I have ubuntu server as a guest in virtualbox and xubuntu as my host os. I have a shared folder on my host that can be accessed by my network. I'm trying to use my server without the need to install a desktop, so how would i transfer a file from my host machine to my ubuntu server guest?
View 5 RepliesI configured Samba so that this laptop running Maverick would show up on the network so I could share files between the two. When I view the network on the laptop the windows shares show up, and I can access them; but when I view the network on Windows is when the problems start.
I view the network in Windows and this laptop shows up, but every time I try to open the Public folder (only folder shared) it won't let me in. I get some sort of Windows error message about being unable to access the folder and how I might not have permission to access it, and then at the very bottom it says something like 'file path not found'.
I tried to change the permissions in the properties for my public folder but I every time I tried to change the settings in the access box it would reset it back to blank (-) immediately after I changed it.
I'm not sure what the issue could be. Prior to purchasing this new laptop I was running Karmic on my old laptop and the networking between the two machines worked flawlessly. I'm hoping someone on the forum can help me with this problem.
I am trying to access shared folders in Virtual Box with Host OS being Windows7 and Guest OS is Fedora. Did anyone face a similar problem? I have been going through many solutions but none of them worked out. I am able to keep the required folders in Shared Folders making them Auto-Mount and Permanent. I tried to install Guest Additions from Devices, but I am not sure how to install the Guest-Additions software in Fedora. how to proceed so that I can access files in my shared folder.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to share folders between my laptop and desktop. The desktop runs Ubuntu 10 ,and the laptop I'm dual-booting between pclinux OS and another OS. I can't see either machine from either machine. The desktop shows a "windows network" when I go to the network location in file manager. When I run PC Linux, I can't even see the desktop which runs Linux as well, and I've tried to configure shares in the PC Linux OS Control Center, but I obviously failed. I installed gshare on the Ubuntu machine, and PC Linux has GUI tools(whew!) to configure NFS, SMB, and Deb-whatever the other one's name is. As a new convert, I've went into properties,permissions, because it's what I'm familiar with. I just wish someone would tell me if I should maybe just go back to the other OS or not, as I've had so many problems every since trying the switch. I really like this system, but it seems as if you need to be some kind of computer programmer or something to be able to do the most basic things (install software,wireless,share files). I'm not a stupid person, and what I lack in knowledge, I compensate for in desire to learn.

I am moving some websites from a shared host to a newly configured Xen based VPS with Ubuntu 10.04. A steep learning curve but I am getting there! I have a couple of sites installed on the new server and want to test them out, from what I understand I should be able to edit /etc/hosts on my desktop computer (running Ubuntu 10.04) which should automatically redirect my browser to the new server. But it doesn't seem to work.
This is what I appended to the /etc/hosts file:
12.34.56.78 www.xxxx.com
I thought that this should send any requests for www.xxxx.com to 12.34.56.78? Some googling indicated that the browsers I am using may be using DNS caching, ignoring the hosts file. I've tried clearing the cache with Chromium 7.0.517.44 (64615) and Firefox 3.6.12, and even installed a plugin in Firefox to block DNS caching.
I just did a new install of 11.04 because I got a new ssd and now when I try to host my site from /home/USER/www/ apache says "You don't have permission to access / on this server" 403 Forbidden. I had the same exact configuration files on my other install of 11.04 and everything worked fine. One thing I did notice is that when apache installed it did not create a www-data group. I also serve a folder for music on another port and I can get to that fine.

If I install Ubuntu Desktop to my local machine is it possible for me to administer the server using Ubuntu Desktop (using the GUI)? I connect to the net over ADSL. Any guides/advice for setting up Ubuntu as a web/mail/ftp with a key focus on keeping to secure? I know how to install LAMP but as I have root I need to learn a little more than I did when I was on a shared host.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my bare metal server, I get about 130MB/s read from a software RAID 10 array, but when reading the same file from a VM via NFS over the VirtIO interface,I only get about 40MB/s.
Furthermore, the process for the VM uses >180% CPU on the host, and ~40%, and the 5 min average is ~1.5 on the host and guest. I have dual E5620's so I'm disappointed that the transfer is so slow, as I was expecting at least 90MB/s.
I'm new to being a sysadmin, so if anyone has some tips I can use to increase the transfer rate, and possibility reduce the CPU load as well I'd appreciate it. I'm assuming that 130MB/s is the max speed of two 7.2k HDDs, but if there's any way I can squeeze any more out that would be great too.
System specs:
2x Intel Xeon E5620s @ 2.40Ghz
8GB of RAM @ 1066Mhz
4x 1TB Western Digital Black HDDs in RAID10

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am working on a cluster for a molecular dynamics class and I have to edit my FORTRAN code (only the newest and best for me!). In order to get through to the cluster I have to ssh in. The network on which the cluster resides is behind a firewall, so I have to ssh through the firewall into the network first.
this is fine, I can login and move files and folders as needed, including sftp-ing into host 1, then into the cluster so I can transfer files from cluster to host and then host to me. This gets rather tiresome, so it would be nice to edit the files in place.
The problem is that when I access my code with emacs it launches the emacs client on Host 1, with no mouse support. I know the purists will howl about how I should be using keyboard shortcuts, but I am a chemist and not a programmer, so the mouse is very nice for me. Is there any way I can perhaps mount the cluster using sshfs so that when I open my code it launches a local instance of emacs? Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I thought it was network related.

I am interested to set up multiple parallel websites for my apache server, however I am not sure how to do this exactly. Now I have solid address rivera.wippies.net and port 80 redirecting to my server. What I would like to get done is that I get multiple independent of each other websites for my server I was thinking of making websites like this
/var/www/site1 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net)
/var/www/site2 (which would be as rivera.wippies.net/othersite)
/var/www/site3 (which would be rivera.wippies.net/secondothersite)
etc, so that I have multiple "individual" websties for my server. Requirements would be that each of these websites could have SSL encryption as needed available too, since some of the website could have confidential information.
I am setting up a lubuntu nas with all of my music, movies, etc on it. I want to give my kids access to my mp3 directory, so I can move all of the kid appropiate music into the root of my mp3 dir, in the same order I have all of my music sorted. Under the Music folder, I have them sorted, in folders, by letter. So A, B, C, D, etc... Now, in those folders are the respective artists. So where there may be something approipate in the P folder (say, Paramore), there is something inapproipate (say, Pantera)Now, when the kids go to the P folder, I don't want them to even see the Pantera folder. I just want them to see the Paramore folder. I tried a test using chmod 711 and chmod 700 on a directory with a test user, and the user can't access the directory, but can still see it
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two servers, one has an empty / and the other has a subdirectory with a large number (4 gig) with many, many files. I need a way to transfer the files en masse from the server with the large number of files to the one that is essentially blank.I don't have space on the used host to simply gzip all the files. I've googled this and see that there may be some combination of tar and/or gzip that will let me do this with some sort of redirection.
I really need and example line of how this can be accomplished. If my explanation seems rather sparse, I can supply more details.
I have my server set up with AjaXplorer but there is a bug in the flash uploader that doesn't let you upload anything to the server.The only way I can update any files or add new ones is to physically plug in an external hard drive or USB drive and transfer them.I have openssh access and that's all set up, but can I transfer files somehow from my laptop to my server using like a cp command?

It is on an HP 2.3ghz Pent 4 with 512 mb of RAM.I had previously installed Ubuntu and Kubuntu in a dual boot with XP (actually had a triple boot with XP, Ubuntu, and a BETA Windows 7) for a while, Grub got messed up so I ended up wiping it and just put my XP back on it. I have been intimidated by the command line and when thinking server, I tried the 30 day deal with windows Home server, its OK but it's $100.00 for the permenant version.
Anyway, I manned up to the challenge, installed Ubuntu server, set up as SSH and Samba. I administer from PuTTy and WEBMIN, I tried TightVNC but the GUI seemed very useless, so on a reinstall I went headless.The problem is I have alot of MP3 files I want to transfer back to the server that I had previously transfer to and back again from the Windows server, it was sceamin' fast compared to this. I have found threads talking about using NTFS, I have the EX3, or whatever the Ubuntu format is. Could that cause slow transfers, from NTSF through Samba to Ubuntu?
I'm trying to create an Ubuntu Server file server that will handle large file transfers (up to 50gb) from the LAN with Windows clients. We've been using a Windows server on our LAN on the file transfers will occasionally fail... though the server is used for other services as well.
The files will be up to 50gb. My thoughts are to create a VLAN (or separate physical switch) to ensure maximum bandwidth. Ubuntu server will be 64bit with 4tb of storage in a RAID 5 config.

What the file permissions should for the following folders:
/etc/
/home/
/lost+found/
/mnt/
/root/
/sbin/
/srv/
/tmp/
The server is running and I fixed the some of the ownership issues already. I use a basic LAMP setup with samba, and proftp.
