Ubuntu :: Setting Up Freenx As Server And Client On Windows?
Jan 14, 2010
I have been messing around with freenx to see if I can support my customer via remote desktop... I have installed the server on Ubuntu Karmic and the client on Windows 7. I love linux but need the windows computer for customer work and that is why I chose to install the client on windows. I setup the server the best I could and created custom keys which I then copied to windows and imported them to the freenx client. I am looking for security for my customer and that is why I chose custom keys... There are several issues to deal with but I want to just get started to see where it takes me. I added the test server computers ip address to the freenx client configuration and tried to connect to Ubuntu... I have left the port as 22 at the moment
Desktop setting on the client...I chose vnc which seems to be a good choice according to all the material I have been reading....Other settings I have left alone at the moment to see how things work.... All that said - I have the login window asking for information... I have the password asking for information....and I have the session wanting information....? Obviously I understand that login info can be set on the server and the password...but I haven't seen how to set up that? Of course I am testing the server from a client on my home network at the moment - but the customer has his own router as do I so those settings will need to be looked at as well.
I am trying (desperately) to setup freeNX so that I can access my Mandriva box from my Macbook over my network. I have great need to be able to do this. Here's the necessary info for you: Mandriva PC: running Mandriva 2010.0 with freeNX installed from the Mandriva repos Macbook: running OS 10.4 with the Nomachine NX Client installed Now, I have followed the setup from the Mandriva wiki as well as the freenx wiki to no avail. I simply cannot connect the Macbook's NX client to the server. I get an authentication failed message. However, I can ssh from the Macbook to the server just fine (that's how I'm getting most of this work done).
Does anyone know how to do a 'shadow' session with freenx client, qtNX?I don't see any options in that particular client to 'attach' or 'shadow' a current X11 session. Does anyone have a slackbuild for nomachines NX client?
I currently have 4 Linux Servers installed in a test lab that I have built for my job. I am in the process of trying to get FTP to work (vsftpd is installed). I don't need an FTP GUI or anything, I can use terminal (and I don't have an internet connection, so I probably can't get one anyway). I bring up the terminal and I type FTP and I am presented with a few problems:
1. If I try to FTP to one of the other Linux Servers on the network, I get "No route to host" error.
2. If I try to FTP to the Server I am sitting on, then I am able to successfully connect, obviously. But when I do an "ls," I don't see any available files.
I am assuming this is because I have not yet set up a folder for it (i.e. Windows uses "ftproot" folder). I am running Ubuntu Gnome 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope for a GUI, and I am running Ubuntu Server underneath (Yes I need a GUI for what I am using the server for).
I want to practice setting up of NFS server and NFS client on Redhat using virtual machine on my laptop. I dont think setting up NFS should not be a problem but how do I replicate a NFS client. I just have one laptop. Is it possible to replicate both server and client using the same laptop? If so, can anyone tell what tools i can use to perform the above for practicing.
I got a system with RHEL 5.3 Server with dovecot, sendmail, and thunderbird. I have found tons of stuff online about configuring a mail server, but little of it tells me how to get mail from a client to the server. I've tried to work with Postfix, Pine, Sendmail, Thunderbird, and the list goes on. I'm probably so confused now that I'm not even going to convey this properly, but let me try...... I got a system called wks90 which I decided would be my mail server. I installed dovecot, sendmail, and thunderbird. Then did some basic configuration via stuff I found online. Now the test, from the command line I use the simple "mail" command which succeeds. I bring up thunderbird and eureka!!! there is a message in /var/spool/mail/george.
Now here is where I get confused and things fall apart. I go to another system named wks50. I try some similar setup in sendmail trying to point it to wks90 as the server, I assumed dovecot was not needed, made and entry in /etc/aliases, and will use my thunderbird on wks90. So at the wks50 command line I mail -v to firstname.lastname@example.org. The message seems to work ok, but still goes to wks50's /var/spool/mail. How in the name of sanity do I get the mail to go to /var/spool/mail on wks90? OR somewhere that is centrally located. I tried to mount /var/spool/mail to wks50, but then wks50's mail to root started queueing up and going nowhere.
I guess I got the whole concept of mail wrong somewhere in my thinking. I just want the mail from any client to wind up at one server (wks90) and in a central location on wks90 so that any client like wks50, wks60, and wks70, using thunderbird, can read the mail from that central location. To me this sounds like I need to mount that central location to each client, but how do I then deal with the queuing root mail? Or is sounds like a need something like that old "movemail" command to take it and move it. I have another server that is the HOME server (server1). The physical location of all $HOMEs is here i.e. /home/george.
I have a fast computer in my office and I want the person using the slow computer in the same office to boot up and see the login window (gdm) and log-in from there into the fast computer and be able to use their session on the fast computer the same time I am locally logged in to the fast computer as a different user and session. Is this best done through XDMCP? Where is a good tutorial on how to set this up?
I have downloaded and setup the SUSE Lifecycle Management Server on vmware using the Live CD Distribution. I have connected it to Susestudio.com as my repository and setup a user account via the backend on pg 96 using the slms-admin-ui-user -o to create my administrator account since I lost the password for the initial login. I created a customer and have the following:
Also I have a test box for installing the Live CD of our application. Do all appliance created on suse studio have the client to connect to the SLMS server or do need to install a client? If there is no client how do I obtain and add it to the appliance on susestudio.com ? How do I setup appliance as a client?
I have been spending hours and hours trying to find a "Remote installation for Dummies" ....kind of step-by-step approach. But after several evenings googling and reading. This is how far I got: I have installed FeeNX on my server and after sudo nxserver -- status I get a reply like this:
NX> 100 NXSERVER - Version 2.1.0-72 OS (GPL. using backend: 3.4.0) NX> 110 NX Server is running NX> 999 Bye
so to me that looks like the server process is running. I also installed the windows Nomachine on my laptop and hooked it all up in my local network (so no routers whatsoever) I disabled the firewalls on both my laptop and my server. just in case configured the client for port 22 and the fixed IP address of my server. even imported the users.id_dsa.pub key in the client. long story short: I only get that annoying little error window from Nomachine saying: "Cannot initialize the display service"
My desktop is running 'buntu 9.10 and I have recently aquired a couple of half decent servers running Windows server 2003. I have a few windows app's that I use regularly for work that I have had limited success in running with wine or in vm's. I stumbled upon a how to to call apps in a vm to run seamlessly on the host desktop and did some playing and have succeeded in calling app's on my servers from my 'buntu desktop, the command I have set in my launcher for one of them (DIALux)
My question is, can I change the default application/file association in 'buntu with a custom command so I can double click on a file and have it open in one of these remote app's??If I can, what is the correct custom command to be using as using the above doesn't work at all, it just tries to open the file with rdesktop not the remote app.
I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine. When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I cannot access the server file (prompted again and again to enter user name and password). What did i miss
I have a wireless router situated in another room. I am able to access this router (and consequently the internet) through a Windows laptop that has a wireless card in it. However, my other laptop that has Ubuntu 10.10 installed on it, doesn't seem to have a wireless card in it, and I have confirmed this by running the commands
Code: lspci and Code: iwlist scan
I briefly was able to share a folder in my Windows machine, and access it through my Ubuntu machine, after connecting both laptops with a cross-over cable. However, I can't even ping the Windows machine from my Ubuntu machine anymore, after trying to configure the IP addresses. I think I screwed it up.
Also, although this is not an Ubuntu issue, I have a weird Windows problem, where I can't access the Internet when both wireless and wired ethernet controllers are active at the same time. It would be a bonus if you could solve this problem too for me. I was surfing online for a solution to this problem for quite some time, but I was unable to comprehensively understand and implement what I browsed through. Also, some of the guides, like for example, that on configuring Samba, seem to be outdated, as the terminal tells me something like the package (that was required to be installed by the guides through sudo apt-get install) has been superceded. Hence I post here for clear, concise and easy-to-understand help from you gurus. It would be great if I could achieve the end result of being able to access the internet on my Ubuntu machine (through the Windows one).
i have an ubuntu server 4 windows client..i use putty or webmin. would like to copy some folders for example: "My houses"to be backup everynigth to the ubuntu server..can somebody give me an easy way for doing this with rsync and smb or cifs.
I'm trying to setup a linux box to act as just a DNS server. Its something I'd like to use just for WAN type requests and leave other domain related things to the Server running WIndows. At this point on my Linux box, I can run queries and nslookups from it. I can not however, from a Windows box, run a NSLOOKUP command from the Linux box which is telling me to check the permissions from Linux to enable that for the clients. It's enabled. From a C: I type in nslookup - *ip of Linux box* and it tells me -- Can't find server name for address.
I have a very nice SUSE 11.2 Samba PDC that runs well with Windows XP clients. I am using NETBIOS for name resolution since I dont want to put in a DNS server because my router already has one, Im pretty sure it would make things more complicated. I enabled wins support in smb.conf and made the name resolve order with lmhosts first. lmhosts lists all the ip adresses with their computer names in capitals. I hope thats right. I set up my windows 7 with the reg file from the samba wiki on windows 7 [URL].
That's great now I get the old screen from XP in windows 7 when joining the domain. I gave the machine netbios name MAINPC a smb trust account MAINPC and added the unix user MAINPC$ that should all work. I manage to successfully join it says welcome to domain, afterwards an error appears "changing the dns name of this computer to "" failed" and something bout not finding the domain controller. although I joined. then I resatart and when I try to log on it says "trust relationship failed". How to make it join and logon properly.
I have set up my Openvpn Server in Centos and it is working fine. Windows XP clients are able to connect the OpenVPN Server and access the network. This is a customized OpenVPN Gui Client. Now I need the customized OpenVPN Client for MS Windows 7Bit. I am using openvpn-2.1.4-install OpenVPN Client in MS Windows 7 64Bit. This is a executable and working fine in the said architecture. Now I want to compile this version. I am following the given steps at : [URL].. As per the direction i have copied the source from 2.1.4 and tried to compile, but compiled copy is giving the error " An error occurred Installing the TAP-Win32 Device Driver". I have tried this compilation by making every change and hack but all in vain.
I think that there are some certain steps which are missing and not documented any where. And sure that someone in forum will know the facts.
I am facing the problem in squid server. I configured the squid transparent and its working fine and browsing but when the clients are configuring the ms outlook than squid is not allowing the smtp(587) and pop3(995) request. email send and recieve are failed.
I have configured samba in linux .i can share file from windows client. we are not using any domain or ldap. using workgroup only. kindly let me know is it possible to change the smbpassword from client.
I got this laptop that's 3 years old. Previously, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) using a bootable CD. Occasionally, Ubuntu would freeze and I did not know of a way to safe-shutdown. Everytime it froze, I simply did a hard-shutdown. And there we go. This hard-shutdown damaged the OS. Anyway, I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) and burned a CD. Magic! Laptop won't read the CD. Boot is far ahead, it's just not reading it at all! Looked around, found that setting up a PXE server is my last hope. The guides? They weren't nice to read. What I'm looking for is to set up a PXE server on the PC (running Windows 7 / Ubuntu 10.04 dual-boot) and boot from the PC through the PXE server. I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop AMD64
I have one Windows-XP on Machin 1 and one Linux on Machine 2. I want make Linux machine as CVS server and Windows Xp as CVS client. How to setup CVS Server in Fedora-11 machine and CVS client in Windows Xp?
i have a centos 5.5 server running tomcat, oracle xe,apache etc..i would like to be able my windows machine to access this server by name, and not ip, for example have http://backserv:7080 for oracle xe web admin and so on..i know one way is DNS, but if i install oracle on a windows machine in peer-to-peer network, i can allready access with by it's name. o i'm guessing i should do something with samba, wins or something like that.never mind i got now for the REAL complex stuff of insalling web sphere 7 without user interface (need to look for a response file).
I am somewhat of a newbie at *nix. I've asked some questions about Debian in the past, but I decided to just go ahead and start simple, with Ubuntu, then moving up once I've got the hang of things. So, I want to use Ubuntu 9.10 as a fileserver for my network, which consists of 3 Windows PCs and 1 Mac. I have a few ideas on where to go, Samba being my first package install, but I'm not too sure where to go from there. Could someone help me out? I love to RTFM, so if you'd point me kindly in those directions, I'll be glad to jump right on that too.
I need to grant windows client an access to fileserver. The easiest way to do it is how? Setting up VPN server on Windows server, what rules are going into iptables in linux machine then. Or setting up VPN server on Linux machine (which is the best option) and how the user gets to fileserver?
