I am running dual boot Ubuntu and windows 7 but have decided to ditch windows and go permanently with Ubuntu. How do I save my data files (email addresses etc.) to an external hard drive for downloading back on to my laptop when I have reformated it.
how to transfer large files from my laptop to external hard drive. Problem occurs when I'm sending Blu-ray films (4.4GB) to external, gets to 4GB and then comes up with error. Is there any way of breaking it up and then merging when it reaches the hard drive or is there a way of sending it as one whole file.
I've been working at this for the past 2 days now. My computer got some kind of virus or something that has caused it to loop at startup and continually reset. I run an XP OS on a Gateway. I desperately need to backup my files, because the person who had my backup absently deleted my stuff. I was able to boot up using an Ubuntu disc and I'm in it right now, I've found my files, I have an external hard drive. The problem:First, it wont let me paste into the hard drive. If I drag, it says "Error while copying to "/media/FreeAgent Drive". You do not have permissions to write to this folder." I've mounted the external drive, nothing changes.
I've gone in to properties, is says under permissions that the owner is root, folder access is "Access files" and at the bottom is says "You are not the owner, so you can't change these permissions." The drop downs where I need to change permissions is in gray, so I can;t change it.So next, I tried "gksu nautilus", went to the drive through there, and it let me use the drop down selection under permissions. I tried to change the folder access and I got this message: "The permissions could not be changed. Couldn't change the permissions of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk." So I tried changing the file access to Read and Write. It didn't give an error, so I thought perhaps it finally worked. I hit apply, and tried to put my files in. Once again I got the message from before that said I didn't have permission. I tried to change the owner so it was no longer root and I got "The owner could not be changed. Couldn't change the owner of "FreeAgent Drive" because it is on a read-only disk."I'm getting so frustrated right now. These files are VERY important to me! im trying to copy a file over to my external hard drive and its a 5.8gig file and i keep getting this error saying there was a file copy error and then i click show more details and says Failed to attach the file: File too large
I have an external harddrive of 500GB. It's almost fully loaded with TV series and movies. Nautilus says there's 60 GB remaining space. I just downloaded some movies, and copied it to this external hard drive.And here's the strange part, after I did this I only see a very small subset of all the movies I stored on that harddrive in nautilus. With 500 GB almost full, you can imagine there are quite some movies on it, but I only see 12 of them in nautilus.
I bought a new 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive and mounted it in an external enclosure for use as an external backup drive. I had a whale of a time getting it formatted (ref post), but finally did by putting the bare drive into a laptop and used Ubuntu to partition and format as part of installing. Then I remounted the bare drive back into the enclosure and sure enough now I can now see the drive.
So now I want to erase the files from the backup drive. Problem is, Ubuntu won't let me delete or add any files. In Nautlis, if I select the files and "right click", Move to Trash is grayed out. If I press the delete button, nothing happens. If I try to copy a new file to the backup drive it says "permission denied". If I go into the Properties .> Permissions for the drive everything is grayed out so I can't change the permission. It also says "You are not the owner so you cannot change permissions".
when I try to share files off of my external hard drive over my network; it says it is shared on my ubuntu machine but when I try to access the file on my windows machine it says I do not have permission.
I want to copy a .tgz file from my computer to an external hard drive. I have two USB 2 external hard drives. I want to copy about 30 gigs of data from one to another. What command line command do I use ? I was thinking of using cp with the -R and -n options, but I have no idea what devices to refer to. I can't find any external hard drives in /etc/fstab and I'm not sure what /dev device each USB external hard drive uses. I just want to copy the files and the directories that they are in just as they are. There are no links and I do not want to do a backup.
I have installed luckybackup software on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition. But I don't know how to use it to backup files to an external hard drive. The Hard Drive is a 1 TB Seagate. I don't think that the Destination Drop down menu in luckybackup even shows the External HD.
Recently my laptop broke down and wont start up. I'm currently trying to recover my files to my mac with an IDE to USB cable. It recognized my windows partition fine and I was able to get all my files off of that, but the majority of my stuff is on the ext4 partition that I have on it. Does anyone know how to access the ubuntu partition of this hard drive from my mac?
I just lost over 300gb of files due to my external hard drive crashing.There was an error with the files system.I tried formatting on Slackware but cfdisk didn't work for me.I'm looking for something much easier with a GUI or something similar to the Disk Utility that you get in Ubuntu.And also which format do I format my external harddrive to?Something even more stable than ext4 or ntfs? Cause I do not want my external hard drive to crash again.

I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing.Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch.At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder.For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens.The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.
I have a laptop with only 30GB storage and I want to install Lubuntu in virtual box but Lubuntu needs 5GB of storage space which i dont have. Could i use an external 160GB hard drive to act as the hard drive for the virtual machine without affecting the files that are already on the external hard drive
I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

I'm getting a really low speed (2-3 mbps) while transferring data to my USB drive and external hard drive. I've heard this problem's there in Karmic but not in Jaunty but i have Jaunty and yet I'm facing this problem.
I have ubuntu installed on one hard drive (laptop hard drive). The hard drive has some bad sectors on one of the partitons. I have installed a new hard drive and now wan to import the ubuntu installation on the new hard drive. What is the easiest way of doing this? I dont' want to start fresh because I have a lot of custom drivers and settings saved.

I have a 500 gig external usb, and a few 8 gig flash drives. If i copy a file (say a movie or large file) from my primary hard drive (80 gig WD formatted to ext3) to a usb drive it transfers very slowly, about 2 mb/s. But if I copy a file off my secondary internal drive (40 gig seagate formatted to ntfs) it transfers full speed (25-30 mb/s) Its also very slow transfering between internal hard drives (again, no more than 5 mb/s) I checked and as far as i can tell both drives are running in DMA mode. Any reason my primary seems to be causing this bottleneck? it seems to preform fine otherwise (as it is the drive with my ubuntu installation on it)
This is my first even moderately successful venture with linux, I had a virus ridden HD which I formatted, and then installed Mint distro. I then shut down, removed the HD and turned my desktop back on. I then receive the Error 15 notification while booting, and don't know how to solve this problem. I've tried sudo update-grub, but I get a notification that the terminal can't find it. Would it be safe to delete anything concerning the GRUB from my primary OS system files?
