Ubuntu :: Syncing IPhone With Banshee Transfers But Unseen On Device
May 2, 2011
I recently installed ubuntu and noticed somewhere that it says "Now you can say ubuntu has iDevice support out of the box". Naturally i tried, resulting in a music library with all the album artwork mixed up. I've tried to sync a couple of times, even added the repository for libimobiledevice and searched for the newest version (said it was already installed). When trying to sync with banshee (or rythmbox), it says syncing on my screen and on my iphone's screen. After syncing, my iphone updates the library, no new music is discovered. I can also add that banshee discovers 100 extra songs on my iphone.

I'm having a few problems with my Creative Zen and Banshee after swapping computers and upgrading to openSUSE 11.2. At first I was having problems because it wouldn't detect, but that seems to be about resolved now (although I do sometimes have to unmount it in Nautilus then disable and re-enable the MTP extension in Banshee at the moment). Now the problem appears to be that it'll transfer, but that the tracks won't play.
I'm using Banshee 1.5.2 with a custom build with this MTP on 64-bit patch added. I manually manage the device (I've got 10GB of music and an 8GB player, so I use a smart playlist that I manually sync with) and have been testing with just a few tracks at once - MP3 and M4A (iTunes+). Tracks generally copy over okay (although one MP3 in particular seems to freeze during transfer) but when I try to play them I get "There is a problem playing this audio".
I've tried Gnomad, but the tracks didn't show up at all, and I've tried Rhythmbox, but it doesn't sync album art, even for tracks I know it has the art for.Anyone had similar experiences or have any ideas? I've had all of these songs on there before, so it is annoying that it isn't working now.

I have the latest version of Ubuntu, but I still can't update the music on my ipod with rhythm box.So here is the deal. I put a handful of songs on my ipod using my windows computer at my parents house. Now, when I plug my iphone into my computer, the device shows up, and I am able to add and delete songs in rhythm box. The computer says it's working, and the ipod says its syncing, but once its done syncing, none of the old songs are deleted, and none of the new songs are added. Also, the old songs can't be played anymore. I've looked all around for a solution to this problem but no one can help.

I installed Kubuntu 10.04 fresh and can't get it to recognize my iPhone 3GS. This is a deal-breaker for me unless there's a workaround. Let me know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it.

My wife and I have:
iPhone 16GB 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 (not jailbroken)
iPhone 32GB 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 (not jailbroken)
We're running Ubuntu 10.10 and syncing our phones with Rhythmbox 0.13.1. It's painfully slow and skips songs sometimes. For 1500 songs, it's taking up to 5 hours. This is insane. I updated my apt sources and can mount our phones just fine. Syncing slowly is the only issue. I've read a ton of other reads about iPods having this issue as well, but not only were those issues never resolved by I haven't seen one with the actual iPhone.

I am trying to get working properly with Ubuntu. Currently I am trying to get it to work with Banshee.Originally, my girlfriend connected it to iTunes running under Windows, and configured it and loaded music, photos and podcasts onto it. Unfortunately for her, the Windows machine had a hardware failure, and there is no other PC running real Windows for her to use. I have some Windows Virtual Machines on my Ubuntu server, but there are known problems passing through the iPod USB connection to a KVM Virtual Machine.
I tried iTunes under Wine (using the PlayOnLinux software to install and configure), but that also doesn't work (also apparently a known problem). So I am left with getting the iPod working with real native Ubuntu software. I tried Rhythmbox, but that doesn't seem to support writing to an iPod. Then I tried Banshee, which claims to be able to do it all.Banshee can connect to the iPod, and I can load music and videos onto the iPod, but:Banshee cannot see any of the music already on the iPod (loaded with ITunes),The iPod cannot see any of the files (music or video, nor any new Playlists) loaded by Banshee. The files are there (I can see them by browsing the iPod device with Nautilus), and they are certainly taking up storage space, but they do not show up when using the iPod directly. It is as if there are 2 iPods: the real iPod, and a virtual iPod accessed by Banshee.
I am running Banshee 1.6 Beta 3 (1.5.2), on Jaunty (9.04).When I first connected the iPod to Banshee it told me that, because the device had been used with a new version of iTunes, the media catalogue would have to be rebuilt, to which I agreed. I am starting to suspect that there are now 2 media catalogues on the iPod, one being used by Banshee, and the other by the iPod iteslf.

I can't seem to get my iphone 3gs to sync with banshee. I had it working before upgrading to 11.04. It recognizes the phone but when I try to sync, I get "the mp3 format is not supported by the device and no converter was found to convert it" I've never run into this problem. I thought the iphone supported mp3 files since that's what worked before.

I used to be able to sync my music with HTC Hero and Banshee, but when I upgraded to 2.1 quite a while back banshee seems to crash. I now have a Nexus One (Android 2.2) and that does the same. (no longer have the Hero). They both seem to crash Banshee when it gets to syncing the playlists (every time), music syncs fine. Does anyone else on 2.1 or 2.2 have this problem or is it just me? (been doing searches every now and then since the Hero update but cant find anything).

A friend of mine has a 1st generation iPod touch, and wants to switch completely to linux, but is concerned how the songs currently on his iPod will be handled when he switches. He has many songs that are only on the iPod; he has purchased them from the iTunes store directly on the device, not through iTunes on his computer.
When he syncs his iPod with Banshee, will Banshee merely copy the songs onto his linux partition? Is there any chance that Banshee will remove the songs from his iPod? He obviously dosen't want to lose any of his music. A slightly lesser concern as well... will Banshee be able to play these protected files?

When my Iphone had the 4.2.1 firmware it mounted just fine with Ubuntu, OK sure it took a download of libimobiledevice1 and some other libraries but it worked, and sync'd just fine with Rhythmbox. But, as all manufacturers do, they have released a superior new OS for the phone which fixes all those annoying little bug. I have read from 4.3.2 they changed the itunes database version to an updated one. Now this is fine if you have a windows or mac machine running the latest version of itunes but if like all of us here you have an Ubuntu machine for a very valid reason... i.e you wanted a better operating system that wasnt going to cost the earth.
well, you are screwed as they have locked the third part access to the device's itunes library. I have followed long procedures trying to hack into the phone, modifying certain files, creating a hashfile and dropping this into a system folder to fool the phone into thinking it has the 4.2.1 database still but to no avail. Now my iphone is jailbroken, for the very same reasons as to why have an ubuntu machine, a good peice of hardware with good software that i can customise to run how i see fit, this error is the same with my friends non jaibroken phone and my wifes newly updated iopd..
Surely someone out there who has an ipod, iphone 3gs who are running 4.3.2 or higher has figured out how to fix this annoying "update" problem. The phone mounts fine and i can see a documents drive and the main iphone itself, so it is being recognised but im getting errors when trying ti access the phone in ANY linux media software... They all see the phone but cant recognise the database.

I've got a Creative Zen media player that I still need to use Windows to sync my music to, because no linux software that I know of supports the transfer of album artwork to my device. Is this going to be fixed in the near future? Has it already? Or am I always going to have to stick to Windows Media Player for this?

Using a Python scipt by balint of Spench.net I can set my iPhone as a gpsd device (using mobile Safari and the tether connection)
Quote:
ryank@kayleeslaptop:~$ sudo python iPhone-gpsd.py
Current directory: /home/ryank
gpsd: Can't bind to port 2947
gpsd: Maybe gpsd is already running!
gpsd: Can't bind to port 2947
[Code]....
It sets the device as /dev/pts/1 but GPSDrive (and any other program for that matter) shows that there is not GPS...

I just got a Motorola Atrix yesterday. Figured I could just use Banshee to manage the device in Ubuntu like I did with my prior IPhone. However, banshee doesn't seem to pick up the device. However, they dont' tell you what file to add it to. I did add those lines to /home/michael/.config/banshee-1/addin-db-001/config.xml which was the only xml file I could find for banshee. However, still doesn't work.
Does anyone have any experience getting the Atrix to work in banshee. Or does anyone know of another manager I would be able to use to manage music and video on Ubuntu. The only official way to do this is to use Windows Media Player or the motorola app both of which are Windows/Mac.

A little over a year ago I was using SCP to successfully transfer large files over my LAN (exact same hardware). I can't seem to do this any more, and I'm not sure why.I think it's either something with iptables, or a network card driver problem. I use the same driver for both computers (b43 wireless). I can't do FTP transfers either. They start going, but quickly stall. I've used the Firestarter (iptables gui) to allow all the correct connections. One last thing: When I tried to connect to ssh using an alfa wireless card (not sure of the drivers), I couldn't even connect to ssh period. Same settings were used.

When copying files to USB drives, the file progress bar moves it 'bursts', sometimes doing nothing for long periods, then moving forward quickly and stopping again. It's almost like it is showing the transfer to the cache, not the transfer to the actual drive.

Has anyone else noticed that file transfers on Maverick are significantly slower than on Lucid? A review of Maverick on Tom's Hardware finds that it is considerably slower. My own test says: On 10.10, file copy between two NTFS drives maxes at 30 MBytes/s; on 10.04.1, the same operations clock in at 40 MBytes/s. Both drives are capable of rw speeds of 70-90 MBytes/s, which I got on WinXP, and hdparm's cached read results back that up.
why file transfers are so slow, and especially why Maverick is even slower than Lucid?

I recently built a home media server and decided on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything is running well except when I try to transfer my media collection from other PCs where it's backed up to the new machine. Here's my build and various situations:
Intel D945GSEJT w/ Atom N270 CPU
2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM (this board uses laptop chipset)
External 60W AC adapter in lieu of internal PSU
133x CompactFlash -> IDE adapter for OS installation
2(x) Samsung EcoGreen 5400rpm 1.5TB HDDs formatted for Ext4
Situation 1: Transferring 200+GB of files from an old P4-based system over gigabit LAN. Files transferred at 20MBps (megabytes, so there's no confusion). Took all night but the files got there with no problem. I thought the speed was a little slow, but didn't know what to expect from this new, low-power machine.
Situation 2: Transferring ~500GB of videos from a modern gaming rig (i7, 6GB of RAM, running Windows7, etc etc). These files transfer at 70MBps. I was quite impressed with the speed, but after about 30-45 minutes I came back to find that Ubuntu had hung completely.
I try again. Same thing. Ubuntu hangs after a few minutes of transferring at this speed. It seems completely random. I've taken to transferring a few folders at a time (10GB or so) and so far it has hung once and been fine the other three times. Now, I have my network MTU set from automatic to 9000. Could this cause Ubuntu to hang like this? When I say hang I mean it freezes completely requiring a reboot. The cursor stops blinking in a text field, the mouse is no longer responsive, etc.
