server cannot be found.

EDIT: the original printers are networked printers, accessed via an IP address.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Disappeared From A Panel?

May 28, 2010

take it as read im still learning Ubuntu and occassionally do stupid things, like click on the unsubcribe buttons on unwanted email.

Did that and for some obscure reason i lost the default firefox icon from the top task bar. I could make a launcher on the desktop but i failed to find the firefox exe. I did get it to show hidden files, found the firefox folder but no exe file or similiar to launch.

Would someone be so kind as to tell me where to drill so i can at least put the firefox launcher on the desktop. As a fill in im using chromium, and i did find its folder hidden in firefox's.

ie... [username]/mozilla/firefox/chromium ??

Ubuntu :: Bottom Tool Bar Disappeared?

May 28, 2010

I've only been using Ubuntu for a few months, a good friend turned me on to it and I definitely like it better than any version of Windows out there, but I'm definitely still learning about it.

I may have clicked on something, but my bottom tool bar totally disappeared and I'm not sure how to get it back. Before it disappeared, none of the windows I had opened were showing up on it either.

To reiterate, I'm not sure what I clicked on to make it disappear, for the most part it just did... :-/

I was using the 9.10 distro and just upgraded to the 10.04 distro. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it either.
