Ubuntu :: Xinerama With Triple Monitors - 11.04

Jun 21, 2011

Did a new install with a system that worked well on 10, with Xinerama. I have nvidia 9500 GT cards, but I dont think its driver related. Screen 0 is the center Screen 2 is to the right And Screen 3 is to the left.. When Xinerama is disabled things work flawlessly, but not using Xinerama is a killer to me. The nvidia configuration utility generates the following xorg.conf when Xinerama is disabled. It gets the locations right and the mouse moves correctly between screens.

Hardware :: Some NVidia 8400s - Triple Monitors Setup?

Jan 21, 2010

I have been trying my little heart out to get triple monitors setup but I just cant seem to do it. So I have decided that I will quit out on my current video cards and pick up a few new ones and see where this takes me. The cost effective ones seemed to be some 8400s, one would be a PCI-express and one would be on the normal PCI but both are the same GPU. So with this setup would X be able to run all 3 screens with composting so I can run compiz and stuff. And have it one extended x session not 3 separate ones? Specifically I was looking at [URL].

Hardware :: Triple Monitors Xorg With AMD&NVIDIA: XRANDR And Xinerama Not Working?

Mar 24, 2011

I'm trying to set up a tri monitor setup. Unfortunately I must use 2 cards, one an AMD HD4350 and a PCI Geforce FX200. (Old skool I know) Due to the restrictions, I am forced to use the open source drivers (else nvidia glx will clash).

1: Use XRANDR to span the displays (this is what I did previous to the introduction of the third monitor and nvidia card to my system) I tried to do this, by setting up a second X screen on the NVIDIA card, disabling Xinerama; but after much googling I can't figure out the syntax for panning across 2 screens (X screens) in XRANDR, even tho it's >1.3, which supposedly supports multi card output.

2:Use Xinerama, sacrificing randr, and composite extensions. I also attempted to do this, with some limited success. I could get the NVIDIA screen to be right of the ATI, but I couldn't get 2 independent outputs running on the ATI card, even with "ZapohHeads" appended to one of the device sections for my ATI card.

Ubuntu :: Using Multiple Monitors With Guest In VirtualBox

Nov 30, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 x64 as a guest in VirtualBox on top of Windows 7. I recently bought a second monitor, and I want to set up my Ubuntu guest to use both monitors. I configured VirtualBox to give two displays to the VM, and two windows are displayed when I run the VM, however, the Ubuntu guest only uses the primary screen and does nothing with the second--the second screen is just black.

When I go to the monitor settings, only the one monitor is detected (as an "unknown monitor") I have the latest guest additions installed and the driver under System-Administration->Additional Drivers is shown as installed and working correctly. I don't have any issues with the single display--it shows in the correct resolution, and works fine if I set it to fullscreen or seamless mode. Any thoughts on getting Ubuntu to detect the other screen?

Ubuntu :: Multiple Screens - Grandr - Settings For Dual Monitors Lost At Restart

Jun 8, 2010

The 'Multiple Screens' tool, aka grandr, is very handy for setting up my dual monitors. But restarting my system restores the monitor setup to the (crummy) default settings. Is there a way to save these settings and make sure they are always applied when the OS boots? Putting these settings in my xorg.conf would be fine, but I'm not sure where or in what form the settings generated by grandr might be located, or if they're at all xorg.conf compatible.

General :: How To Disable Other Monitors While Running Games In Wine

Feb 24, 2011

My current setup is:
* Dual GTS 250 video cards
* 3 Monitors
* Used nvidia-settings to run each monitor as a separate x session
* This is all running on Linux Mint Debian Edition

When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming.

This is the output of my xrandr for each of my monitors (I get a different xrandr depending on which X session (i.e. monitor) I try xrandr on):
Primary Monitor
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 1920 x 1080
default connected 1920x1080+0+0 0mm x 0mm .....

Second Monitor
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 1: minimum 320 x 240, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm .....

Third Monitor
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 2: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm .....

I could not figure out from the above outputs what I should be using for the --output flag. I assumed it was default and tried the following:
~ $ xrandr --output default --off
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
But as you can see, it didn't work. Additionally, since all three xrandr outputs list the monitor as default, I wouldn't know how to turn my other monitors back on afterwards (if the command did work). Do you know what might be wrong in my nvidia-settings or what else I could try?

Ubuntu :: Running VirtualBox Without Being Dependent On VNC

Jul 22, 2011

I currently run VNC with Gnome to run VirtualBox for my VPS's, but the problem I'm facing is that occasionally, the VNC session will die.

Ubuntu - 11.04 Server Edition.

I mean, randomly just die and then through up an error (specially connection refused 10061). The problem caused by this is that after I reset the VNC session, VirtualBox will have stopped and in turn the VPS's.

Is there any way I could run VirtualBox without being dependent on VNC + Gnome? Or at least, beable to stop VNC is dying on me?

If you require any more information, just ask and I'll reply within 5 minutes.

Ubuntu :: WindowsXP Running Slow In VirtualBox

Apr 1, 2011

I have WindowsXP installed under VirtualBox. Most of the time this works fine, but sometimes when I boot it up, it runs so incredibly slowly that it is unusable. My only solution to this has been to copy out the important data, restore the vdi file from backup and reboot. This usually solves the problem until next time. "top" shows that vbox is taking 35% of the memory (which is the amount I have allocated) and about 102% of my dual core's CPU. Everything else is running OK at the time.

Fedora :: F12 - Can't Get VirtualBox Running ?

Dec 29, 2009

I've been trying to get a converted virtual disk running in VirtualBox for the past several days. The VM begins to boot in a window but never gets past a black field. Until today the title bar would always change from "running" to "suspended" and just hang there. Now it just keeps saying "running" but never boots so I'm thinking the virtual disk may have become corrupted from repeated shutdowns without ever booting.

The User Manual at VirtualBox.org is of little help since it appears to assume you're using their packages. They also make references to utilities or scripts like "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv" that aren't even in the latest version so I think it hasn't been updated in a while.

There doesn't appear to be many hints in the Vbox.log either - couldn't find a way to get more verbose logging. Until now I'd get to this point and it wouldn't change until I shut it down:

I'm guessing the reason for the suspension was the message immediately above the notice. Now I just see the "unmapped device" message and the guest window says "running" indefinitely. I've attached copies of logs from a couple of sessions, one where it suspends itself (a vnc session) and another where it just stays running (a console session). Some googling suggested that the "unmapped device" message implies it can't find the boot drive or the boot sector on the virtual disk.

The host is normally accessed through a VNC session to a virtual console but VBox log messages indicate that it cannot determine the keyboard type when accessed this way so I now have to physically sit at the native console. If anyone knows of a way to overcome this limitation I'm all ears.

People don't usually respond to my threads so I'm basically talking to myself outloud here. I'll read it again later an maybe come up with something else to try. For now I'm going to remove all the VBox packages and re-install them, starting from scratch. If that doesn't get it working I'll delete the converted virtual disk and re-convert it from the original. If I still can't get VBox working after that I'll be forced to install VMware Server (resource hog). I'm getting desperate now...

[Background] Until a few weeks ago we were happily using qemu-kvm but encountered a bug when using the "-smb" argument after updating the host from Fedora 9 to 12. (re: F12: qemu-kvm with -smb hangs then dies) In an attempt to get our virtualized MS Windows Server 2003 back up and running I installed VirtualBox-OSE-3.0.10-1.fc12.x86_64 and friends over the Christmas break. I converted the qemu qcow2 image to raw then to vdi format using qemu-img and VBoxManage tools. There were no errors during the install of VirtualBox. In the beginning Bug Buddy notified of a crash whenever we started up VBox but after some digging and experimenting I believe the crashes were caused by running VBox in a VNC session instead of at the console. I haven't seen a crash when starting it in a native console session. Unfortunately, this means I can do very little remotely.

I then read that the reason that i don't have any sub capability when i'm running XP as guest OS using VirtualBox is that I have a open source version of the program.

virtualbox is still not running. I use experimental branch flash is not working now. flashplugin was installed, I restarted my browsers, not working. I tested it with opera, chromium and iceweasel.

My questions are:
How I ever can go back to stable?
